QUANTUM CONSCIOUSNESS      "...silent awareness..."                                 "...simplicity of being."           October 9, 2020

QUANTUM CONSCIOUSNESS
HAS NO THOUGHTS
 OF
PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE
=
EACH ETERNAL MOMENT
JUST IS…
A BEYOND WORDS AND THOUGHTS
STATE OF BEING
WITH OR WITHOUT
 PHYSICAL BODY

 “… It is only when we meet life from the unknown—and that is what silence really is, an open-ended unknownness—that we can really listen to what is true. And only the truth will set us free …”

~ AMODA MAA
Picture
“… I invite you to fall open, even when your world is falling apart  …”

“… dissolution of the tight knot of ego  …”
which, as Amoda posits,
“… doesn’t necessarily happen in one fell swoop.
It is more likely to be a gradual process of unfoldment--
a weaving in and out of the open spaciousness
of being and an often
indiscernible erosion of resistance to what is.

Your journey of awakening is unique and is unlikely to look like mine
--there is no path but the path you are walking.
Picture
But wherever you are on this path and whatever your circumstances,
in every moment the freedom of openness is available.

And the personal and global crises we experience in today’s world
offer a potent opportunity
 to turn our allegiance
from the war with reality to
the silent awareness that is always here  …”

No wonder she closes the Introduction with:

“… I invite you to fall open, even when your world is falling apart  …”
What is closer than economic collapse?
What is closer than social breakdown?
What is closer than any loss?
What is more intimate and direct than any thought?

Right here, right now
—if you stop and listen, if you stop and feel--
is the warmth of your body, the ebb and flow of your breath,
the pulse in your belly.

Right here, right now
—if you stop and soften--
is the simplicity of being.
This recognition of the truth of your innermost nature
is not a spiritual palliative.
It’s not about denying what’s going on in the world.
It’s not about sticking your head in the sand.

Picture
It’s about meeting reality as it is,
not as you imagine it to be.
Picture
It’s about waking up out of the dream of separation
and returning to the sovereignty
of your innate wholeness.
AMODA MAA

AFTERNOON

The quieter we are,
the more patient and open we are in our sadnesses,
the more deeply and unerringly
a new revelation can enter us,
and the more we can make it our own.

Later on when it ‘happens’
– when it manifests in our response to another person –
we will feel it as belonging to our innermost being.

 Rainer Maria Rilke
 Letters to a Young Poet

"Even a child cannot respond to everything.
 But its antennae quiver at the slightest signal.

After several pages of lyrically recounted
late-summer memories from her childhood,
 Colette contemplates the singular impressionability of
 early memory --
a sort of time-capsule of consciousness
that stays with us for life:

The style of things,
the kind of things that we shall love in later life
are fixed in that moment when the child’s strong gaze
selects and molds the figures of fantasy
that for it are going to last."

excerpt from:
https://mailchi.mp/brainpickings/colette-earthly-paradise-autumn?e=bc3afd75c6
You are neither earth, water, fire, air or even ether.
For liberation know yourself as consisting of consciousness,
the witness of these.
If only you will remain resting in consciousness,
seeing yourself as distinct from the body,
then even now you will become happy, peaceful
 and free from bonds.
Certainly the wise person of self-knowledge,
playing the game of worldly enjoyment,
bears no resemblance whatever to the world’s bewildered beasts of burden.

Truly the yogi feels no excitement
even at being established in that state
which all the Devas from Indra down
yearn for disconsolately.
Picture
He who has known That
is untouched within by good deeds or bad,
just as the sky is not touched by smoke,
however much it may appear to be.

Picture
Who can prevent the great-souled person
who has known this whole world as himself
from living as he pleases?
Of all four categories of beings,
from Brahma down to the last clump of grass,
only the man of knowledge is capable
of eliminating
desire and aversion.
Picture
Rare is the man who knows himself
as the undivided Lord of the world,
and no fear occurs to him
 who knows this from anything.

Righteousness and unrighteousness, pleasure and pain are purely of the mind and are no concern of yours. You are neither the doer nor the reaper of the consequences, so you are always free.

You are the one witness of everything, and are always totally free. The cause of your bondage is that you see the witness as something other than this.
Burn down the forest of ignorance with the fire of the understanding that ‘I am the one pure awareness’, and be happy and free from distress.

That in which all this appears –
imagined like the snake in a rope,
 that joy, supreme joy and awareness
 is what you are,
so be happy.

THE FOOL

1.
By nature my mind is empty.
Even in sleep, I am awake.
I think of things without thinking.

All my impressions of the world
Have dissolved.
2.
My desires have melted away.
So what do I care for money
Or the thieving senses,
For friends or knowledge or holy books?
3.
Liberation,
Bondage,
What are they to me?

What do I care for freedom?

For I have known God,
The infinite Self,
The witness of all things
4.
Without, a fool
Within, free of thought

I do as I please,
And only those like me
Understand my ways.

AFTERNOON
Another Tune

The personality is a phantom even less substantial than the body,
being an ephemeral work of art like a musical composition
that dies away as it is played.
But when it comes to silence we hear another tune,
for we are reduced to the guileless simplicity
of listening to what is – now.
This is really all there is to contemplative mysticism –
to be aware without judgment or comment
of what is actually happening at this moment,
both outside ourselves and within,
listening even to our involuntary thoughts
as if they were no more than the sound of rain.
This is possible only when it is clear
that there is nothing else to do,
and no way onward or back.

The Madman - Kahlil Gibran & Balthazar

And when I reached the market place, a youth standing on a
house-top cried, "He is a madman."  I looked up to behold
him; the sun kissed my own naked face for the first time.
For the first time the sun kissed my own naked face and my
soul was inflamed with love for the sun, and I wanted my
masks no more.  And as if in a trance I cried,"Blessed,
blessed are the thieves who stole my masks."

Thus I became a madman.

Kahlil Gibran
Picture
In an insane world you must be mad to be sane.  In an
upside down world true sanity appears as strange and
dangerous.  Things are so backwards that it seems impossible
to be happy, that it seems dangerous to love, that it seems as
madness to be honest and authentic.

In this absurd world the only thing that makes any sense is to
be radically authentic to ones self - even if it is the opposite
of society.
The Madman

The one who unquestioningly follows their heart is a madman.
The one who unfailing listens to the soul and heeds its urgings
is the madman.

The madman is dangerous - not that he will physically hurt you,
but he will shatter your illusions.  He is unpredictable, wild and
untamed.  You will feel uneasy around him because he does not
prop up your house of lies.
She cannot be contained or influenced.  You cannot bribe her
with money or status.  You cannot control her through fear or
desire.

The madman loves his madness, he does not reject it.  For he
knows that his madness is his treasure, is his very life-force
itself.  Only the twinkle in his eye betrays the chaotic
kosmos within.
He is mad precisely because he is not mad.
She is utterly natural, spontaneous, unburdened, innocent.

