Chapter 6

1

I am boundless space.
The world is a clay pot.

This is the truth.

There is nothing to accept,
Nothing to reject,
Nothing to dissolve.
Picture
2
I am the ocean.
All the worlds are like waves.

This is the truth.

Nothing to hold on to,
Nothing to let go of,
Nothing to dissolve.
3
I am the mother-of-pearl.
The world is a vein of silver,
An illusion!

This is the truth.

Nothing to grasp,
Nothing to spurn,
Nothing to dissolve.

4
I am in all beings.
 All beings are in me.

This is the whole truth.

Nothing to embrace,
Nothing to relinquish,
Nothing to dissolve.

In the morning we go to contemplate the sun rising.
In doing so, we eat it and drink it,
and its living light and warmth spread to all the cells in our body enlightening them, strengthening them, purifying them and vivifying them.

Every day, you are before the sun which projects particles of light into space.
By looking at it, imagine that you free yourselves of your body's impurities
to replace them with the particles of light the sun sends you.
With all your heart, with all your soul,
take these divine particles and place them within you.
And so, little by little, thanks to the sun,
you will impregnate the matter

of your being with spiritual vibrations
and become more and more alive.

Let your heart be like the sky,
that transparent, that close.
Touch everything.  Be so quiet
against each leaf, each face.
Where lovers move, be there.
Where bullets strike, be there.
Around each voice, be that air.
Now you know how God feels.

AFTERNOON
Journey Out of Time -
Ram Dass, Rupert Spira, Elias Amidon

Time is a box formed by thoughts of the past and future.
When you're not dwelling in the past or anticipating the future,
but are just here - you're outside of time.
Dwelling in the moment is dwelling in Eternal Presence.
From within here... you are not being in time.
You [just] Be, and time goes by, as if you were
standing on a bridge, watching it all go by.
Picture
Ours is a journey toward simplicity, toward quietness,
toward a kind of joy that is not in time.
In this journey out of time,
we are leaving behind every model we have had
of who we thought we were.

This journey involves a transformation of our being.
It's a journey that takes us from primary identification with our
psyche to identification with our souls, then to identification
with God, and ultimately beyond any identification at all.
Life is an incredible curriculum in which we live richly and
passionately as a way of awakening to the deepest truths of
our being.  As soul, I live in the moment, in each rich and
precious moment, and I am filled with contentment.

Ram Dass
from Polishing the Mirror:
How to Live from Your Spiritual Heart
The Eternal Now,
when seen through the mind,
appears as time.
The Now is our Self.
We are not present in the Now.
We are the Now.
The Now is not a container that contains our Self
along with everything else.
It is our Self, Eternal Presence...

Rupert Spira
You cannot "shop" for truth.
Truth cannot be seen.
What is necessary is a different seeing,
whole seeing,
seeing from within,
from the Source of all seeing.
*****
No one is born and no one dies.
  This dream-world of phenomena
is merely something to be witnessed in passing.

Dissolving
Chapter 5

1
 You are pure.
Nothing touches you.
What is there to renounce?
Let it all go,
The body and the mind.
Let yourself dissolve.

2
Like bubbles in the sea,
All the worlds arise in you.
Know you are the Self.
Know you are one.
Let yourself dissolve.
3
You see the world.
But like the snake in the rope,
It is not really there.
You are pure.
Let yourself dissolve.
Picture
4
You are one and the same
In joy and sorrow,
Hope and despair,
Life and death.

You are already fulfilled.

Let yourself dissolve.

AFTERNOON
There is a Living Silence that hears the cry of the Soul.
Picture
Abandon surface impressions and patterns.
Abandon what has become comfortable,
and embrace a sacred depth of being
that asks us to enter that which is wholly unknown
and that which fosters genuine metanoia.

Picture
This Holy Silence creates an inner clearing
that makes room for new life,
including
living, breathing Silence.
In this dimension
where time has become space,
life is enlivened.
Picture
We are fortunate to have night's solace.
In the silence that is created by the dark of night...
....that melancholy time,
when the stars remind us of the Silence of "God" -
here we can lean into the unknown,
setting aside life's demands and tasks,
and the oppressive weight
of our carefully constructed version
of who we think we are.
We can remember
how to see in the dark...
with our ears... perceiving the Silence
in its holy echoing and resonance,
its calling forth a knowing
that is from the Soul.
The Silence sends us on a different pilgrimage.
It guards the heart's fire and teaches us
to speak from within with a language
that is imbued with the Sacred.
Words thus nurtured in this Holy Silence
fly forth to lead us back
to the Silence from which we were born...
Picture
As we enter the mystery of Silence,
its presence resonates throughout the fibers of our flesh
to the soul inwardly and to the cosmos outwardly.
The inward silence of solitude
meets up with the Great Silence of Cosmic Wisdom.
When we do not cultivate this,
we lose access to the presence of the Silence.
Without silence we are lost
and cannot get still enough
to find
our way back.
Picture
Silence bears the wholeness we keep looking for
while we do not know exactly what we are looking for.
It is around us and within us.
It goes to the deepest depths of the Soul
and to the outermost reaches of the cosmos
and continuously unites the two
at the centering place of our Heart.
Here everything comes alive again
as if for the first time.
We may be shocked to notice
we had not even realized we had lost ourselves.
And feel a new attunement to Spirit as a directly felt reality.
The Silence is palpable.
Picture
In Silence everything displays its depth.
We are part of the depth of everything around us.
  We see that separation between
ourselves and the world is an illusion.
We and the world
each  mirror the other
within the depths of the Soul.
Picture
Silence is not merely the void
from which things spring up,
it is a living presence.
The deeper we enter into Silence
the more we become aware
that this living presence is primary.

