Let go of all your assumptions
and the world will make perfect sense.
In movement, be fluid as water;
at rest, be right as a mirror;
in response, be simple as an echo.

Keep your mind serene,
like the still surface of a lake.
Clear-eyed and imperturbable,
walk thru life
as though you didn’t exist.

When nothing is left to argue with
and there is nothing to oppose,
you will find yourself at peace
and in harmony with all things.

Commentary
Our assumptions about the world become our world.
Confusion projects confusion,
and we wonder why life doesn’t make sense.
“Why do the wicked prosper?”
That’s easy because they do.

If the answer seems flippant,
you might take a closer look at
wicked and prosper.
There are assumptions in each word that
can put you in a padded cell
or inspire you to
exterminate your neighbors.

But if assumptions are questioned deeply enough,
they let go of themselves.
The world becomes intelligible, kind, and problem-free,
because the mind has become clear.
Your you is no longer a something;
it’s fluid, permeable, bright,
it winks in and out of existence like a quark.

When you find nothing to oppose,
there’s nothing that can oppose you.

....that all the birds, be they thirty or forty or more,
are but the shadows cast by that unveiling.
What shadow is ever separated from its maker?
Do you see?
The shadow and its maker are one and the same,
so get over surfaces and delve into mysteries. [3]

The seven valleys the birds cross are as follows:

1. Valley of the Quest,
where the Wayfarer begins by casting aside all dogma,
belief, and unbelief.

2. Valley of Love,
where reason is abandoned for the sake of love.

3. Valley of Knowledge,
where worldly knowledge becomes utterly useless.

4. Valley of Detachment, where all desires and attachments to the world are given up.
Here, what is assumed to be “reality” vanishes.

5. Valley of Unity,
where the Wayfarer realizes that everything is connected and that the Beloved is beyond everything, including harmony, multiplicity, and eternity.

6. Valley of Wonderment,
where, entranced by the beauty of the Beloved,
the Wayfarer becomes perplexed and, steeped in awe,
finds that he or she
has never known or understood anything.

7. Valley of Poverty and Annihilation, where the self disappears into the universe and the Wayfarer becomes timeless, existing in both the past and the future.[4]

Khing, the master carver, made a bell stand
Of precious wood. When it was finished,
All who saw it were astounded. They said it must be
The work of spirits.
The Prince of Lu said to the master carver:
"What is your secret?"

Khing replied: "I am only a workman:
I have no secret. There is only this:
When I began to think about the work you commanded
I guarded my spirit, did not expend it
On trifles, that were not to the point.
I fasted in order to set
My heart at rest.
After three days fasting,
I had forgotten gain and success.
After five days
I had forgotten praise or criticism.
After seven days
I had forgotten my body
With all its limbs.

"By this time all thought of your Highness
And of the court had faded away.
All that might distract me from the work
Had vanished.
I was collected in the single thought
Of the bell stand.

"Then I went to the forest
To see the trees in their own natural state.
When the right tree appeared before my eyes,
The bell stand also appeared in it, clearly, beyond doubt.
All I had to do was to put forth my hand
and begin.

There would have been
No bell stand at all.

Encountered the hidden potential in the wood;
From this live encounter came the work
Which you ascribe to the spirits."

Either you make your energy creative,
or it will turn sour and become destructive.
Energy is a dangerous thing - if you have it, you have to use it creatively,
otherwise sooner or later you will find it has become destructive.
So find something -- whatsoever you like -- to put your energy into.
If you want, painting, or if you want, dancing or singing;
or if you want to play an instrument....
Whatsoever you want, find a way in which you can become completely lost.

If you can be lost paying a guitar -- good!
In those moments when you are lost,
your energy will be released in a creative way.
If you cannot be lost in painting, in singing, in dancing,
in playing guitar or a flute,
then you will find lower ways of being lost:
anger, rage, aggression;
these are lower ways to be lost.