The mind is insane.  Society is insane.  And the mind is
society's conditioning in you.
Normal" is to be profoundly inwardly sick.  Beneath nearly
everyone's smiley mask is a mount of pain, fear, sorrow anger,
anxiety, neuroticism, and insanity.  Everyone you see is a
dormant walking volcano that only doesn't erupt because
they have learned to suppress their inner energies.

It is the mind which is truly insane - the mind acting without
the lead of the heart and soul.

Picture
Picture
The Freedom of Madness

A man needs a healthy dose of madness, else he will never
do anything.....real.  If you want to be truly alive and truly
free you must be mad.

Mad to be oneself,
And mad enough to lose oneself.
Picture
Mad enough to risk everything for freedom, for truth,
for the heart, for love.
Mad enough to lose all respectability if it means staying
true to life and oneself.
Picture
Learn to love your madness, your primordial chaos.
Dare to be ecstatic,

dare to be untamed.

Dare to be the Madman.

Drs. Laing and Berke AND Mary Barnes...

*************
"In 1965, Mary Barnes arrives at Kingsley Hall, the first resident of an alternative treatment centre for mental illness founded by the controversial psychotherapist, R. D. Laing. Having undergone shock therapy and insulin injections for her schizophrenia with little result, it seems unlikely that Mary will ever leave institutional care.

But her life changes when she meets Joseph Berke, her therapist. Encouraged to regress to a childlike state, Mary discovers a way through her madness with the paints and crayons given to her by Berke, creating the fantastic canvasses and drawings which would later bring her fame as an artist.
David Edgar’s play is adapted from Mary Barnes: Two Accounts of a Journey Through Madness, written by Mary Barnes and Joseph Berke. Edgar worked closely with both authors during the writing of this uniquely personal piece which challenges traditional assumptions about the reality of living with and treating mental illness.
Mary Barnes received its world premiere in August 1978 at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre Studio, before transferring to the Royal Court Theatre, London."

AFTERNOON
Spontaneous action will take place irrespective of conceptual volition or intention.
In fact, strictly speaking,
all action is spontaneous action.
It is for this reason that a man of true understanding is usually an enigma to most people--precisely because his actions are natural and spontaneous, they are completely unpredictable!
It is when the mind gets involved
that a problem becomes a problem.
Otherwise it is just a thought.
And if that thought is merely witnessed,
it disappears.

question

What is the deep listening? Sama is
a greeting from the secret ones inside
the heart, a letter. The branches of
your intelligence grow new leaves in
the wind of this listening. The body
reaches a peace. Rooster sound comes,
reminding you of your love for dawn.
Picture
5/6/15
The reed flute and the singer's lips:
the knack of how spirit breathes into
us
becomes as simple and ordinary as
eating and drinking. The dead rise with
the pleasure of listening. If someone
can't hear a trumpet melody, sprinkle
dirt on his head and declare him dead.

Listen, and feel the beauty of your
separation, the unsayable absence.
Picture
4/2/19
There's a moon inside every human being.
Learn to be companions with it. Give
more of your life to this listening. As
brightness is to time, so you are to
the one who talks to the deep ear in
your chest.
Picture

I should sell my tongue
and buy a thousand ears when that
one steps near and begins to speak.

AFTERNOON
There are infinite numbers of lines that join us to things.
 They are real lines.
You can feel them.
The most difficult part about
the warrior’s way is to realize
that the world is a feeling.
When one is not-doing,
one is feeling the world,
and one feels the world through its lines.

1
With the pincers of truth I have plucked
From the dark corners of my heart
The thorn of many judgments.

I sit in my own splendor.

 Wealth or pleasure,
Duty or discrimination,
Duality or nonduality,
What are they to me?

What is yesterday,
 Tomorrow,
Or today?

What is space,
Or eternity?

I sit in my own radiance.

What is the Self,
Or the not-Self?

What is thinking,
Or not thinking?

What is good or evil?

I sit in my own splendor.

I sit in my own radiance,
And I have no fear.

Waking, Dreaming, Sleeping,
What are they to me?

Or even ecstasy?

Gross or subtle?

The world and all its works,
Life or death,
What are they to me?

Or oneness?

Why talk of these!

WHEN YOU ARE FREE
JOHN MCINTOSH

When you are FREE of conditioning nothing ‘sticks’
to divert your Attention from Who You Really Are.

-The glamor of the world swirls around you without effect

-Sorrow begs you to acknowledge its victim-hood
but is met only with compassion and never sympathy
that would fan the flames of that illusion
-Special abilities entice you to broadcast
your new-found power over illusion
but you remain ‘fixed’ on Truth and Peace ‘IS’

-Without effort,
your radiance touches and embraces the entire dream
and every version of dreamer within, that still sleeps
-Without any ‘doing’,
an infinite Light shines on every dark corner of the grand dream

-Many recoil in shame or fear as their disguises melt away

-Others approach with caution and scepticism,
dazzled by this ‘influence’ that lifts and inspires
but asks nothing
-Some few gravitate
to the boundless Life You Are
as their ancient burdens lose control

-Each one who still sleeps,
is in some way affected
and at the level of their open-ness,
shift ever more inward toward their own Freedom
Picture
-If called to act you are shown precisely what to do,
where to go,
what to say and to whom,
unencumbered by the conditioning
that once colored and tainted every action,
every word, every thought
-Your actions are Pure
and when complete are departed from completely

The Master
Verses 81-100

81
Nothing he hopes to win,
Nothing he fears to lose.

His mind is cool and drenched with nectar.
Picture
82
Free from desire,
He neither praises the peaceful
Nor blames the wicked.

The same in joy and sorrow,
He is always happy.

He sees there is nothing to do.
Picture
83
He does not hate the world.
 He does not seek the Self.

He is free from joy and sorrow.

He is not alive,
And he is not dead.
Picture
84
He is not attached to his family.

Free from the desire of the senses,
He does not care about his body.

The master expects nothing,
And he shines.
Picture
85
Whatever befalls him,
 He is always happy.

He wanders where he will.

And wherever he finds himself
When the sun sets,
There he lies down to rest.
Picture
86
He does not care if the body lives or dies.

 He is so firmly set in his own being,
He rises above the round of birth and death.
Picture
 87
He is full of joy.

Attached to nothing,
Free from possessions,
He stands on his own.

His doubts dispelled,
He wanders where he will,
Never setting one thing against another.
Picture
 88
The master shines.

 He never says "mine."
Gold, stone, earth--
They are all the same to him.

He is not bound by sloth,
Nor consumed by his own activity.

He has severed the knots which bind his heart.
Picture
89
Who can compare with him?
Indifferent to everything,
He is happy and he is free.
There is not the least desire in his heart.
Picture
 90
Only the man without desire
Sees without seeing,
Speaks without speaking,
Knows without knowing.
Picture
91
In his view of things
 Good and evil have melted away.

A king or a beggar,
Whoever is free from desire shines!
Picture
92
He is utterly without guile.
He has found his way.
He is simplicity itself.

He cares nothing for restraint,
Or abandon.

He has no interest in finding the truth.
Picture
 93
He has no desires.
 He rests happily in the Self.

