Rupture and repair

It is no secret that, for many, intimate relationship is one of the great amplifiers of the unlived life. We can count on our partners to relentlessly illuminate everything that is unresolved within us. Not because they have some agenda to do so, but simply by the nature of the crucible that is formed when we allow another to truly matter to us.

We come to our relationships with an already-existing patterning that formed long ago. While this template longs to be updated, until reconfiguration it looms over us and colors our perception. It functions by way of a time machine where, when activated, it is as if we have left the “here and now,” crossed the liminal, and found ourselves back in the “there and then.”
There are aspects of ourselves that are aching to come out of the shadows and into the warmth of holding awareness. Not to harm, but as emissaries of wholeness. There is nothing like a close relationship to remind us of the orphaned feelings and vulnerable parts that have lost their way in the tangle of somatic and psychic pathways. They are exhausted from a long voyage to reach us, but have not given up.

The reminder of this truth can at times be a bit agonizing, as the other seems to have extraordinary powers to open the raw, tender, and naked dimensions of our being. But this achiness is sacred. Inside the ache is a jewel. Go there.
Please be kind to your partners and the inevitable conflict that will arise as you make this journey together. Training ourselves to harness the energy of conflict – and engage it directly, skillfully, and with an open heart – is the activity of inner and outer revolution, and requires the encoding of new circuitry.

The transformative art of rupture and repair is one that is endlessly profound, revealing that relationships of vast depth and meaning are not those free of conflict, but ones where working through conflict is embraced as path, where the participants are transformed into an alive vessel of purification, love, and healing.
This is a difficult realization to come by, and one that is unfortunately not all that popular in a world that has forgotten the gold buried in the dark. But here we are. It is up to us to bring these fruits into the collective.

When we forget our true nature,
we depend on the rules of others
and become their willing slaves.

Leading and ruling are easy to confuse.
The leader who needs obedience
is a ruler, a monarch,
who imposes laws and regulations.
This regulation creates a sense of safety
in the minds of the ruled,
so they willingly abandon

A ruler’s motives might be good,
but the spirit of the ruled
can’t help but be diminished.
A leader kindles the people’s spirits
and helps them express and fulfill

Anarchy is a fearful thing.
We have been taught for so many generations
to be afraid of our true nature,
that we can’t imagine ever trusting it.
This fear of self is what makes us so vulnerable
to the agendas of power-seeking people.
It is also what keeps us trapped in a paradigm of society that no longer works.
Lao-Tzu was essentially a “cooperative anarchist”
- one who believed that human beings were intrinsically capable of directing their own community life without the need for structured authority.
It seems utopian and fanciful to us today,
and it seemed so in Lao-Tzu’s day as well.
Yet his words still resonate more than two millennia later.
They vibrate a string deep within the human spirit
that sings to us and tells us that we have lost our way;
that we have surrendered something precious in the name of comfort and safety.
Can we find it and reclaim it?
I think we can,
because our current paradigm is collapsing and
our authentic nature is patiently waiting to assist us.

I hide my foolishness
behind a curtain of pretty words
and hope no one will know.
But then we’re all foolish,
aren’t we?
Each in our own way.
So maybe you won’t see
behind the curtain after all.

so busy behind the curtain,
manufacturing words so you might think
he really is the Great and Powerful Oz.

It’s not that I think that what I write is foolish. I write some good and truthful, sometimes even beautiful, poetry and prose. It’s my craft. I’ve been doing it for decades and I’m good at it. But when I slip into the illusion that I am as wise as my words, I am in great big heaps of trouble.
 I know very little of the Mystery,
and understand even less than what I know.
 Foolishness is not a terrible thing. It is the only appropriate way to feel as we stand before the Tao. Knowing we are foolish sets us free to find the wisdom we would never find in our hiding place behind the curtain of our ego. When I gaze at an image of the Andromeda Galaxy, our nearest galactic neighbor, one of billions of galaxies stretching into the infinity of the cosmos, I feel a great and wonderful fool and laugh

*Wu Wei is an important concept in Taoism
that literally means non-action or non-doing.
 In the Tao Te Ching, Lao Tzu explains that beings (or phenomena)
that are wholly in harmony with the Tao
behave in a completely natural, uncontrived way.
 The goal of spiritual practice for the human being is, according to Lao Tzu,
the attainment of this purely natural way of behaving,
as when the planets revolve around the sun. 
The planets effortlessly do this revolving without any sort of control, force, or attempt to revolve themselves, instead engaging in effortless and spontaneous movement.

What we call our separate life,
is simply an expression of the Tao.
When we understand this,
our life becomes the Tao Itself.
    From Tao Te Ching, Chapter 70
Wouldn’t it be grand
to let it all go?
To no longer hold in place,
with every single thought and action,
this illusion I call, “me?”
Oh, I’d still be here,
but it would no longer be
the anxious, guarded, frightened
complex of emotions
masquerading as a person.
It would be, I think,
a true human being -
being the Tao
and seeing the Tao
everywhere he looked.
Identity is a slippery thing.
We don’t let go because the “we” who is being told
(by some part of itself)
to let go - can’t possibly let go.
The true person,
the authentic human being
expressing a unique aspect of the Tao,
doesn’t need to let go.
The whole “letting go” conundrum eases
when we realize that all that is necessary
is to continue to notice our authentic nature
as it waits in every moment.
When we notice it, we become it, and the rest just slips away.
(Of course we pick it up again, sometimes only seconds later.
But a crack in the facade has occurred and another ray of light shines in.
One crack at a time
and the whole facade will crumble and,
in the light,
we will see things as they really are.

​ ​The Tao Te Ching, written in China around 600 BC,
first articulated the idea of wu wei.
“Do that which consists in taking no action and order will prevail,”
the book explains.
The idea is that we should stop trying to force action
and get comfortable doing less.
Then, when we do move, our actions are natural, energetic,
and accomplish the desired results.

Wu wei shows that when we stop making waves,
and learn to wait and watch,
we see outside forces more clearly
and make wiser moves.
Act hastily, and every step is a potential blunder,
with emotion and ego
driving our decisions more than reason.
The Tao Te Ching recommends cultivating non-action
by observing the natural world.
The skies don’t always storm; nor are birds always in flight. Stillness preserves us for action when necessary.
The Taoist storyteller Chuang Tzu
explains the idea further around 350 BC:
“From the sage’s emptiness, stillness arises;
From stillness, action.
​ From action, attainment.”

Now I know that, like all creatures,
I have a finite amount of energy.
By not acting,
we conserve energy so that we can expend it
when the moment is right.
So wu wei isn’t about resignation or laziness.
about self-preservation—an important skill.
As 2017 begins, I’m sitting still: attentive and ready.
