ONLY SMILED
There is a well known Eastern legend giving the idea of a soul who had found truth.
There was a wall of laughter and of smiles.
This wall existed for ages and many tried to climb it,
but few succeeded.

Those who had climbed upon it saw something beyond,
and so interested were they that they smiled,
climbed over the wall and never returned.

The people of the town
began to wonder
what magic could there be and what attraction,
that whoever climbed the wall
never returned.

So they called it the wall of mystery.

'We must make an enquiry
and send someone who can reach the top,
but we must tie him with a rope to hold him back.'

When the man they had thus sent
reached the top of the wall,
he smiled and tried to jump over it,

'what did you see there?'

This is the condition of the seer.

Alone with God

To live on one of those solitary little islands
has always had great appeal,

Advice on keeping joy moving through you.

Sufis call the wantings nafs.
From the urgent way lovers want each other to the sannyasin's search for truth,
all moving is from the mover.
Every pull draws us to the ocean.
Rumi says it's important
to live the wantings as they come
and not get stuck somewhere,
stagnant.

He was asked once what to do about a young man
caught doing some indecent act.
The story doesn't mention what exactly — masturbation, peeping-tomming, whatever wild wantings young men think to do.

Rumi told them not to worry about it.
'It just means he's growing his feathers.
The dangerous case is a kid who doesn't do indecent acts,
who then leaves the nest without feathers.
One flap and the cat has him.'

Be careful, Rumi suggests,
about shaming sexual behavior in an adolescent
or anyone who hasn't yet has his or her fill of erotic trancing.
Often, the closest we come to surrender is orgasm.
In Rumi's symbology the rooster is a symbol for that energy.

By dissolving into the play.
The nafs are energies that keep us moving,
stopping nowhere.

It is said in the Book of Zohar that the face of the first human
was identical to that of the Creator.
Later on, when the spirit of rebellion had awakened in them
(a process symbolized by the serpent wrapped around
the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil),
they left Paradise where they had lived in the light.
They descended into the denser regions of matter
where they experienced cold, darkness,
sickness and death,
and their faces changed.
Now that they are no longer the faithful image of God,
human beings have lost their power.
The spirits of nature no longer obey them
and instead take pleasure in tormenting them.

But they must strive
to find this primordial face again and,
when they do,
all the spirits of the universe will submit to them once more.
Until then they will continue to resemble the prodigal son
of the Gospel parable who,
having left his father’s house to travel the world,
ends wretchedly as a swineherd.
But this prodigal son finally concludes that he should return to his father’s house. And one day humans will also finally understand
that they must return to the Source
– to the light, love and life of the heavenly Father –
in order to rediscover their true face.

Unconditional Love & the Madness of Devotion

....... I’m saying this is how it is when love transforms itself into devotion.
If you fall in love, you become vulnerable,
but there are still some shreds of sanity in love affairs – you can recover.
But if you become a devotee, there is no sanity left and you cannot recover.
You don’t become a devotee just because
you have ascribed yourself to a certain religion, creed or whatever.
A devotee cannot ascribe himself to anything,
he is just drawn.

A devotee is not somebody’s devotee.
Devotion is a quality.
Devotion means a certain single-pointedness –
you are constantly focused towards one thing.
Once a person has become like this that his thought, emotion, and everything
has become in one direction,
now Grace will naturally happen to that person.
He becomes receptive.
Devotion means it is your intention to dissolve into your object of devotion.
As a devotee, you don’t think about
whether you become a doormat or a crown on someone’s head.