His sorrows are over.
How can anyone tell what he feels inside?
Picture
 94
Even when he is sound asleep,
He is not asleep.

Even when he is dreaming,
He does not dream.

Even when he is awake,
He is not awake.

Step by step,
Whatever befalls him,
He is happy.
Picture
95
 He thinks without thinking.
He feels without feeling.

He is intelligent,
But he has no mind.

He has personality,
But with no thought for himself.

AFTERNOON
96
He is not happy,
 Nor is he sad.

He is not detached,
Nor is he bound.

He is not free,
Nor does he seek freedom.

He is not this.
He is not that.
Picture
97
 Amid distractions,
 He is undistracted.

In meditation,
He does not meditate.

Foolish,
He is not a fool.
Knowing everything,

He knows nothing.
Picture
98
He always lives within.
He is everywhere the same.

Action or duty are nothing to him.

Because he is free from desire,
He never worries about what he has done
Or has not done.

Picture
99
Blame does not disturb him,
Nor does praise delight him.

He neither rejoices in life,
Nor fears death.
Picture
 100
 His mind is calm.

Never seeking the solitude of the forest,
Nor running from the crowd.

Always and everywhere,
He is one and the same

When things are in harmony with the divine will,
everything is there;
we just glance towards a thing and it is found,
as in the saying,
'Word spoken, action done.'
Picture
When we strive with all the material in our hands
and yet cannot achieve our desire,
that is when the matter is contrary
to the divine will.
Picture
Our success or failure all depends
upon the harmony or disharmony
of our individual will with the divine will. ...
Picture
Contentment and perfect resignation
open up a harmonious feeling and bring the divine will
into harmony with our own.

Our blessing now becomes a divine blessing,
our words divine words,
our atmosphere a divine atmosphere,
although we seem to be limited beings;
for our will becomes absorbed into the whole,
and so our will becomes the will of God.

For the Interim Time
– John O’Donohue
When near the end of day, life has drained
Out of light, and it is too soon
For the mind of night to have darkened things,

No place looks like itself, loss of outline
Makes everything look strangely in-between,
Unsure of what has been, or what might come.

In this wan light, even trees seem groundless.
In a while it will be night, but nothing
Here seems to believe the relief of dark.

Picture
You are in this time of the interim
Where everything seems withheld.

The path you took to get here has washed out;
The way forward is still concealed from you.

“The old is not old enough to have died away;
The new is still too young to be born.”

You cannot lay claim to anything;
In this place of dusk,
Your eyes are blurred;
And there is no mirror.
Picture
Everything else has lost sight of your heart
And you can see nowhere to put your trust;
You know you have to make your own way through.

As far as you can, hold your confidence.
Do not allow your confusion to squander
This call which is loosening
Your roots in false ground,
That you might come free
From all you have outgrown.

What is being transfigured here is your mind,
And it is difficult and slow to become new.
The more faithfully you can endure here,
The more refined your heart will become
For your arrival in the new dawn.

The Master
Verses  61-80

61
The fool is busy
Even when he is still.
Even when he is busy
The master gathers the fruits of stillness.

Picture
 62
The fool often spurns his possessions.
The master is no longer attached to his body.
So how can he feel attraction or aversion?
Picture
63
The awareness of the fool is always limited
By thinking, or by trying not to think.
The awareness of the man who lives within,
Though he may be busy thinking,
Is beyond even awareness itself.
Picture
 64
The master is like a child.
All his actions are without motive.
He is pure.
Whatever he does, he is detached.
Picture
 65
He is blessed.
He understands the nature of the Self.
His mind is no longer thirsty.
He is the same under all conditions,
Whatever he sees or hears,
Or smells or touches or tastes.
Picture
 66
The master is like the sky.
He never changes.
What does the world matter to him,
Or its reflection?
What does he care about seeking,
 Or the end of seeking?
Picture
 67
He is ever the same.
The victory is his.
He has conquered the world.
He is the embodiment
Of his own perfect essence,
 By nature one with the infinite.
Picture
68
What more is there to say?
He knows the truth.
He has no desire for pleasure or liberation.
At all times, in all places,
He is free from passion.
Picture
 69
He has given up the duality of the world
Which arises with the mind
And is nothing more than a name.
He is pure awareness.
What is there left for him to do?
Picture
70
The man who is pure knows for certain
That nothing really exists;
It is all the work of illusion.
He sees what cannot be seen.
His nature is peace.
 71
He does not see the world of appearances.
So what do rules matter to him,
Or dispassion, renunciation, and self-control?
 His form is pure and shining light.
Picture
72
He does not see the world.
So what does he care for joy or sorrow,
Bondage or liberation?
He is infinite and shining.
 73
Before the awakening of understanding
The illusion of the world prevails.
But the master is free of passion.
He has no "I,"
He has no "mine,"
And he shines!
74
He sees that the Self never suffers or dies.
So what does he care for knowledge
Or the world?
Or the feeling "I am the body,"
 "The body is mine"?

75
Th
e moment a fool gives up concentration
And his other spiritual practices,
He falls prey to fancies and desires.
76
Even after hearing the truth,
 The fool clings to his folly.
He tries hard to look calm and composed,
But inside he is full of cravings.
 77
When the truth is understood,
Work falls away.
Though in the eyes of others
The master may seem to work,
In reality he has no occasion
To say or to do anything.
Picture
78
He has no fear.
He is always the same.
He has nothing to lose.
For him there is no darkness,
There is no light.
There is nothing at all.
79
 He has no being of his own.
His nature cannot be described.
What is patience to him,
 Or discrimination or fearlessness?

80
In the eyes of the master
There is nothing at all.
There is no heaven.
There is no hell.
There is no such thing as liberation in life.
 What more is there to say?

In one who perceives impermanence,
the perception of nonself becomes firmly established;

Pausing in timeless awareness:
 The Indian sage Nisargadatta
once advised a student who asked for guidance,
“Go back! Go back!”
Go back to the place where you begin, right now,
the place of spacious awareness
that hosts all the phenomena you experience.
It is a simple move,
although nothing really moves.

Just open up to the clearing you already are
and pause there for a moment or two.
When you do that your whole life is refreshed.

Picture
And beauty is not a need but an ecstasy.
It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth,
But rather a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted.

It is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear,
But rather an image you see though you close your eyes
and a song you hear though you shut your ears.

It is not the sap within the furrowed bark,
nor a wing attached to a claw,
But rather a garden for ever in bloom
and a flock of angels for ever in flight.

People of Orphalese,
 beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.
But you are life and you are the veil.
Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.

But you are eternity and you are the mirror.
Kahlil Gibran
Excerpt from BEAUTY
The Prophet

http://www.katsandogz.com/onbeauty.html
We usually do not look
into what is really there in front of us.
We see life through a screen of thoughts and concepts,
and we mistake those mental objects for reality.
  We get so caught up in
this endless thought-stream
that reality flows by unnoticed.

