There is a well known Eastern legend giving the idea of a soul who had found truth.
There was a wall of laughter and of smiles.
This wall existed for ages and many tried to climb it,
but few succeeded.

Those who had climbed upon it saw something beyond,
and so interested were they that they smiled,
climbed over the wall and never returned.

The people of the town began to wonder
what magic could there be and what attraction,
that whoever climbed the wall never returned.
So they called it the wall of mystery.

Then they said,
'We must make an enquiry
and send someone who can reach the top,

he smiled and tried to jump over it,
but they pulled him back.

Still he smiled,
and when the people eagerly asked,
'what did you see there?'
he did not answer,
he only smiled.

This is the condition of the seer.
The man who in the shrine of his heart
has seen the vision of God,
the one who has the realization of truth,
can only smile,
for words can never really explain
what truth means.

The secret of all attainment is centered in reserve.
Spiritual or material,
when a person has told his plans to others,
he has let out the energy that he should have kept
as a reservoir of power for the accomplishment of his object.

... The teaching, 'Be wise as a serpent,' may be interpreted,
'Be quiet as a serpent.'
It is quietude that gives wisdom and power.
The thought held in mind speaks to the mind of another,
but the thought spoken out most often
only reaches the ears of a person.
Every plan has a period of development;
and if man has power over his impulse,
by retaining the thought silently in mind,
he allows the plan to develop
and to take all necessary changes
that it may take for its culmination.

But when the impulse expresses the thought,
it so to speak 'puts out the flame,'
thus hindering the development of the plan.
The wise speak with their mind many times
before they speak about it to anybody.

As soon as a person thinks, 'I am more,'
the doors of knowledge are closed.
He will no more be able to widen his knowledge
because automatically,
the doors of his heart are closed

Spiritual knowledge, the knowledge of life,
is so intoxicating, so exalting,
it gives such a great joy,
that one begins to pour out one's knowledge
before anyone who comes along
as soon as this knowledge springs up.

But if at that time the disciple could realize
that he should conserve that kindling of the light,
reserve it, keep it within himself and let it deepen,
then his words would not be necessary
and his presence would enlighten people.

As soon as the spring rises and he pours forth
what comes out of that spring in words,
although on the one side his vanity will be satisfied,
on the other side his energy will be exhausted.

The little spring that had risen,
he has poured out before others
and he remains without power.
This is why reserve is taught to the true disciple,
the conserving of inspiration and power.

it is the one who listens who is wise.

There are two deaths, the inner and the external.
The first is going into the center,
the second going into the vastness.

There is a [Hadith] which says: Mutu kubla anta mutu, which means, 'Die before death.'
A poet says,
'Only he attains to the peace of the Lord who loses himself.'
God said to Moses, 'No man shall see me and live.'
To see God we must be non-existent.
What does all this mean?
It means that when we see our being with open eyes,
we see that there are two aspects to our being:
the false and the true.
The false life is that of the body and mind,
which only exists as long as the life is within.
In the absence of that life the body cannot go on.

We mistake the true life for the false,
and the false for the true.

Dying is this:
when there is a fruit or something sweet and good to taste,
the child comes to its mother and says,
'Will you give it to me?'
Although it would have given pleasure to the mother to eat it,
she gives it to the child.
The eating of it by the child is enjoyed by the mother.
That is death.

She enjoys her life in the joy of another.
Those who rejoice in the joy of another,
though at their own expense,
have taken the first step towards true life.

... If we enjoy a beautiful thing so much that we would like to have it, and then give that joy to another,
enjoying it through his experience,
we are dead.
That is our death.
Yet, we live more than he.
Our life is much vaster, deeper, greater.

Seemingly it is a renunciation, an annihilation,
but in truth it is a mastery.
The real meaning of crucifixion is to crucify this false self,
and so resurrect the true self.
As long as the false self is not crucified,
the true self is still not realized.
By Sufis it is called Fana, annihilation.
All the attempts made by true sages and seekers
after real truth are for the one aim
of attaining to everlasting life.