Rumi - Silence is the guide

The story admits of being told up to this point,
But what follows is hidden, and inexpressible in words.
If you should speak and try a hundred ways to express it,
'Tis useless; the mystery becomes no clearer,
You can ride on saddle and horse to the sea-coast,
But then you must use a horse of wood (i.e. a boat).
A horse of wood is useless on dry land,
It is the special vehicle of voyagers by sea.
Silence is this horse of wood,
Silence is the guide and support of men at sea.

Chapter 4
The True Seeker

1
The wise man knows the Self,
And he plays the game of life.
But the fool lives in the world
Like a beast of burden.

Picture
2
The true seeker feels no elation
 Even in that exalted state
Which Indra and all the gods
Unhappily long for.
3
He understands the nature of things.
His heart is not smudged
By right or wrong,
As the sky is not smudged by smoke.
4
He is pure of heart,
He knows the whole world is only the Self.
So who can stop him
From doing as he wishes?

5
Of the four kinds of being,
From Brahma to a blade of grass,
Only the wise man is strong enough
To give up desire and aversion.
6
How rare he is!
Knowing he is the Self,
He acts accordingly
And is never fearful.
For he knows he is the Self,
One without two,
The Lord of all creation.

AFTERNOON
Rhythm of Sadness...

A deep rhythm of sadness
arises from within...
unexpectedly,
spontaneously,
inexplicably.
Picture
It rises even though
I "know"
that before thought and feeling
"I" am Eternal Beingness.
It will not be held back
by the sand bags of knowledge,
from the caverns of the mind...
It matters not to
"The Eternal"
that sadness and grief
arise in the mechanism called
"me",
like the tides of the ocean,
rising and falling
in a darkened harbor;
felt not seen...
It is all just held in Its Awareness...
Sadness
is of no consequence
to "The Eternal..."
It just is - sadness
rising and falling,
breathing
through

me
I follow the rhythm of sadness
as it rises through the gut
into the Heart
where it meets
The Rhythm
of

"The Eternal"
and
dissolves
~
~
~

into
rivulets
of energy;
just energy,
decreasing in
intensity.
Only to rise again
another day, or
on the next tide...

Mystic Meandering

Picture
Sadness is not something you need to fix,
cure, or transform.  It need not be healed but held.
You need not shift sadness into some "higher" state or
apply teachings so that it will yield into something else.
For it is complete and pure on its own.
Picture
With the fire of awareness and the ally of your breath,
touch your heart...
Go on a journey into the core of the feeling, the sensation,
images and the raw, shaky life that is longing to be held.
And listen.
It is by way of this journey that sadness will be revealed to
be what it is, a bridge into the the universal heart, a messenger
of power, mercy, and fierce compassion...

The world's spiritual geniuses seem to discover universally
that the mind's muddy river,
this ceaseless flow of trivia and trash,
cannot be dammed,
and that trying to dam it is a waste of effort
that might lead to madness.
Instead you must allow the muddy river
to flow unheeded in the dim channels of consciousness;
you raise your sights;
you look along it, mildly,
acknowledging its presence without interest
and gazing beyond it into the realm of the real
where subjects and objects act and rest purely, without utterance.