We  spend our time engrossed in activity,
caught up in an eternal flight
from pain and unpleasantness.
We spend our energies
trying to make ourselves better,
trying to bury our fears.

We are endlessly seeking  security.
 Meanwhile,
the world of real experience flows by
untouched and unnoticed...

The Master
Verses 41-60

41
The fool tries to control his mind.
 How can he ever succeed?

Mastery always comes naturally
To the man who is wise
And who loves himself.
Picture
42
 One man believes in existence,
Another says, "There is nothing!"

Rare is the man who believes in neither.

He is free from confusion.
Picture
43
The fool may know that the Self
Is pure and indivisible.

But because of his folly,
He never finds it.

He suffers all his life.
Picture
44
The mind of a man who longs to be free
Stumbles without support.

But the mind of a man who is already free
Stands on its own.

 It is empty of passion.
Picture
45
The senses are tigers.

 When a timid man catches sight of them,
He runs for safety to the nearest cave,
To practice control and meditation.
Picture
46
But a man without desires is a lion.

 When the senses see him,
It is they who take flight!

They run away like elephants,
As quietly as they can.

And if they cannot escape,
They serve him like slaves.
Picture
47
A man who has no doubts
  And whose mind is one with the Self
No longer looks for ways to find freedom.

He lives happily in the world,
Seeing and hearing,
Touching and smelling and tasting.
Picture
48
Just by hearing the truth
He becomes spacious
And his awareness pure.

He is indifferent
To striving or stillness.

He is indifferent
To his own indifference.
Picture
  49
The master is like a child.
He does freely whatever comes his way,
Good or bad.
Picture
 50
By standing on his own
A man finds happiness.

By standing on his own
A man finds freedom.

By standing on his own
He goes beyond the world.

By standing on his own
He finds the end of the way.

Picture
51
When a man realizes
He is neither the doer nor the enjoyer,
The ripples of his mind are stilled.

Picture
 52
The master's way is unfettered
And free of guile.
He shines.

But for the fool
There is no peace.
His thoughts are full of desire.
Picture
53
The master is free of his mind,
 And his mind is free.

In this freedom he plays.
He has a wonderful time!

Or he withdraws
And lives in a mountain cave.
Picture
 54
 If the master encounters
A king or a woman
Or someone he dearly loves,
He is without desire.

And when he honors
A god or a holy place
Or a man versed in the scriptures,
There is no longing in his heart.

 None at all!
Picture
 55
He is unperturbed
 Even when his servants despise him,
Or his wives, sons, and grandsons mock him.

  Even when his whole family makes fun of him,
He is undismayed.
Picture
  56
 For him there is no pain in pain,
 No pleasure in pleasure.

Only those who are like him
Can know his exaltation.
Picture
57
He has no form.
His form is emptiness.

He is constant and pure.

He has no sense of duty,
Which only binds men to the world.

Picture
Picture
58
The master fulfills his duties
And is always untroubled.

The fool does nothing
And is always troubled and distracted.
Picture
59
The master goes about his business
 With perfect equanimity.

He is happy when he sits,
Happy when he talks and eats,
Happy asleep,
Happy coming and going.

Picture
 60
Because he knows his own nature,
He does what he has to without feeling ruffled
Like ordinary people.

Smooth and shining,
Like the surface of a vast lake.

His sorrows are at an end.

YOU MUST DISSOLVE

When full Conscious Awareness ‘is’ …
the mind has vanished as you know it.
There is no sense of

 -planning
-fixing
-working on
-getting better
-being your best
… there is no ‘you.
Picture
Love, for example … just IS.
IT emanates naturally as a radiance of Awareness
and not as an intentional thought projection.
You cannot ‘dance at two weddings’.
You cannot retain your personal identity … ‘and’ know Real Freedom,
‘you’ must dissolve into the God-SELF completely.

Picture
While you remain in a body
and navigate the grand dream
you may possess many forms of identification,
but no such person will exist any longer.
This projected false self will have disappeared
back into the infinite ocean of ONE.

This is the only death you fear and must be accepted to return HOME.

Verses 21-40

21
He has no desires.
 He has cast off his chains.
He walks on air.

He is free,
Tumbling like a leaf in the wind,
From life to life.

Picture
22
He has gone beyond the world,
Beyond joy and sorrow.

His mind is always cool.
He lives as if he had no body.

Picture
23
His mind is cool and pure.
He delights in the Self.

There is nothing he wishes to renounce.
He misses nothing.
Picture
24
His mind is naturally empty.
He does as he pleases.

He is not an ordinary man.
Honor and dishonor mean nothing to him.
Picture
25
 "The body does this, not I."
"My nature is purity."

With these thoughts,
Whatever he does,
He does nothing.
Picture
26
But he pretends not to know.

He finds freedom in this life,
But he acts like an ordinary man.

Yet he is not a fool.

Happy and bright,
He thrives in the world.
Picture
27
Weary of the vagaries of the mind,
He is at last composed.

He does not know or think,
Or hear or see.
Picture
28
 Undistracted,
He does not meditate.

Unbound,
He does not seek freedom.

He sees the world,
But knows it is an illusion.

He lives like God.
Picture
 29
Even when he is still,
The selfish man is busy.

 Even when he is busy,
The selfless man is still.
Picture
30
He is free.

 His mind is unmoved
By trouble or pleasure.

Free from action, desire or doubt,
He is still, and he shines!
Picture
31
His mind does not strive
To meditate or to act.

It acts or meditates without purpose.
Picture
32
When a fool hears the truth,
He is muddled.

When a wise man hears it,
He goes within.

He may look like a fool,
But he is not muddled.
Picture
33
The fool practices concentration
 And control of the mind...
Picture
Cock Fight in Yard after Sunrise
...But the master is like a man asleep.
He rests in himself
And finds nothing more to do.

Picture
34
Striving or still,
The fool never finds peace....
Picture
Crowing Cock
...But the master finds it
Just by knowing how things are.
Picture
   35
In this world
Men try all kinds of paths.

But they overlook the Self,
The Beloved.

Awake and pure,
Flawless and full,
Beyond the world.

Picture
36
The fool will never find freedom
 By practicing concentration.

But the master never fails.

Just by knowing how things are,
He is free and constant.
Picture
 37
Because the fool wants to become God,
 He never finds him.

The master is already God,
Without ever wishing to be
Picture
38
The fool has no foundation.
 Fretting to be free,
He only keeps the world spinning.

But the master cuts at its root,
The root of all suffering.

39
Because the fool looks for peace,
 He never finds it.

But the master is always at peace,
Because he understands how things are.
Picture
40
If a man looks to the world,
 How can he see himself?

The master is never distracted by this or that.

He sees himself,
The Self that never changes.

Feel relief flood into every

Nothing to run from or run

Awareness knowing itself as

awareness waking up to truth.

