A hidden offering

There is intelligence in the tender
but we must slow down, breathe, and provide safe passage.
To infuse the rawness with curiosity, space, and compassion,

As humans we have become separated with our source.

Then what does nature use?

If you truly want to take up the path of good you must be aware that you will not be able to escape attack from evil. Because evil is what it is, it will continue to see you as its enemy and you will not convince it to change its nature – whatever you do, it will fight you. Evil only spares those who have sided with it: it protects them and rocks them to sleep so that they remain under its influence as long as possible. But if, on the other hand, you refuse to put yourself at its service, then you arouse its hatred. You may say this is awful. But it is in fact thanks to this hatred that you will go far.
For all the great initiates, evil was implacable,
and those who knew how to interpret events could see in it a clear sign.

Because only those who have been hated by evil to the very last are worthy of receiving the supreme Initiation. Those who did not understand, pity them,

Letting go has more to do with patience than it does with release.
There is a difference in direction, in valence,

There is a famous phrase in Japanese Buddhism that tries to explain this.

it suggests.
Then "body and mind of themselves will drop away,

this backward step is another of way of describing Right Action.
You settle into yourself rather than trying to make the troubling thing go away.
If anything drops away, it does so by itself.

At some point, how you thought it was all going to turn out
will crumble away into dust.
The gates to deflation will open and all that remains is you raw, burning heart.

It is the nature of form to take birth, to dance, to play,
and then to fall back into the unknown.
This is not some sort of cosmic error, but the way of things – creative, intelligent, and a reflection of universal flow.

Relationships, work, family, friends, our health … ideas about ourselves, others, and the world.
What we thought would provide ongoing meaning and purpose.
Reorganizing before us, longing to be re-authored in more integrated, cohesive, and compassionate ways.

Even what we were so sure about just a few days ago
– the great realizations, discoveries, and insights about who we are, what is most true, what will provide lasting peace … no longer quite as convincing.
The shakiness has returned.

All form must end, departing through a portal into the darkness,
so that new forms may emerge from the crucible of clear space.

See that the death of form is filled with erupting particles of life,

Stop listening to trivia.
Stop taking offense.
Stop over-thinking.

Silence is an inside job.
The stillest morning in the forest
is filled with rustles, chirps, and whispers.
The refrigerator drones in the quiet.
The fabric in my pants swishes against itself
as I walk up the hallway.
Life is not a quiet experience,
but the mind can be the still point
about which it all turns.
This still point cannot be found
through words, thoughts, or information.
It waits for all of these to fade away.

I had a tooth pulled yesterday
and spent the afternoon in considerable discomfort.
The dentist supplied me with a few codeine-laced pills that I decided to use.
They indeed helped ease the pain,
but the pain relief is not what makes them dangerously addictive.
My racing thoughts settled down and my mind became sweetly quiet,
like a still pond on a breezeless day.

We accuse addicts of looking for a “high,”
but it is the stillness that would hook me.
The engine of my culture depends on the fuel of noisy minds.
That is the reason trivia, fear, and conflict fill every media source from entertainment to sports to politics.
I can’t depend on little white pills
so Lao-Tzu’s advice in chapter 56
becomes a foundation stone for my practice.

make money, mow his lawn, etc, etc, etc.”

The Holy Man
Long, long ago, there lived a Holy Man so good
that the astonished angels came from heaven
to see how one could be so godly.

He simply went about his daily life radiating love
as the star diffuses light and the flowers perfume
without even being aware of it.

Two words summed up his day.
He gave, and he forgave.
Yet these words never fell from his lips;
they were expressed in his ready smile,
and in his kindness, love and goodwill.

The angels said to God,

gave clear water to dried-up brooks,

The Holy Man simply went about his daily life

as the star diffuses light and the flower perfumes
without ever being aware of it.

And the people,
respecting his humility,
followed him silently,
never speaking about his miracles.

It was a Gesture of Love,
Not a skill "learned",
This coming to the Inner Presence.
I could not grasp, or The Beloved would flee,
I could not seek to hold and sustain,
Or The Friend would vanish.
The Inner Presence itself taught me this.

It was a gentle turning of Attention,
A movement of Affection,
Within, where I could not locate myself...
And yet... Aliveness Shone.

It was not enough to come to this place,
Where, unable to find myself,
"I" become Vast and Limitless.
For this "I", as well,
However subtle the feeling,
Had to Vanish.

The personality that you carry is a dead thing.
You cannot walk very far when you carry a dead body over your shoulders.
And you can only head towards the burial ground.
If you carry a dead body for too long, you will have to bear with terrible smells.
The stronger your personality is, the more odoriferous it is.

You can go far in life only when you can leave your past.
This is like a snake shedding its skin.
One moment it is a part of the body, the next moment it is shed
and the snake goes on without turning back.
If every moment, one is like a snake leaving the skin behind,
only then there is growth.

When a person does not carry the burden of the past, he is a truly sinless person. Being sinless does not mean that he did not do anything with his life.
That would mean being a dead person.
He did everything a person could possibly do to know life,
but his actions never left any residue,
nor did he build a personality out of the actions he performed.