THERE'S NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT TO HAVE A GOOD CRY

When the courage (le cœur: heart, French) to sit still and see what might bubble up from the heart’s cauldron finds us –
and finds us innocent of any agenda to analyse,
to fix or flee, tears will most assuredly flow.

I was already ancient when, by some wild grace,
courage found me and guided me into my body’s dark knowledge.

In my cocksure ignorance I assumed

(Yes, bliss – I had no idea that bliss
is simply the opening of the heart.)

Yet now the tears arise from a depth beyond the personal,
from a well of sorrow that’s ownerless.

Personally I don’t feel the need for notions of karma and reincarnation,
but my lived experience shows me
that whatever is happening here
is dynamically all-inclusive
and interpenetrating across time and space.

No separation can be found.
The tears belong to all of us because there is only one of us.

TOTAL SURRENDER

“I surrender … except for this.”
This is how the false self surrenders when it comes knocking.

For most in the beginning,
surrender arises due to intense suffering.
It is often expressed as ‘giving up’ rather than ‘giving in’,
which is much different.
The ‘giving up’ kind of surrender ‘bargains’ much like most prayers,
asking for relief or gifts of some kind in exchange
for a conditioning obedience,
and it is NOT authentic.

True surrender recognizes
that there is a higher power
that can take care of Life far better
than the body/mind can
and releases ‘everything’ to IT.

It does not say;
“I surrender all, except for this or that,
which I will continue to monitor and intervene with
… just in case.”

True surrender is total or not at all.
‘Thy will be done’ is one way to acknowledge this
[if that resonates with you].

It is another way of saying YES to ‘What Is’,
accepting that in some way
‘What Is’ is an aspect of what is Perfect
for your highest purpose
[despite not knowing what that is].

Until you have stepped off
the ‘illusionary’ wheel of karma - totally Free,
it will shape your destiny in the grand dream
and in doing so expose that which is NOT you.

It is a bitter-sweet blessing in that respect
and part of the unfolding Will of the God-SELF You Are
to return you to
‘Your Freedom’.

A soul shows the proof of its evolution in the degree of the tolerance it shows.
The life in the lower creation shows the lack of tolerance.
The tendency of fighting with one another, which one sees among beasts and birds, shows the reason at the back of it, that intolerance is born in their nature.
... But when a soul has evolved still more, tolerance becomes the natural thing for him. Because the highly evolved soul then begins to realize

The separation is on the surface of life,

Therefore tolerance is not learned fully by trying to follow it as a good principle.

I suspect that the most basic and powerful way
to connect to another person is to listen.
Just listen.
Perhaps the most important thing we ever give each other is our attention.

When people are talking,
there's no need to do anything but receive them.

Most times caring about it is even more important than understanding it.

It has taken me a long time to believe in the power of simply saying,

‘Individual’ means undivided.

when we are relieved of

In fact, it is the opposite.
It is complete openness,

vulnerability and availability.

Actually, suffering is our resistance to feeling,

We allow it to use us.
We allow it to shape our life.
We don’t put it into another straitjacket
and dictate how it should operate.

Consciousness is absolute Freedom.
We allow this Freedom to express itself as it will, how it will,
where it will and when it will.
In one body/ mind this might take the shape
of a character that is quiet and sensitive,
whilst in another it may express itself
in a wild and exuberant way.

We should not be misled by appearances
It is the attitude of inner freedom
that is the hallmark of Understanding,
and this attitude of inner freedom
uses all possible means
of
expression and communication.

which brings, at best, momentary satisfaction.
Through his spiritual practices the Sufi learns to chain the Nafs,

Then the Nafs is not destroyed, but harnessed.
The whole of man's being is attuned to God
and everything within him serves God.
This is the work of all on the path of illumination,

than by meditation and
by practicing the presence of God.

they misuse him;
they misjudge him and blame him for doing things

What difficulties there are to face!