Danna Faulds

Sun says, “Be your own
illumination.” Wren says,
“Sing your heart out,
all day long.” Stream says,
 “Do not stop for any
obstacle.” Oak says,
“When the wind blows,
bend easily, and trust
your roots to hold.”
Stars say, “What you see
is one small slice of a
single modest galaxy.
Remember that vastness
cannot be grasped by mind.”
Ant says, “Small does not

The Gentle Voice
 - John O'Donohue

When you take the time
to draw on your listening-imagination,
you will begin to hear this gentle voice
 at the heart of your life.
It is deeper and surer than all the other voices of disappointment,
unease, self-criticism and bleakness.
All holiness is about learning to hear
the voice of your own soul.
It is always there
and the more deeply you learn to listen,
 the greater surprises
and discoveries that will unfold.
To enter into the gentleness of your own soul
changes the tone and quality of your life.
Your life is no longer consumed by
hunger for the next event, experience or achievement.
You gain a new respect for yourself and others.
 You begin to see through
the enchanting veils of illusion
that you had taken for reality.
You no longer squander yourself
on things and situations
that deplete your essence.
You know now that your true source
is not outside you.
Your soul is your true source,
 and a new energy and passion
awakens within you.

Chapter 18
The Master

1
Love your true Self,
Which is naturally happy
And peaceful and bright!

Awaken to your own nature,
 And all delusion melts like a dream.
2
How much pleasure you take
In acquiring worldly goods!

But to find happiness
You must give them all up.
Picture
3
The sorrows of duty,
 Like the heat of the sun,
Have scorched your heart.

But let stillness fall on you
With its sweet and cooling showers,
And you will find happiness.
Picture
4
For the world is nothing.
It is only an idea.

But the essence of what is
And of what is not
Can never fail.
Picture
5
The Self is always the same,
 Already fulfilled,
Without flaw or choice or striving.

Close at hand,
But boundless.
Picture
6
When the Self is known,
All illusions vanish.

The veil falls,
And you see clearly.

Your sorrows are dispelled.

Picture
7
For the Self is free
And lives forever.

Everything else is imagination,
Nothing more!

Because he understands this,
The master acts like a child.
Picture
8
When you know you are God
And that what is and what is not
Are both imaginary,
And you are at last free of desire,
Then what is there left
To know or to say or to do?

Picture
9
For the Self is everything.

 When the seeker knows this,
He falls silent.

He no longer thinks,
"I am this, I am not that."

Such thoughts melt away.
Picture
10
He is still.

Without pleasure or pain,
Distraction or concentration,
Learning or ignorance.
Picture
11
 His nature is free of conditions.

 Win or lose,
It makes no difference to him.

Alone in the forest or out in the world,
A god in heaven or a simple beggar,
It makes no difference!

Picture
 12
He is free of duality.

Wealth or pleasure,
Duty or discrimination
Mean nothing to him.

What does he care
What is accomplished or neglected?
Picture
13
Finding freedom in this life,
 The seeker takes nothing to heart,
Neither duty nor desire.

He has nothing to do
But to live out his life.

Picture
14
The master lives beyond the boundaries of desire.
 Delusion or the world,

Meditation on the truth,
Liberation itself--
What are they to him?
Picture
15
You see the world
 And you try to dissolve it.

But the master has no need to.
He is without desire.

For though he sees,
He sees nothing.

16
 When you have seen God
You meditate on Him,
Saying to yourself, "I am He."

But when you are without thought
And you understand there is only one,
Without a second,
On whom can you meditate?

Picture
17
When you are distracted,
You practice concentration.

But the master is undistracted.

He has nothing to fulfill.
What is there left for him to accomplish?
18
He acts like an ordinary man.
But inside he is quite different.

He sees no imperfection in himself,
Nor distraction,
Nor any need for meditation.
19
 He is awake,
 Fulfilled,
Free from desire.

He neither is nor is not.

He looks busy,
But he does nothing.
20
Striving or still,
 He is never troubled.

He does whatever comes his way,
And he is happy.

from Rumi:

All day I think about it, then at night I say it.
Where did I come from, and what am I supposed to be doing?
I have no idea.
My soul is from elsewhere, I'm sure of that,
And I intend to end up there.
Picture
This drunkenness began in some other tavern.
When I get back around to that place,
I'll be completely sober. Meanwhile,
I'm like a bird from another continent, sitting in this aviary.
The day is coming when I fly off,
But who is it now in my ear who hears my voice?
Who says words with my mouth?
Picture
Who looks out with my eyes? What is the soul?
I cannot stop asking.
If I could taste one sip of an answer,
I could break out of this prison for drunks.
I didn't come here of my own accord, and I can't leave that way.
Whoever brought me here will have to take me home.

This poetry. I never know what I'm going to say.
I don't plan it.
When I'm outside the saying of it,
I get very quiet and rarely speak at all.
We have a huge barrel of wine, but no cups.
That's fine with us. Every morning
We glow and in the evening we glow again.”

Continuing Chapter 17

Beyond All
Verses 11-20
11
And the man who is free
 Always lives in his heart.
His heart is always pure.

Whatever happens,
He is free of all desires.
12
Whatever he sees or hears or touches,
Whatever he smells or tastes,
Whatever he acquires,
He is free.

Free from striving,
And from stillness.

For indeed he is a great soul.
13
Without blame or praise,
Anger or rejoicing.

He gives nothing.
He takes nothing.

He wants nothing,
Nothing at all.
14
And whoever draws near him,
 A woman full of passion
Or Death Himself,
He is not shaken.

He stays in his heart.

He is free indeed!
15
It is all the same to him.
Man or woman,
Good fortune or bad,
Happiness or sorrow.

It makes no difference.
He is serene.
16
 The world
  no longer holds him.
 He has gone beyond
The bounds of human nature.

Without compassion
Or the wish to harm,
Without pride or humility.

Nothing disturbs him.
Nothing surprises him.
17
Because he is free,
 He neither craves nor disdains
The things of the world.

He takes them as they come.

His mind is always detached.
18
His mind is empty.
 He is not concerned with meditation,
Or the absence of it,
Or the struggle between good and evil.

He is beyond all,
Alone.
19
No "I,"
 No "mine."

He knows there is nothing.

All his inner desires have melted away.

Whatever he does,
He does nothing.
20
His mind has stopped working!

It has simply melted away. . .

And with it,
Dreams and delusions and dullness.

And for what he has become,
There is no name.

AFTERNOON
The only problem with human beings is that they are arrogant,
because that’s what thinking is.
This is in essence ‘I know’.
Wisdom is being in the void.
To be thoughtless.
Only by being in the void can the Light come through.
As long as I have something going on in my mind
the Light can’t come through.
The Light can only come in when the mind is cleared
–in a state of silence.

– Dr Hew Len, Shamanic Wisdomkeepers

You need not do anything.
Remain sitting at your table and listen.
You need not even listen, just wait.

You need not even wait,
just learn to be quiet, still and solitary,
and the world will freely offer itself to you unmasked.

It has no choice, it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.