Wisdom

1
You know the Self,
By nature one
Without end.
You know the Self,
And you are serene.
How can you still desire riches?
2
When from ignorance
You see silver in mother-of-pearl,
Greed arises.
From ignorance of the Self
Desire arises
For the world where the senses whirl.
3
Knowing yourself as
That In which the worlds rise and fall
Like waves in the ocean,
Why do you run about so wretchedly?
4
For have you not heard?
You are pure awareness,
And your beauty is infinite!
So why let lust mislead you?
5
The man who is wise
Knows himself in all things
And all things in himself.
Yet how strange!
He still says,
"This is mine."
6
Determined to be free,
He abides in the oneness
Beyond all things.
Yet how strange!
Indulging in passion, he weakens,
And lust overwhelms him.
7
Feeble with age,
Still he is filled with desire,
When without doubt he knows
That lust is the enemy of awareness.
Indeed how strange!
8
He longs to be free . . .
He has no care for this world
Or the next,
And he knows what is passing
Or forever.
And yet how strange!
He is still afraid of freedom.
9
But he who is truly wise
Always sees the absolute Self.
 Celebrated, he is not delighted.
Spurned, he is not angry.
10
Pure of heart,
He watches his own actions
As if they were another's.
How can praise or blame disturb him?
11
With clear and steady insight
He sees this world is a mirage,
And he no longer wonders about it.
How can he fear the approach of death?
Picture
12
Pure of heart,
He desires nothing,
Even in despair.
He is content In the knowledge of the Self.
With whom may I compare him?
Picture
13
With clear and steady insight
He knows that whatever he sees
Is by its very nature nothing.
How can he prefer one thing to another?
14
He is beyond all duality,
Free from desire,
He has driven from his mind
All longing for the world.
Come what may,
Joy or sorrow,
Nothing moves him.

the over-soul, excerpts

... So come I to live in thoughts, and act with
energies, which are immortal.
Thus revering the soul, and learning, as the ancient said,
that "its beauty is immense," man will come to see that the world is the perennial miracle which the soul worketh,
and be less astonished at particular wonders;
he will learn that there is no profane history;
that all history is sacred;
that the universe is represented in an atom,
in a moment of time.
Picture
He will weave no longer a spotted life of shreds and patches,
but he will live with a divine unity.
He will cease from what is base and frivolous in his life,
and be content with all places and with any service he can render.
He will calmly front the morrow in the negligency
of that trust which carries God with it,
and so
hath already the whole future in the bottom of the heart.

Chapter 2:
Awareness

1
Yesterday
I lived bewildered,
In illusion.
Picture
But now I am awake,
Flawless and serene,
Beyond the world.
Picture
2
From my light
The body and the world arise.
So all things are mine,
Or nothing is.
Picture
3
Now I have given up
The body and the world,
I have a special gift.
I see the infinite Self.

Picture
4
As a wave,
Seething and foaming,
Is only water
So all creation,
Streaming out of the Self,
Is only the Self.
Picture
5
Consider a piece of cloth,
It is only threads!
So all creation,
When you look closely,
Is only the Self.
Picture
6
Like the sugar
In the juice of the sugarcane,
I am the sweetness
In everything I have made.

Picture
7
When the Self is unknown
The world arises,
Not when it is known.
But you mistake
The rope for the snake.
When you see the rope,
The snake vanishes.
Picture
8
My nature is light,
Nothing but light.
 When the world arises
I alone am shining.
Picture
9
When the world arises in me,
It is just an illusion:
Water shimmering in the sun,
A vein of silver in mother-of-pearl,
A serpent in a strand of rope.
Picture
10
From me the world streams out
And in me it dissolves,
As a bracelet melts into gold,
A pot crumbles into clay,
A wave subsides into water.
Picture
11
 I adore myself.
How wonderful I am!
I can never die.
Picture
The whole world may perish,
From Brahma to a blade of grass,
But I am still here.
Picture

AFTERNOON
Picture
12
Indeed how wonderful!
I adore myself.
For I have taken form
But I am still one.
Neither coming or going,
Yet I am still everywhere.
13
How wonderful,
And how great my powers!
For I am without form,
Yet till the end of time
I uphold the universe.
14
 Wonderful!
For nothing is mine,
Yet it is all mine,
Whatever is thought or spoken.
15
 I am not the knower,
  Nor the known,
Nor the knowing.
 These three are not real.
They only seem to be
When I am not known.
For I am flawl
16
Two from one!
This is the root of suffering.
Only perceive
That I am one without two,
Pure awareness, pure joy,
And all the world is false.
There is no other remedy!
17
Through ignorance
I once imagined I was bound.
But I am pure awareness.
I live beyond all distinctions,
In unbroken meditation.
18
Indeed,
I am neither bound nor free.
An end to illusion!
It is all groundless.
For the whole of creation,
Though it rests in me,
Is without foundation.
19
The body is nothing.
The world is nothing.
When you understand this fully,
How can they be invented?
For the Self is pure awareness,
Nothing less.
20
The body is false,
And so are its fears,
Heaven and hell, freedom and bondage.
It is all invention.
What can they matter to me?
I am awareness itself.

21
I see only one.
 Many men,
One wilderness.
Then to what may I cling?
Picture
22
I am not the body.
 Nor is the body mine.
I am not separate.
I am awareness itself,
Bound only by my thirst for life.
Picture
23
I am the infinite ocean.
When thoughts spring up,
The wind freshens, and like waves
A thousand worlds arise.
Picture
24
But when the wind falls,
The trader sinks with his ship.
On the boundless ocean of my being
He founders,
And all the worlds with him.