If you carry the past with you, then you also smell like anybody else.
The whole world stinks with personalities.
Everybody has his own strong smell or personality.
These are the various stenches in the world, and they keep clashing all the time.
All your anger, hatred, jealousy, fear – everything is based in the past.
The moment you carry the past and future, you become a real ass,
because the burden is such.
There is no way anybody can live his life intelligently carrying that burden.

Only that person
who does not carry the previous moment to this moment,
is free from everything.

If you transcend the intellect, you become equanimous.

you are simply here, seeing life in its true working.

The moment you drop or transcend the intellect, discrimination cannot exist. Everything becomes one whole, which is the reality.

A state like this gives you an experience of the oneness of the existence,
the unification of everything that is.

In this state there is no time or space.
Time and space is a creation of your mind.
Once you transcend the mind as a limitation, time and space doesn’t exist for you. What is here is there, what is now is then.
There is no past or future for you.
Everything is here, in this moment.

The whole aspect of spirituality is to go
beyond that discrimination and the survival instinct,
which are meant only for the physicality of life.
Samadhi is a state of equanimity where the intellect goes beyond its normal function of discrimination.
This in turn, loosens one from his physical body.
A space between what is you and your body is created.

Those who go into nirvikalpa samadhi states are always kept in protected states because their contact with the body becomes very minimal.
The smallest disturbance, like a sound or a pinprick,
would dislodge them from their body.
These states are maintained for certain periods
to establish the distinction between you and the body.
It is a significant step in one’s spiritual evolution, but still not the Ultimate.
The samadhis by themselves have no great significance in terms of realization.

Mahasamadhi is a dimension where you transcend discrimination –
not just experientially but also existentially.

Mahasamadhi means you not only see it that way,
you have become that way totally – discrimination is finished.
That means individual existence is finished.
Who you are does not exist anymore.

The life that is functioning as an individual life right now becomes absolutely universal or cosmic or boundless.
To put it in traditional terms,
you become one with God or one with everything.

What if you knew little of the walled villages,
Of religion, of belief, of faith, and philosophy,
And then experienced, one day,
What seemed, when considered after the fact,
A loss of consciousness,
The vanishing of Everything from Awareness,
Including yourself as the one aware, and yet…

Awareness continued?

And what if the nature of that Awareness,
Pure and unsullied by space, time, and objects,

To express its Ecstasy, its Rapture, its Perfection,

Felt as a Radiance in the Locus of your Heart,

A Wellspring of Grace.

And what if you then entered the spiritual marketplace,
In search of someone, anyone, to explain the Mystery,
Wandering the rows of stalls, past the shouting sellers,
Each declaring the “Truth”, and decrying the others,
Until your eyes and ears could bear it no longer,
And your Heart, bruised, pleaded with you to leave,
The pedantry, the arguments, the profaning of Love…

And return to the Simple Experience?

The simple Experience, not yet profaned by the mind,
Beyond knowledge and understanding,
Not poured into the mold of another's interpretation,
Not bound by prescription, proscription, and dogma,
Not requiring you to do this, and refrain from that,
Without cause, without condition, ever present,
A touch of Heaven ever Shining…

Grace, Unimaginable.

And what if, in time, that Presence in your Heart,
Like a Wellspring of Transmutation, within,
Diminished the terrible pain of your self,
Leaving intact all that you had taken yourself to be,
But stealing from your experience, the felt sense of “you”,
That very felt sense that had vanished that fateful day,
So long ago, in time, when time and all things Vanished…

And only The Mystery remained.

And what if, now free of the need for knowledge,
You returned to the spiritual marketplace,
Moved now only by Curiosity, Wonder, and Love,
And found yourself Dancing past the stalls,
Stealing this jewel from here, that jewel from there,
Until, your satchel full to overflowing,
You Bless them all, and return again…

To the Simple Experience?

And what if you then were moved by Delight,
To declare in poetic verse,
“Ah… this Most Beautiful Presence,
This Shining Radiance within,
This Exquisite Rapture,
This Fulfillment of all desire,
The Divine Thief that has stolen ‘me’…

I will call it God,
I will call it Brahman,
I will call it The Beloved,
I will call it The Holy Spirit,
I will call it Emptiness,
I will call it The Inner Light,
I will call it The Unnameable…

I will call it Love.”

And what if you were told,
To your surprise and amazement,
By some among the Friends you made,
That the ember in their Hearts,
Ignited, to their Delight and Inspiration,
In moments of Relationship with you,
Shining ever more Brightly, over time?

Until they found themselves, in time,
Imbued always with the touch of that Heaven,
Felt as a Radiance in the Locus of their Heart,
Sometimes the ambient background of experience,
Sometimes flooding the foreground, acutely,
Ever available to their mind's Attention,
Ever available to their Heart's Remembrance…
I will call that…

The Transmission of The Flame.

And what if you found, in the course of your life,
No finality in the milestones come to along The Way,
No flag to be planted, no summit to declare,
And that however Profound and Transmuting,

When my daughter was growing up,
I made it a rule that no one should teach her anything.

One of the biggest problems in the world is this:
the moment you are born,
everyone wants to teach you something that has not worked in their lives.

She did not need any of these tricks.
I just made sure she had enough exposure to nature and life around.

She grew up very joyfully.
But once, when she was about thirteen, she went through some emotional turmoil.
In this situation, I told her one thing:

“Never look up to anyone – never look down on anyone.
Never look up to anything – never look down on anything.
Look at everything the way it is.”