—Franz Kafka
Give up to grace.
The ocean takes care of each wave ‘til
it gets to shore.
You need more help than you know.

whoever you are

You must habit yourself to the dazzle of the light
and of every moment of your life.
—Walt Whitman
I believe in an invisible universe
in which we mark out our dark accomplishment.
I feel the energy of the light that makes the stone break into music,
and I suffer from the arrow-tip of longing
that pierces us to death from the very beginning
and pushes us to go searching beyond,
where the wash of uncertainty begins.

—Nelly Sachs to Paul Celan
Stockholm, 1. 9. 1958 –
from their Correspondence
...
There is, in sanest hours,
a consciousness, a thought that rises,
independent, lifted out from all else, calm,
 like the stars, shining eternal.
This is the thought of identity -
yours for you, whoever you are, as mine for me.
Miracle of miracles, beyond statement,
most spiritual and vaguest of earth's dreams,
yet hardest basic fact, and only entrance to all facts.

In such devout hours,
in the midst of the significant wonders of heaven and earth,
(significant only because of the Me in the centre)
creeds, conventions, fall away and become of no account
before this simple idea.
Under the luminousness of real vision,
it alone takes possession,
takes value.

Like the shadowy dwarf in the fable, once liberated and look'd upon,
it expands over the whole earth,
and spreads to the roof of heaven.

The quality of being, in the object’s self,
according to its own central  idea and purpose,
and of growing therefrom and thereto
— not criticism by other standards, and adjustments thereto --
is the lesson of Nature.

Heart-to-Heart Resonance - Eric Baret and Rumi

The heart is yearning to be open.
When
a heart meets an open heart,
when a match approaches a lighted match,
it rejoices in unity, in the flame...
This is called transmission.
But nothing is transmitted.
No one transmits, no one receives;
There is [just] heart-to-heart [resonance].
There is only one heart.

Eric Baret
Some souls have gotten free of their bodies.
Do you see them?
Open your eyes for those who escape to meet
with other escapees, whose hearts associate in a way
they have of leaving their false selves to live
in a truer Self...

Rumi
From: Escaping to the Forest

What does pre-eternity mean to you?
What is your origin?  The Source?
What is spirit?

Spend your life finding out your own state.
Those other mysteries will come clear.

God is depth.  And you, you are also deep.
The same depth is in you.

Don't worry about terminology, pre-existence,
the original face, spirit, soul.
Search within yourself.
The great mystery is there.

I want someone with a living pulse,
a living friend...

Forget Everything

1
My child,
 You may read or discuss scripture
As much as you like.

But until you forget everything,
You will never live in your heart.
Picture
2
You are wise.
You play and work and meditate.

But still your mind desires
That which is beyond everything,
Where all desires vanish.

3
Striving is the root of sorrow.

But who understands this?

Only when you are blessed
With the understanding of this teaching
Will you find freedom.

4
Who is lazier than the master?
He has trouble even blinking!

But only he is happy.
No one else!
5
Seeing to this,
Neglecting that. . .

But when the mind stops setting
One thing against another,
It no longer craves pleasure.

It no longer cares for wealth
Or religious duties or salvation.

6
Craving the pleasures of the senses,
You suffer attachment.

Disdaining them,
You learn detachment.

But if you desire nothing,
And disdain nothing,
Neither attachment nor detachment bind you.
Picture
7
When you live without discrimination,
  Desire arises.

When desire persists,
Feelings of preference arise,
Of liking and disliking.

They are the root and branches of the world.

Picture
8
From activity, desire.
From renunciation, aversion.

But the man of wisdom is a child.
He never sets one thing against another.

It is true!
He is a child.

Picture
9
If you desire the world,
You may try to renounce it In order to escape sorrow.
Instead, renounce desire!

Then you will be free of sorrow,
And the world will not trouble you.
Picture
10
 If you desire liberation,
But you still say "mine,"
If you feel you are the body,
You are not a wise man or seeker.

You are simply a man who suffers.

AFTERNOON
Character is higher than intellect.
Thinking is the function.
Living is the functionary.
The stream retreats to its source.

A great soul will be strong to live, as well as strong to think.
Does he lack organ or medium to impart his truths?
He can still fall back on this elemental force of living them.

This is a total act.
Thinking is a partial act.
The solar loses no hour which the man lives.

Creating Enmity - J. Krishnamurti

Surely that thing which you fight you become.
  If I am angry and you meet me with anger what is the result?
More anger.

You have become that which I am.
  If I am evil and you fight me with evil means
then you also become evil,
however righteous you may feel.

If I am brutal and you use brutal methods to overcome me,
then you become brutal like me.
And this we have done for thousands of years.

Surely there is a different approach than to meet hate by hate.
If I use violent methods to quell anger in myself
then I am using wrong means for a right end,
and thereby the right end ceases to be.
In this there is no understanding.
Anger is to be understood;
it is not to be overcome through violent means.
Anger may be the result of many causes and
without comprehending them there is no escape from anger.

We have created the enemy,
and becoming ourselves the enemy
in no way brings about an end to enmity.
We have to understand the cause of our enmity
and cease to feed it by our thought, feeling, and action.
This is an arduous task demanding constant
self-awareness [and Self awareness] and intelligent pliability,
for what we are society is...

The enemy and the friend are the outcome of our thought and action.
We are responsible for creating enmity
and so it is more important to be aware of our own thought and action
than to be concerned with the foe and the friend,
for right thinking puts an end to division.

Love transcends the friend and the enemy.

The Clear Space of Awareness
Verses 11-20
(continued from yesterday)

11
You are the endless sea
 In whom all the worlds like waves
Naturally rise and fall.

You have nothing to win,
Nothing to lose
.
12
 Child,
You are pure awareness,
Nothing less.

You and the world are one.

So who are you to think
You can hold on to it,
Or let it go?

 How could you!
13
You are the clear space of awareness,
Pure and still,
In whom there is no birth,
No activity, No "I."

You are one and the same.
You cannot change or die.
14
 You are in whatever you see.
You alone.

Just as bracelets and bangles
And dancing anklets
 Are all of the same gold.
15
"I am not this."
"I am He."

Give up such distinctions.
Know that everything is the Self.
Rid yourself of all purpose.

And be happy.

Picture
16
The world only arises from ignorance.
You alone are real.

There is no one,
Not even God,
Separate from yourself.

 17
You are pure awareness.

 The world is an illusion,
Nothing more.

When you understand this fully,
Desire falls away.

You find peace.

 For indeed!
 There is nothing.
18
 In the ocean of being
There is only one.

There was and there will be
Only one.

You are already fulfilled.
How can you be bound or free?

Wherever you go,
 Be happy.
19
Never upset your mind
 With yes and no.

Be quiet.
You are awareness itself.

Live in the happiness
Of your own nature,
Which is happiness itself.
20
What is the use of thinking?

 Once and for all,
Give up meditation.
Hold nothing in your mind.

You are the Self,
And you are free

AFTERNOON
The life of a sage appears to others
to be as purposeless as the actions of an infant.
the infant lives in the bliss of ignorance,
while the self-realized sage lives in the bliss
beyond both ignorance and knowledge.

In fact the sage is no longer even an individual,
in spite of the presence
of a fully developed intellect.