Picture
25
But O how wonderful!
I am the unbounded deep In whom all living things
Naturally arise,
Rush against each other playfully,
And then subside.

Picture
The Self
1
O Master,
Tell me how to find Detachment, wisdom, and freedom!

2
Child, If you wish to be free,
Shun the poison of the senses.
Seek the nectar of truth,
Of love and forgiveness,
Simplicity and happiness.
Picture
3
Earth, fire and water,
The wind and the sky -
You are none of these.
If you wish to be free,
Know you are the Self,
The witness of all these,
The heart of awareness.
4
Set your body aside,
Sit in your own awareness.
You will at once be happy,
Forever still,
Forever free.

5
You have no caste,
No duties bind you.
Formless and free,
Beyond the reach of the senses,
The witness of all things.
So be happy!

Picture
6
Right or wrong,
Joy and sorrow,
These are of the mind only.
They are not yours.
It is not really you Who acts or enjoys.
You are everywhere,
Forever free.
7
Forever and truly free,
The single witness of all things.
But if you see yourself as separate,
Then you are bound.
Picture
8
"I do this. I do that,
The big black snake of selfishness
Has bitten you!
"I do nothing."
This is the nectar of faith,
 So drink and be happy!
Picture

AFTERNOON
Picture
9
Know you are one,
Pure awareness.
With the fire of this conviction,
Burn down the forest of ignorance.
Free yourself from sorrow,
And be happy.
Picture
10
Be happy!
For you are joy, unbounded joy.
You are awareness itself.
Just as a coil of rope
Is mistaken for a snake,
So you are mistaken for the world.
Picture
11
If you think you are free,
You are free.
If you think you are bound,
You are bound.
For the saying is true:
You are what you think.
[On this see Dhammapada 1:1-4.]
Picture
12
The Self looks like the world,
But this is just an illusion.
The Self is everywhere.
One.
Still.
Free.
Perfect.
The witness of all things,
Awareness
 Without action, clinging or desire.
Picture
13
Meditate on the Self.
One without two,
Exalted awareness.
Give up the illusion
Of the separate self.
Give up the feeling,
Within or without,
That you are this or that.
Picture
14
My child,
Because you think you are the body,
For a long time you have been bound.
Know you are pure awareness.
With this knowledge as your sword
Cut through your chains.
 And be happy!
Picture
15
For you are already free,
Without action or flaw,
Luminous and brig
ht.
You are bound
Only by the habit of meditation.
16
Your nature is pure awareness,

You are flowing in all things,
And all things are flowing in you.
But beware
The narrowness of the mind!
17
You are always the same,
Unfathomable awareness,
Limitless and free,
Serene and unperturbed.
Desire only your own awareness.

18
Whatever takes form is false.
Only the formless endures.
When you understand
The truth of this teaching,
You will not be born again.
Picture
19
For God is infinite,
Within the body and without,
Like a mirror,
And the image in a mirror.
20
As the air is everywhere,
Flowing around a pot
And filling it,
So God is everywhere,
Filling all things
And flowing through them forever.

AFTERNOON

Fellow travelers of interior wealth, richness, and meaning
Matt Licata

While the desire for transformation is natural, noble, and honorable,
if we are not careful it can serve as a powerful reminder
and expression of the painful realities of materialism and self-abandonment.
One of the shadow sides of seeking
and the (seemingly) endless project of self-improvement
is that we never slow down enough to digest what we have already been given,
which is often much more than we consciously realize.
Which, in some sense, is everything.
Not the “everything” the mind thinks it needs to be happy and fulfilled,
found by way of a journey of internal and external consumerism.
Not the “everything” that conforms to our fantasies of power, control,
“mastery,” and safe from the possibility that our heart can break
and our world can reorganize anew in any moment.
But the “everything” that is already here as part of our true nature,
the raw materials for a life of purpose and meaning,
revealed by way of slowness and humility,
not unconscious acquisition.

In Tibetan tradition,
there is an image of the hungry ghost,
a figure of the imaginal realms with a large distended belly and tiny mouth.
No matter how much food (experience) is consumed,
there is a deep ache and longing for more.
Regardless of how much is taken in there remains an insatiable hunger.
Because this one is not able to make use of or enjoy what is given,
a primordial hole is left behind which can never seem to be filled.
The invitation as this one appears is to slow way down
and to send breath, awareness, and warmth directly into the hole,
infusing it with curiosity and presence,
and tend to what is already here,
not what is missing and may come by way of further procurement.
To listen to the heartbeat within,
the heartbeat of the earth,
the heartbeat of the stars.
To attune to the drum of the holy reverberating
within a nervous system and body that is open, ripe, and sacred.
The willingness to fully digest our own vulnerability, tenderness,
confusion, suffering, and joy
is an act of love and fierce, revolutionary kindness.
There are soul-nutrients
buried in the food of our embodied experience
that yearn to be integrated, metabolized, and assimilated
in the flame of the heart.
But this digestion requires the enzymes
of presence, embodiment, and compassion,
and a curiosity about what is here now.
May we all slow down and become mindful
of the ways we seek to fill the empty hole in the center,
whether it be with food when we’re not hungry
or experience when we are already full.
And in this way we can walk lightly
together in this world, on this precious planet,
not as hungry ghosts desperate to be fed, but as
fellow travelers of interior wealth,
richness,
and meaning.

