This Silence is what we are, what life is,

We become aware of a
deeper dimension of our Being that is very quiet,
very still, completely open, very natural...

Psychologically minded folks
may wonder if soaking in Silence
is a way of bypassing what needs to be
seen or felt or understood.

In the true Silence of
our awake nature,
nothing is avoided,
nothing denied,
nothing attached.

Rather than numbing us to experience,
this Silence lovingly invites everything
that has been
hidden or denied to come out of the shadows
into the light.

True Silence opens us
to the truth of
the present moment.

One does not have to effort
to find this Silence and Stillness.

It is not something we create.
It is felt the moment we
relax and become receptive,
the moment we stop trying
to move toward or away
from anything.

and what I see is an aberration
caused by old age, an affliction.

I tell you it has taken me all my life
to arrive at the vision of gas lamps as angels,
to soften and blur and finally banish
the edges you regret I don't see,
to learn that the line I called the horizon
does not exist and sky and water,
so long apart, are the same state of being.

Fifty-four years before I could see
Rouen cathedral is built
of parallel shafts of sun,
and now you want to restore
my youthful errors: fixed
notions of top and bottom,
the illusion of three-dimensional space,

The solitary life, being silent, clears away the smoke-screen of words
that man has laid down between his mind and things.

In solitude we remain face to face with the naked being of things.

And yet we find that the nakedness of reality which we have feared,
is neither a matter of terror nor for shame.

It is clothed in the friendly communion of silence,
and this silence is related to love.

The world our words have attempted to classify, to control and even
to despise (because they could not contain it) comes close to us,

I believe that our distant nomadic ancestors came forward and survived
because they could hear distant, faint birdsong
as an acoustic navigational beacon, if you will,
and by moving toward the birdsong,
they were able to find places with shelter, food, and water,
and a prosperous growing region.

of habitats prosperous to humans.

Sometimes I’m swimming against currents that are so strong,
that even my best attempts are going to result in backward motion.
Last month, when I swam across the Chesapeake Bay,
at times there were cross currents and headwinds that made it feel
as though you were swimming in a washing machine.

However, every time I did that I swallowed
a gush of diesel-tasting water and hurt my shoulder.
I made better progress when I kept my head in the water,
forgot about where I was going or how far to land,
and just focused on one stroke after another.

The observer is empty.

A deep sadness arose within him.

"If you are lost, then where are you?"

HOLY FIRE
For that forty minutes last night
I was as purely sensitive and mute as a photographic plate;
I received impressions, but I did not print out captions.
My own self-awareness had disappeared;
it seems now almost as though, had I been wired to electrodes,
my EEG would have been flat.

I have done this sort of thing so often
that I have lost self-consciousness
about moving slowly and halting suddenly.
And I have often noticed that even a few minutes
of this self-forgetfulness is tremendously invigorating.

I wonder if we do not waste most of our energy
just by spending every waking minute
saying hello to ourselves.

Martin Buber quotes an old Hasid master who said,
“When you walk across the field
with your mind pure and holy,
then from all the stones, and all growing things,
and all animals, the sparks of their souls
come out and cling to you,
and then they are purified
and become a holy fire in you."