Egocentricity & Suffering - Cheri Huber

Egocentricity is the process of wanting something other than
what is.  Egocentricity means there is an "I" who [feels]
separate from everything else and doesn't like it; one thing is
happening, but I want a different thing to be happening
[which causes suffering].  Egocentricity is that constant
concern with how I feel, what I think, what I'm doing, what
I want - looking at what is and seeing it as inadequate.
My identity is maintained by the struggle of wanting
something other than what is [causing suffering].

Picture
Instead of spending our time trying to avoid suffering,
we must find the willingness to go directly into it.
Whenever anything causes us to suffer, we can know
two things: suffering is the same as egocentricity, and
when it arises, that is our best opportunity to end suffering.
As we open to suffering, as we embrace it, as we accept it,
our relationship to it changes. It is no longer horrible,
something to escape from.  Suffering becomes just
another opportunity [for awareness], another chance for
freedom [from egocentricity].

AFTERNOON

March 29 at 2:52 PM

SILENCE, STILLNESS, PEACE
My home is very near a busy road,
But Sitting in its lush garden,
The din and clamor, so close by,
While deemed by some, disruptive,
Is to me a Reminder that Silence,
Has naught to do with sound.
Picture
For hearing the myriad notes of Life,
Whether melodious or dissonant,
Within, my Soul’s attention is elsewhere,
Intoxicated at The Tavern of The Beloved,
Where Enraptured, it cups its ears and asks,
“Hmm, did you say something?”
My mind moves in continuous thought,
But Resting within myself,
The flow of words and images,
While deemed by some, a distraction,
Is to me a Reminder that Stillness,
Has naught to do with movement.
For as thoughts and images flow,
Whether pleasurable or discordant,
Within, my Soul’s attention is elsewhere,
Entranced by the Face of The Beloved,
Where, without turning from Her,
It gestures, “You go on ahead.”

The psyche’s weather roils, ever changing,
But Abiding as the formless Sky,
The inconstancy of calm and catastrophe,
While deemed by some, a hindrance,
Is to me a Reminder that Peace,
Has naught to do with change.
For whether the vicissitudes of emotion,
Bring sunlit joy or darkening sorrow,
Within, my Soul’s attention is elsewhere,
Lost in Reverie of The Changeless One,
Ever Radiant in the Heart of Being,
Timeless, Spaceless, Objectless.
Abandoning silence and clamor,
We become Silence.
Abandoning stillness and motion,
We become Stillness.
Abandoning peace and unrest,
We become Peace.
Abandoning all dualities,
We become our Essence.

Who (be quiet) Are you

Be still
Listen to the stones of the wall.
Be silent, they try
To speak your

Name.
Listen
To the living walls.
Who are you?
Who
Are you? Whose
Silence are you?
Who (be quiet)
Are you (as these stones
Are quiet). Do not
Think of what you are
Still less of

What you may one day be.
Rather
Be what you are (but who?) be
The unthinkable one
You do not know.

O be still, while
You are still alive,
And all things live around you
Speaking (I do not hear)
To your own being,
Speaking by the Unknown
That is in you and in themselves.
“I will try, like them
To be my own silence:
And this is difficult. The whole
World is secretly on fire. The stones
Burn, even the stones
They burn me. How can a man be still or
Listen to all things burning? How can he dare
To sit with them when
All their silence
Is on fire?”

–Thomas Merton

Happiness

1
Even if you have nothing,
 It is hard to find that contentment
Which comes from renunciation.

I accept nothing.
I reject nothing.

And I am happy.

Picture
2

The body trembles,
 The tongue falters,
The mind is weary.
Forsaking them all,
I pursue my purpose happily.
Picture
 3

Knowing I do nothing,
 I do whatever comes my way,
And I am happy.
Picture
  4

 Bound to his body,
 The seeker insists on striving
Or on sitting still.
But I no longer suppose
The body is mine,
Or is not mine.
And I am happy.
Picture
 5

Sleeping, sitting, walking,
 Nothing good or bad befalls me.
I sleep, I sit, I walk,
And I am happy.
Picture
6
Struggling or at rest,
Nothing is won or lost.
I have forsaken the joy of winning
And the sorrow of losing.
And I am happy.
7

 For pleasures come and go.
 How often I have watched their inconstancy!

But I have forsaken good and bad,
And now I am happy.

AFTERNOON
OF MYSELF I AM NOTHING

I am the blank screen
On which universes appear and disappear

I am the nothing-ness
From which ‘All That Is’ seems to BE

And yet I AM
The identities that once seduced me
Have died
And now dance naked before my
Awareness
Unable to entice me to wear their endless costumes

 i AM beyond even the concept of Freedom
Unaware of its meaning
As the world of opposites
Has faded