The most powerful prayer,
one well nigh omnipotent,
and the worthiest work of all
is the outcome of a quiet mind.
The quieter it is
the more powerful,
the worthier, the deeper,
the more telling and more perfect the prayer is.
To the quiet mind all things are possible.
What is a quiet mind?
A quiet mind is one
which nothing weighs on,
nothing worries,
which,
free from ties and from all self-seeking,
is wholly merged into the will of God
and dead to its own.

AFTERNOON
Picture
Commentary by Hazrat Inayat Khan:
A soul shows the proof of its evolution in the degree of the tolerance it shows.
The life in the lower creation shows the lack of tolerance.
The tendency of fighting with one another, which one sees among beasts and birds, shows the reason at the back of it, that intolerance is born in their nature.
... But when a soul has evolved still more, tolerance becomes the natural thing for him. Because the highly evolved soul then begins to realize
'Another person is not separate from me, but the other person is myself.
The separation is on the surface of life,
but in the depth of life I and the other person are one.'
Therefore tolerance is not learned fully by trying to follow it as a good principle.
It is learned by having the love of God,
by attaining the knowledge of self,
and by understanding the truth of life.

   from  https://wahiduddin.net/mv2/XIII/XIII_21.htm
A Sufi tries to keep harmony in his surroundings,
the harmony which demands many sacrifices.
It makes one endure what one is not willing to endure,
it makes one overlook what one is not inclined to overlook,
it makes one tolerate what one is not accustomed to tolerate,
and it makes one forgive and forget
what one would never have forgotten if it were not for the sake of harmony.
But at whatever cost harmony is attained, it is a good bargain.
For harmony is the secret of happiness,
and in absence of this a person living in palaces and rolling in gold
 can be most unhappy.

   from  https://wahiduddin.net/mv2/XIII/XIII_17.htm
The first step to the attainment of the truth cannot be taught in books,
or be imparted by a teacher.
It must come spontaneously,
namely through the love for truth.
The next step is to search for it; the third step is the actual attainment.
How can one attain?
In order to attain truth one must make one's own life truthful.
... Passing from the state of natural man,
through the state of being a lover of truth and a seeker after truth,
one begins to express truth
... One begins to understand what the great teachers have taught.
Then one becomes tolerant to the various religions.

 Nothing seems strange any more.
Nothing surprises.
For now one begins to know the innermost nature of man;
one sees the cause behind every action.
Therefore tolerance and forgiveness and understanding of others come naturally.
The person who knows the truth is the most tolerant.
It is the knower of truth who is forgiving;
it is the knower of truth who understands another person's point of view.
It is the knower of truth who does not readily voice his opinion,
for he has respect for the opinions of others.
When man gains insight into himself,
he also gains insight into the hearts of others.
All this desire for learning occult or mystical powers or psychic powers now disappears, because he begins to see all this power in one truth
-- loving truth,
seeking truth,
looking for truth,
living the truthful life.
That it is which opens all doors.

   ~~~ "Supplementary Papers, Philosophy V", by Hazrat Inayat Khan (unpublished)
   ~~~ The first sign of the realization of truth is tolerance.

GODSEED: The Alehemy of Primordial Memory

Love your true Self,
Which is naturally happy
And peaceful and bright!

Awaken to you own nature,
And all delusion melts like a dream
The sorrows of duty,
Like the heat of the sun,
Have scorched your heart.

But let stillness fall on you
With its sweet and cooling showers,
And you will find happiness.

A prayer comes from the heart,
and points to something that is beyond words and meaning.
Its only function is to throw you back to yourself,
to silence.

In prayer,

as  leaves move, free-floating in the breeze
all hidden controls thrown away like muslin in the wind
Picture

we find we are our own best friend, lover and beloved.

Let every idea we have of ourselves be given a quiet burial.

I will not hear my mother's voice again...

I will not hear my mother's voice again - or see the recognition
in her eyes when she was surprised to see me at her bedside;
or see her lift her head up from the pillow, her index finger
pointed into the air, as I was on my way out her bedroom door,
saying "I love you" - as if to remind me for the last time.
And my reply: "I love you too!" - pausing to look back...

Picture
I will not "know" my mother anymore - in form - although her
Spirit Essence lives on somewhere now; a comforting feeling,
no matter what one's beliefs are about what happens after death.