On Forgetting

In the field of eternality what is real cannot be threatened.
In the field of time (manifestation)
what is real is created by our thoughts.

to the limitation of thought

Out of that space that she
could not command, could
not direct, could extract
nothing from, except what
was given by the space itself,

in the atomosphere out on beach...just AMAZING...
....was literaly mesmerized this afternoon...Too Much To Tell..

Tides coming WAY in and Mother Ocean not as churned up
as she will be before this storm passes 450 miles north of us...
....or so they say today!
In fact she seems calm just to look at her, but O those Breakers are full of roaring energy...
....this afternoon the water crept up gently and VERY far by surprise every now and then.... had to run out of ocean to rescue self-timer camera two times...
....before the water reached it.

abdomen, bone marrow. How spacious is your body!

Now be aware of the vacuum in a single atom. At any point in your flesh,
enter the silent sub-nuclear vastness beyond the stars. Tumble down through
the center of the densest proton. Fall into That. Feel the silence...

The total information about every galaxy that ever whirled or will ever
spin forth, is contained in the nameless point, the infinitesimal bindu at
the center of a quark, where all the gravity-waves in creation bring you
home to the singularity of your Self.

Your mind struck dumb with beauty, let the particles of your body dissolve
into the hum of the void, the emptiness that sparkles with virtual photons

Although indulgence is a quality of the heart,
it is infused with a great deal of intelligence.
When we have a better understanding of what a human being is,
of the various factors that make up their deeper nature,
of the influences that life conditions can have on their behaviour,

Once I was with a sage whom many people went to see.
He pleased them all, and he was not fond of disputing or discussing,

Discussion is for those who say,

But the world is always fighting and discussing and disputing.

Many would come and try to dispute with him,
but he did his best to avoid dispute.
I was very fond of listening to his way of dealing with inquirers.
My friends wanted to discuss what the ideal life is.
He said, 'Whatever you think it is.'

But my friends were not satisfied with this. They wanted a discussion.
They answered,
'Do you think this worldly life, with so many responsibilities,
with strife from morning to evening,
can be the ideal life?'
He said, 'Yes.'

They asked, 'Do you not think that the life you lead,
retirement and seclusion,
is the ideal life?'
He answered, 'Yes.'

They said, 'But how can we give up our present life,
our responsibilities to our children,
our occupations, and all these things that take up so much time.
How can we leave that life in order to follow your ideal life?'
He said, 'Do not leave it.'

What do I mean by the heart?
iS it the nervous center in the midst of the breast,
the small piece of flesh that doctors call the heart?

No, the definition of the heart is that it is the depth of the mind,
the mind being the surface of the heart.
That in us which feels is the heart,
that which thinks is the mind.

It is the same thing which thinks and feels,
but the direction is different:
feeling comes from the depth,
thought from the surface.

When thought is not linked with feeling
it is just like a plant rising up from the earth,
the root of which has not gone deep.
A thought without feeling is a powerless thought;
it is just like a plant without a deep root.

A tree the root of which has gone deep into the earth is stronger,
more reliable,
and so the thought deeply rooted in the heart
has greater power.

Shadow-sensitive, emotionally-grounded inner work is distinct to each nervous system. The hero or heroine's journey is individual by nature, requiring experiential, primary experience; a collective spirituality will never meet the longing within. While there are many mentors and guides that appear as grace along the way, the true teacher will always point you back into your own uniqueness.

The journey of the heart is radical and revolutionary

Falsehood, whatever its apparent success, has its limitations and its end.
For at every step the false person will feel falseness;
and with every step a person takes towards falsehood,
he will feel his feet growing heavier and heavier
when he encounters the truth,
while those who walk towards the truth
will feel their feet becoming lighter
with every step they take.

Truth is the divine element in man.