In this Emptiness
I AM Eternity.

 ~~~ It is being dead to self that is the recognition of God.
 Inayat Khan
 Love accomplishes its work when it spreads its wings
and veils man's self from his own eyes.
That is the time when love is fulfilled,
and so it is in the life of the holy ones
who have not only loved God by professing or showing it,
but who have loved God to the extent
that they forgot themselves.
Under whatever name and form one may worship the Absolute Reality,
it is only a means for realizing It without name and form.
That alone is true realization,
wherein one knows oneself in relation to that Reality,
 attains peace and realizes one’s identity with it.
 Fulfillment
1
First I gave up action,
Then idle words,
And lastly thought itself.
Now I am here.
2
 Ridding my mind of distraction,
single-pointed,
I shut out sound and all the
senses,
And I am here.
3
Meditation is needed
Only when the mind is distracted
By false imagining.
Knowing this,
I am here.
4
 Without joy or sorrow,
 Grasping nothing, spurning nothing,
O Master,
 I am here.
5
What do I care
If I observe or neglect
The four stages of life?
Meditation,
Controlling the mind,
These are mere distractions!
Now I am here.
 6
Doing, or not doing,
 Both come from not knowing.
Knowing this fully,
I am here.
 7
Thinking
  Of what is beyond thinking
Is still thinking.
I gave up thinking,
And I am here.
8
Whoever fulfills this
Fulfills his own nature
And is indeed fulfilled.
AFTERNOON
You are something that the whole universe is doing,
in the same way that a wave is something that the whole ocean is doing.
...
We do not “come into” this world;
we come out of it, as leaves from a tree.
As the ocean “waves,” the universe “peoples.”
Every individual is an expression of the whole realm of nature,
a unique action of the total universe.
This fact is rarely, if ever, experienced by most individuals.
Even those who know it to be true in theory
do not sense or feel it,
but continue to be aware of themselves
 as isolated “egos”
inside bags of skin.
You didn’t come into this world.
You came out of it, like a wave from the ocean.
You are not a stranger here.
Stillness
1
 All things arise,
Suffer change,
And pass away.
This is their nature.
When you know this,
Nothing perturbs you,
Nothing hurts you.
You become still.
It is easy.
There is only God.
Desire melts away.
Clinging to nothing,
You become still.
Fortune or misfortune
May befall you.
When you know this,
You desire nothing,
You grieve for nothing.
Subduing the senses,
 You are happy.
Picture
4
Whatever you do
Brings joy or sorrow,
Life or death.
When you know this,
You may act freely,
Without attachment.
For what is there to accomplish?
 5
All sorrow comes from fear.
From nothing else.
When you know this,
You become free of it,
And desire melts away.
You become happy
 And still.
Picture
6
 "I am not the body,
Nor is the body mine.
I am awareness itself."
When you know this,
You have no thought
For what you have done
Or left undone.
You become one,
Perfect and indivisible.
7
"I am in all things,
 From Brahma to a blade of grass."
When you know this,
You have no thought
For success or failure
Or the mind's inconstancy.
You are pure.
 You are still.
 8
The world with all its wonders
 Is nothing.
When you know this,
Desire melts away.
For you are awareness itself.
AFTERNOON
Friday, April 5, 2019
Life is transmitted and perpetuated by the sexual organs.
You must study the science and wisdom
that goes into creating these organs,
and respect them.
However, they are often the organs which are the least respected:
puritans consider them with disgust,
the debauched abuse them,
comedians and rude people joke about them,
and most men and women see them simply
as a source of enjoyment.
Initiatic Science tells us that the energy
that manifests through the genitals descends from the heavenly regions.
And because this energy descends from the heavenly regions,
humans would do well to think about
how they use their organs that enable this energy to manifest.
They should even dedicate them to the Divine,
so that, instead of allowing this energy to simply
pass through them and go to waste,
this cosmic energy of love
may rise up and vivify all the cells in their body,
including their brain.
  If they are content with feeling this energy
like a great tension which they are eager to release,
they deprive themselves of all the joy love could bring them,
 and of all the knowledge and power too.
Because it is death-like when the body loses boundaries,
when the body becomes like a vaporous thing,
when the body evaporates substantially
and only energy is left,
a very subtle rhythm,
but you find yourself as if you are not.
Only in deep love can one move into it.
Love is like death:  you die as far as your material image is concerned,
you die as far as you think you are a body,
you die as a body and you evolve as energy,
vital energy.
Desire
1
Striving and craving,
For pleasure or prosperity,
These are your enemies,
Springing up to destroy you
From the presumptions of virtue.
Let them all go.
Hold on to nothing.
2
Every good fortune,
Wives, friends, houses, lands,
All these gifts and riches. . .
They are a dream,
A juggling act,
A traveling show!
A few days, and they are gone.
3
Consider.
 Wherever there is desire,
There is the world.
With resolute dispassion
Free yourself from desire,
And find happiness.
4
Desire binds you,
Nothing else.
Destroy it, and you are free.
Turn from the world.
Fulfill yourself,
And find lasting happiness.
5
You are one.
 You are pure awareness.
The world is not real.
It is cold and lifeless.
Nor is ignorance real.
So what can you wish to know?
6
Life after life you indulged  In different forms,
Different pleasures,
Sons and kingdoms and wives.
Only to lose them all. . .
Enough of the pursuit of pleasure,
 Enough of wealth and righteous deeds!
 In the dark forest of the world
What peace of mind can they bring you?
How you have toiled,
How you have toiled,
 Life after life,
Pressing into painful labor
Your body and your mind and your words.
It is time to stop.
Dispassion
1
Seeing to this,
Neglecting that,
Setting one thing against another. . .
 Who is free of such cares?
When will they ever end?
Consider.
Without passion,
With dispassion,
Let go.
2
My child,
Rare is he, and blessed,
Who observes the ways of men
And gives up the desire
For pleasure and knowledge,
For life itself.
3
Nothing lasts.
Nothing is real.
It is all suffering,
Threefold affliction!
It is all beneath contempt.
Know this.
Give it up.
Be still.
4
When will men ever stop
Setting one thing against another?
Let go of all contraries.
Whatever comes, be happy
And so fulfill yourself.
5
Masters, saints, seekers:
They all say different things.
Whoever knows this,
With dispassion becomes quiet.
6
The true master considers well.
With dispassion
He sees all things are the same.
He comes to understand
The nature of things,
The essence of awareness.
He will not be born again.
7
In the shifting elements
See only their pure form.
Rest in your own nature.
Set yourself free.
8
The world is just a set of false impressions.
Give them up.
Give up the illusion.
Give up the world.
And live freely.
AFTERNOON
The sage is indifferent.
He does not hanker after more pleasure,
 nor does he refuse whatever may come to him by way of experience.
 There is no volition, either positive or negative,
 because there is no separate entity to choose,
 want or strive for anything.
Man, unaware of the seamless unity of all things,
pulls in one direction and in turn finds himself
pulled helplessly in the opposite direction.
He considers himself superior to his environment
 and yet is ignorant even of the origin of his own thoughts.
 He does not truly know whether any action of his
 is really of his own volition or predetermined.
He thinks he can shape his own destiny
 and yet is piteously anxious about his future.
He does not realize that his confusion lies within,
 in the knotted, convoluted tangle  of his own conceptualization,
 and not in outside conditions.
The mind desires this,
And spurns another.
Now it feels anger,
Now happiness.
In this way you are bound.
AFTERNOON
There is a grace approaching
that we shun as much as death,
it is the completion of our birth.
It does not come in time,
       but in timelessness
when the mind sinks into the heart
and we remember.
It is insistent grace that draws us
to the edge and beckons us surrender
safe territory and enter our enormity.
We know we must pass
       beyond knowing
and fear the shedding.
But we are pulled upward
       none-the-less
through forgotten ghosts
       and unexpected angels,
luminous.
And there is nothing left to say
but we are That.
And that is what we sing about.
And there is nothing left to say
but we are This.
And this is what we sing about.
When the path ignites a soul,
there's no remaining in place.
The foot touches ground,
but not for long.
The way where love tells its secret
stays always in motion,
and there is no you there, and no reason.
The rider urges his horse to gallop,
and so doing, throws himself
under the flying hooves.
In love-unity there's no old or new.
Everything is nothing.
God alone is.
For lovers the phenomena-veil is very transparent,
and the delicate tracings on it cannot
be explained with language.
Clouds burn off as the sun rises,
and the love-world floods with light.
But cloud-water can be obscuring,
as well as useful.
There is an affection that covers the glory,
rather than dissolving into it.
It's a subtle difference,
like the change in Persian
from the word "friendship"
to the word "work."
That happens with just a dot
above or below the third letter.
There is a seeing of the beauty
of union that doesn't actively work
for the inner conversation.
Your hand and feet must move,
as a stream streams, working
as its Self, to get to the ocean.
Then there's no more mention
of the search.
Being famous, or being a disgrace,
who's ahead or behind, these considerations
are rocks and clogged places
that slow you.
 Be as naked as a wheat grain
out of its husk and sleek as Adam.
Don't ask for anything other
than the presence.
Don't speak of a "you"
apart from That.
A full container cannot be more full.
Be whole, and nothing.
—Hakim Sanai (1044? - 1150?)