Picture
That's the thing I learned through my mother's 3 month "death
experience" - only Love remains - not your spiritual beliefs, or
ideologies, or philosophies about life; your pain or childhood
wounds.  Only Love...  All the left-over parent/child issues
dissolved as I watched her lay vulnerable and weak, speaking in
whispers as her body declined; eventually unable to speak, or
eat, or drink...  Only compassion and sorrow arose as her body
struggled to let go of, or hang on to, life - and she became fearful.
It was not an easy death the last few days.  It became more like
hard labor, giving birth to something unseen...
Picture
In the weeks before her passing, as she deteriorated, she saw
things in the invisible world: elves outside her window in the
trees, and people from the spirit world she did not know standing
near her bed.  And what she called a "beautiful woman" whom
she said had come to "help her on her journey."  I surely hope so...
Picture
There were no "religious" or "spiritual" overtones to any of it.
No talk of "God", which surprised me from what I knew of my
mother; a sometimes very pious Christian.  There was only this
idea of a playful fantasy of going on a "journey" with "spirit
people" to help her.  Maybe life isn't as serious as we think,
maybe life is a playful journey.
Picture
Mom, you are safe now.
May you feel the Love on the other side of the veil...
For there is only Love and Grace at the end of the "journey."
I love you again and again - we all do...

AFTERNOON
Adyashanti on "Enlightenment"
Enlightenment is a destructive process.
It has nothing to do with becoming better or being happier.
Enlightenment is the crumbling away of untruth.
It's seeing through the facade or pretense.
It's the complete eradication
of everything we imagined to be true.

~*~
All that is necessary to awaken to yourself as the radiant
emptiness of spirit is to stop seeking something more or better
or different, and turn your attention inward to the awake silence
that you are.
~*~
We realize - often quite suddenly - that our sense of self,
which has been formed and constructed
out of our ideas, beliefs, and images,
is not really who we are.
 It doesn't define us...
~*~

Picture
When you get out of the driver's seat,
you find that life can drive itself,
that actually life has always been driving itself.
When you get out of the driver's seat,
it can flow in ways you never imagined.
Life becomes almost magical.
The illusion of the "me" is no longer
in the way.
Life begins to flow,
and you never know where it will
take you.
~*~

One of my favorite definitions of enlightenment comes from a
Jesuit priest named Anthony de Mello...
Someone asked him to define his experience of enlightenment.
He said,
"Enlightenment is absolute cooperation with the inevitable."
 Enlightenment is when
everything within us is in cooperation
with the flow of life itself,
 with the inevitable.

All quotes below in this font from
The Lost Writings of Wu Hsin
To live with anxiety,
That thought moving between
Now and what-if, is
To live life unnaturally.
The natural life is
A life full consciousness in
The absence of thought.
There is no inherent need to think.
The need to think serves only to
Perpetuate the notion of a thinker.
These so-called searches are so barren.
It is like using a lit candle to
Seek out fire.
When what one is
Is clearly discerned,
The need for searching is extinguished.

The Silence of which
Wu Hsin speaks is beyond
The presence or absence of thought.
It is prior to both and
It is their foundation.
When one perceives
What is not silent,
The perception is from this Silence.

This fear of death is really
The fear of becoming nothing.
Here, Wu Hsin asks:
What if you are already nothing?
To depart from this vast nothing
In order to be
A small something is
The folly of the individual.

Fear does not exist as soon as the glow of awareness
moves beyond a certain threshold
inside man's cocoon.

 Don Juan
http://www.whale.to/m/fear1.html
A calm mind does not mean you are Free … Aware of Who You Really Are.
The collective mind of humanity ‘is’ the cause
behind the ‘appearance’ of the universal dream.
It has temporarily ‘replaced’ the God-SELF [your Real identity]
and projects never-ending manifestations
through the illusion of time-space
emanating from its belief in separation.
Mind, in its true place, is the servant of the Heart or God-SELF.
Thinking with the mind always functions at various level of chaos
… some appearing relatively calm.
Nevertheless, separation still persists
… calmness does NOT dissolve this primary belief.
The Heart is the open conduit through which Truth enters,
unfettered by the conditioning of the body-mind-identity.

IT is the un-Knowing state ‘devoid’ of the bottomless archives of ideas,
concepts, beliefs and the history of the mind
that endlessly replicates more and more of the same discord.
Using the mind to solve the minds dysfunctional manifestations
is using a problem to solve a problem.
The mind in the separated individual person
is not Real and ‘cannot be fixed’.
Emptiness,
the result of total surrender to the Unknown,

I am part of the sun as my eye is part of me.

That I am part of the earth my feet know perfectly,
and my blood is part of the sea.

There is not any part of me that is alone and absolute except my mind,

it is only the glitter of the sun on the surfaces of the water.

