For all that has been written,
for all that has been read, we
are led to this instant where one
of us will speak and one of us will
listen, as if no one has ever placed
an oar into that water.

It doesn’t matter how we come
to this. We may jump to it or be
worn to it. Because of great pain.
Or a sudden raw feeling that this
is all very real. It may happen in a
parking lot when we break the eggs
in the rain. Or watching each other
in our grief.

But here we will come. With very
little left in the way.
When we meet like this, I may not
have the words, so let me say it now:
Nothing compares to the sensation
of being alive
in the company of another.
It is God breathing on the embers of our soul.

Stripped of causes and plans
and things to strive for,
I have discovered everything
I could need or ask for
is right here--
in flawed abundance.

We cannot eliminate hunger,
but we can feed each other.
We cannot eliminate loneliness,
but we can hold each other.
We cannot eliminate pain,
but we can live a life
of compassion.
Ultimately,
we are small living things
awakened in the stream,
not gods who carve out rivers.

Like human fish,
we are asked to experience
meaning in the life that moves
through the gill of our heart.
There is nothing to do
and nowhere to go.
Accepting this,
we can do everything
and go anywhere.

THE QUEER OLD MAN WHO LIVED IN A CAVE

“There was once a queer old man who lived in a cave,
where he had sought refuge from the noise of the villages.
He was reputed to be a sorcerer, and therefore he had disciples
who hoped to learn the art of sorcery from him.
But he himself was not thinking of any such thing.

He was only seeking to know what it was that he did not know,
but which, he felt certain, was always happening.

After meditating for a very long time on that which is beyond meditation,
he saw no other way of escape from his predicament than to take a piece of red chalk
and draw all kinds of diagrams on the walls of his cave,
in order to find out what that which he did not know might look like.

After many attempts he hit on the circle.
“That’s right,” he felt, “and now for a quadrangle inside it!”
-which made it better still.

His disciples were curious;
but all they could make out was that the old man was up to something,
and they would have given anything to know what he was doing.

But when they asked him: “What are you doing there?” he made no reply.

Then they discovered the diagrams on the wall and said:
“That’s it!”-and they all imitated the diagrams.

But in so doing they turned the whole process upside down, without noticing it:
they anticipated the result in the hope of making the process repeat itself
which had led to that result.
This is how it happened then and how it still happens today.”

The science of yoga gives this possibility that you can remain calm and still be in an extreme sense of pleasure all the time.
Yogis are not against pleasure.

“I,” as a conscious ego, wasn’t making up the song.
It felt as though I was simply a channel for some energy or spirit to sing itself through me, as if I was discovering a new and powerful voice within myself.
It made me think of what I wrote in my recent book Awakened by Darkness,
“When we have our own words to sing, our voice appears.”

The song was simultaneously creating itself through me
while it was as if in singing the song
I was connecting with and re-membering something I had known long ago.

To quote Jung,
“This is the secret of dreams—that we do not dream,
but rather we are dreamt.”

I had just dreamed a dream in which
I was using the power of the dream—and my own mind--
to create reality so as to wake up to a more healed,
integrated and whole part of myself.

There was something especially important about how my voice
became the channel through which the spirit
enlivened and inspired itself (as well as me),
singing itself into incarnation.

This recalled the Australian aboriginal belief that
we “sing” the world into being.

I can say that the drinkable form of ayahuasca “liquidified” me,
transforming my seemingly solidified form into one far more fluid.
One thing I remember very vividly is feeling my DNA lighting up,
as if there was a hidden light encoded in my cells
which had been activated by the medicine.
The whole situation was very dreamlike—and healing.

.......as long as I am trying to “solve my problems,”
I have already missed the mark.

Thinking I have a problem is a viewpoint that is reinforcing
the seemingly concrete, existing in stone, reality of the problem,
as well as deceiving me to relate to my situation as being problematic in nature.

Sacred medicine such as ayahuasca always gets down to the same thing for me—showing me how in this moment, and in every moment,
I am the very one who is retrieving, calling forth, investing in, and literally creating the apparent problem that I, with the best of intentions,
then go about trying to heal in a diabolically self-reinforcing feedback loop.

To use a theological metaphor, it is as if I am venturing forth
trying to capture the Devil,
not realizing that the whole project(ion) itself
is sponsored by the Devil within me,
whom I imagine sits safely behind the scenes,
“getting off” on the whole production.