The terrorism of the self-referential way is over.
Picture
Suddenly, there isn't any difference between
Eternity and right now.

The silence preceding the words is
The same silence after they are spoken.
These are the offspring of the Unchanging.

When we have decided the exact gifts we wish to share,
our consciousness becomes more rooted in receiving the gifts we offer,
instead of taking on the emotional density
our energy field heals in others.

A thousand times I have ascertained and found it to be true:
the affairs of this world are really nothing into nothing.
Still though, we should dance.

not to worry
Know all things to be like this:
A mirage, a cloud castle,
A dream, an apparition,
Without essence, but with qualities that can be seen.

AFTERNOON

Picture
Know all things to be like this:
As the moon in a bright sky
In some clear lake reflected,
Though to that lake the moon has never moved.
Picture
Know all things to be like this:
As an echo that derives
From music, sounds, and weeping,
Yet in that echo is no melody.
Picture
Know all things to be like this:
As a magician makes illusions
Of horses, oxen, carts and other things,
Nothing is as it appears.

–Samadhiraja (Moon Lamp) Sutra

Picture
Imagine yourself sitting upon a warm sandy beach looking at the waters horizon.
At the point that you imagine the ocean has ended per your human sight,
stretch your perception to go past the flat earth.
See with the godly part of your ocular abilities.

Sea with your mind.

Stretch your view of what appears to be the end
and extend it out until you see the edge of the future.
Most people scamper about, brooding over their next dollar,
anxious over their next love, success, and their next failure.
Being lost in thought with every choice creates a quagmire,
in black hole, vacuum, and  default creation.

Consciousness must first be there before anything else can BE.
All inquiry of the seeker of truth
must therefore relate to this cosciousness,
this sense of conscious presence
which as such
has no personal reference to any individual.

There is an extremely important but subtle aspect
of spiritual development that is often lost sight of.
It is that in each case, depending on the makeup of each psyche,
the development is taking place spontaneously
according to nature and that any deliberate efforts
on the part of the pseudo-entity only create hazards and obstructions.
If this is kept in mind,
one automatically evades the greatest spiritual danger,
which is the uprising of the ego.
What, then, is the individual to do?
Merely to let true understanding
 deeply impregnate his very being,
passively and patiently,

so that all illusions and obstructions
gradually fall off by themselves.

******
TRUE KNOWLEDGE CAN COME
ONLY WHEN THERE IS
TOTAL VACANCY.

There is a level of absence,
and it is that which has not vanished,
but that which has not yet arrived.
We all live in a pathway in the middle of time,
so there are lots of events, people, places, thoughts, experiences
still ahead of us that have not actually arrived
at the door of our hearts at all.
This is the world of the unknown.
Questions and thinking are ways
of reaching into the unknown
to find out what kind of treasures it actually holds.
The question is the place where the unknown becomes articulate in us.
A good question is something
that has incredible grace and light and depth to it.
A good question is something that always,
in some way,
plows the invisible furrows of absence
to find the nourishment and the treasure that we actually need.

AFTERNOON
I suspect that the most basic and powerful way
to connect to another person is to listen.
Just listen.
Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention.
And especially if it's given from the heart.
When people are talking,
there's no need to do anything but receive them.
Just take them in.
Care about it.
Most times caring about it is even more important than understanding it.
Most of us don't value ourselves or our love enough to know this.
It has taken me a long time to believe in the power of simply saying,
"I'm so sorry," when someone is in pain.
And meaning it.
I have even learned to respond to someone crying by just listening.
In the old days I used to reach for the tissues,
until I realized that passing a person a tissue
may be just another way to shut them down,
to take them out of their experience of sadness and grief.
Now I just listen.
Picture
When they have cried all they need to cry,
they find me there with them.
A loving silence
often has far more power to heal and to conect
 than the most well-intentioned words.

Commentary by Hazrat Inayat Khan:
Our greatest enemy is ourself. All weakness, all ignorance keeps us from the truth of our being, from all the virtues hidden in us and all perfection hidden in our souls. The first self we realize is the false self. Unless the soul is born again it will not see the kingdom of heaven. The soul is born into the false self; it is blind. In the true self the soul opens its eyes. Unless the false self is fought with, the true self cannot be realized.

The soul is a bird of paradise, a free dweller in the heavens. Its first prison is the mind, then the body. In these it becomes not only limited, but also captive.
The whole endeavor of a Sufi in life is to liberate the soul from its captivity,
which he does by conquering both mind and body.

If a man has control over himself, he will smile and be patient even if he is exposed to rages a thousand times. He will just wait. He who has spiritual control has great control; but he who has it not can control neither spiritual nor physical events. He cannot control his own sons and daughters, for he never listens to himself first. If he listened to himself, not only persons but even objects would listen to him.

There is a poem by the great Persian poet Iraqi in which he tells,
'When I went to the gate of the divine Beloved and knocked at the door, a voice came and said -- Who art thou?' When he had told, 'I am so and so', the answer came,
'There is no place for anyone else in this abode. Go back to whence thou hast come'.
He turned back and then, after a long time, after having gone through the process of the cross and of crucifixion, he again went there -- with the spirit of selflessness.
He knocked at the door; the word came, 'Who art thou? ', and he said,
'Thyself alone, for no one else exists save Thee'.
And God said,
'Enter into this abode for now it belongs to thee'.
It is such selflessness, to the extent that the thought of self is not there,
it is being dead to the self,
which is the recognition of God.

AFTERLIFE OF A MINDING-MIND      March 16, 2019                              "no personal self = no personal God"

AFTERLIFE OF A MINDING-MIND:

The SELF simply ‘IS’ and has no frame of reference
with which to ‘compare’ one state of Being with another …
there is only BEING.
While limitless attempts have been made
to ‘describe’ BEING-ness,
none are possible since BEING is infinite
and cannot be contained
with a frame of words.

John McIntosh
Excerpt from this Excellent short sharing
https://www.johnmcintosh.info/post/labels
Read just AFTER today's Morning Whisper above Surfaces

It is far more than the discovery of life without a self.
The immediate, inevitable result is an emergence
into a new dimension of knowing and being that entails
a difficult and prolonged readjustment.
The reflexive mechanism of the mind
-or whatever it is that allows us to be self-conscious -
is cut off or permanently suspended so the mind
is ever after held in a fixed now moment
out of which it cannot move in its uninterrupted gaze
upon the Unknown
.

-- Bernadette Roberts
https://www.inspiringquotes.us/author/8712-bernadette-roberts
Only God is love, and for this love to be fully realized self must step aside.
And not only do we not need a self to love God,
but for the same reason we do not need a mind to know him,
for that in us which knows God,
 is God.

-- Bernadette Roberts
The truest communication with God
is absolute, total silence;
there is not a single word in existence
 that can convey this communication.

-- Bernadette Roberts
Coming home that day from the library, Roberts turned her gaze inward
and saw there was no longer a center, no longer a self.
There was
emptiness.
She felt great joy and lightness with this knowledge.
She decided that this emptiness and joy was Christ.
She could live forever with that.
However, further annihilation was in the cards.

Chapter 2
After a while, the joy of the emptiness began to wane
and Roberts sought
to rejuvenate it by spending time alone,
simply gazing into the
emptiness,
which she was still sure was God.
Picture
On one such occasion, the emptiness expanded rapidly
and every sense of
life became drained from her.
The realization that came was:
"When there is no personal self,
there is also no personal God."

This marked the end of an interior spiritual life, as well as any other
kind of life. Roberts felt now that she was on an unknown path,
lifeless, yet she recognized life all around her. She intensely felt the
need to be in nature, as life at home was too routine and lifeless.

Though she found herself in the midst of life during her time of the
day she spent in nature, she still had to deal with an intense
emptiness.

In a matter of days another realization arrived, a new way of perceiving
reality: "God of life was not IN anything, it was just the reverse:
everything was IN God."

At this point, Roberts comments on the limitations of language: "One
thing is for sure: as long as we are caught up in words, definitions,
and all that the mind wants to cling to, we can never see how it works.
And until we can go beyond our notions regarding the true nature of life
we will never realize how totally secure we really are
and how all the fighting for individual survival and self-security
is a waste of energy."
Picture
Roberts points out that the mystic depends upon the separation of God
and self for his mysticism, for his oneness experience that he or she so
values. But the no-self experience becomes the Only God experience, and
with God eternally accessible, where is the mystical experience, the
lights and visions? It is the end of the mystical life and the beginning
of real life.

And that is what Roberts is talking about all along. She repeats that
there is the theologically defined oneness of self with God, known in
its highest category by the mystics; and there is "undefineable
essential Oneness" beyond self and God, which theology does not deal
with. It is the becoming of God, not merely the relationship with God.
These are the two ways of seeing and knowing.

With age, your physical agility may go down;
your aliveness need not go down.
Sadhguru
When we live with integrity, we further enhance intimacy with ourselves by being able to rejoice, taking active delight in our actions. Rejoicing opens us tremendously, dissolving our barriers, thereby enabling intimacy to extend to all of life.
The enlivening force itself is rapture. It brightens our vitality, our gratitude, and our love. We begin to develop rapture by rejoicing in our own goodness.
Contemplating the goodness within ourselves is a classical meditation, done to bring light, joy and rapture to the mind. Yet this classical reflection is not a way of increasing conceit. It is rather a commitment to our own happiness, seeing our happiness as the basis for intimacy with all of life. It fills us with joy and love for ourselves and a great deal of self-respect.