Ayahuasca was ultimately bringing awareness
to how I am actively participating and unconsciously colluding
in the creation of my own suffering and seeming lack of freedom,
so that I could potentially—if I so choose to— dream it differently.

What good is light if it doesn’t illumine the darkness?
We typically think of illumination as “seeing the light,”
but seeing our own darkness is a form of illumination.

It was Jung’s opinion that the idea of the reality of the psyche
is the most important achievement of modern psychology,
even though most contemporary people are unaware of this profound discovery.

How amazing: the greatest discovery of modern psychology
—that the psyche is “real”--
is not even registered by most people’s psyche!

Many people have been conditioned to devalue the psyche,
thinking of its contents as mere nothings, empty fabrications.

To realize the “reality” of the psyche
is to recognize that, quite to the contrary,
its contents—our thoughts, dreams, visions and imaginations--
have a living existence that greatly affects us
in ways we can only imagine.

....the dreaming dimension of our experience
has a very profound reality of its own.
From the point of view of reality, what is primary and most real,
if we can speak in such terms, is the creative imagination itself.

I love what Jung shares in a letter,

“I am indeed convinced that creative imagination
is the only primordial phenomenon accessible to us,
the real Ground of the psyche,
the only immediate reality.”

For the alchemists, the imagination is the Divine Body in every person, a refined, rarefied and “subtle body” that is not humanly constructed, but divinely implanted in us from a source beyond ourselves.

When the alchemists talk about the “imaginative faculty of the soul,” they are giving a clear indication of the secret essence of the alchemical art.
The imaginative faculty of the soul is not merely a human attribute,
but a divine activity of the soul in which the human imagination
participates and bears witness.
The human imagination is enveloped in, suffused with,
and is a reflective iteration of, the unconditioned divine creative imagination,
the imagination that is imagining/dreaming/creating the whole universe
in this and every moment.

Visionary artist and poet William Blake comments,
“The Eternal body of Man is The Imagination, that is, God himself.”

Blake was of the opinion that if we are not
creatively, artistically working—and playing—with our imagination,
we are traitors to our nature.

My dreamlike experiences with ayahuasca
introduced me to the notion that the living spirit which animates ayahuasca
is ultimately to be found inside each one of us;
the actual drinkable form of ayahuasca
is simply a stand-in for this nonlocal spirit.

Just as in my dream,
I can “imagine” that I’m drinking the nonlocal, holy sacrament right now,
and as its dreamlike substance pulses through my veins
I can’t help but to sing its song.

Why is it so difficult for humans to live together?
Because they do not show one another enough attention or respect.
Collective life as practiced in a spiritual brotherhood is also a wonderful opportunity for its members to evolve and expand their consciousness.
Those who lead a solitary life can be selfish and temperamental.
There is no one standing next to them,
no one for whom they must try to watch and improve their behaviour.
But as soon as they begin to have anything to do with other people,
what an effort – and it’s so hard!

When people are aware that they belong to a whole that is much greater than themselves and are careful not to allow their actions, thoughts and feelings
– their internal noise –
to disturb the harmony, it shows that they are evolved.

You will say, ‘What do you mean by their internal noise?’

Yes, all noise is the result of a dissonance, and the internal noise that humans make with their feelings, torments and rebellions disturbs the psychic atmosphere.

Here where I cannot find "myself" as an object,
And have discovered, with a shock…

That “i” am just a thought, a feeling.

Let me just rest here awhile,
Reveling in this Unimaginable Freedom,
Before we go on to think “about” it all.

To come up with words like Consciousness,
Or Brahman,
Or Emptiness...

Or… whatever.

Words to describe what remains,
In that placeless place where I find myself,
Not a thing alive, but only...

The Event of Existence.

Words to explain the unexplainable,
To speak of that which cannot be spoken of,
To describe this Great Mystery...

Within which all descriptions arise.

It's enough for me to simply sit here,
Drowning in Wonder, that "i" do not exist,
And yet… Existence, Consciousness, Bliss…

Is.

On second thought…
You know what?
You go on ahead.

I'll catch up with you later,
And you can tell me all that you've come up with,
In the way of concepts, theories, and conjecture "about"…

This Unfathomable Mystery.

Just please forgive me if I appear uninterested.

who find the courage to keep a “yes” alive in spite of terror;
who come back speechless and trembling with gratitude

blessed are those for whom the encounter enlivens a capacity
and a willingness to hold both hands out to the world
(one to hold grief, the other, gratefulness)
for their heart knows the two as one;

who, without choice, stand naked in knowingness;
