New Year's Wish

The past year has been for me and for many others,
an opportunity to cling to God
in the face of hardship and pain.
In our acceptance and surrender
we grow closer to God.

To recognize your powerlessness in the face of suffering can be the door to a small circle of peace within,
a stillpoint.
It used to seem to me that
Catholic saints were obsessed with suffering,
gladly accepting and even welcoming it.

This is because pain brought them
to the deep truth of God’s nearness.

In A Passage through Self, Bernadette said:

"Those in the unitive state
now have a balanced psyche
and no extremes are possible.
Once their feelings reach a certain threshold,
that is it,
they come to an end.

They are either stopped and go no further
or they, as it were, bump into God.
So these feelings act kind of as a reminder of God’s presence.

That is why when some saints reached the unitive state
they actually went out and sought suffering,
looked for problems because they realized this situation.

The greater the problems,
the greater the awareness of God.
The more they had to put up with,
the more they had to contact this center,
and the more that center was revealed."

Rather than wishing you
a prosperous and peace-filled New Year,
let me wish you instead everything you need
to draw closer to God.
May the fire of your longing light every day.

Whatever else can be said about Merton, and much has been said,
one thing is certain: he was a monk who loved trees.
One might say I had decided to marry the silence of the forest,
he wrote.
"The sweet dark warmth of the whole world will have to be my wife.
Out of the heart of that dark warmth
comes the secret that is heard only in silence …
Perhaps I have an obligation to preserve the stillness,
the silence, the poverty,
the virginal point of pure nothingness
which is at the center of all other loves."
He had been searching for that center his whole life.
Le point vierge, he called it.

This monk who wed the silence of the forest
was also a gregarious lover of people,
which is exactly why he needed to flee their presence.
He yearned for the kind of deep solitude
where he could shed his public persona
and live for God alone.
Perhaps he would find it among the California redwoods,
along the Lost Coast,
or in New Mexico’s Chama River Canyon.

I first discovered the phrase in Merton’s book Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander, where he wrote:
At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin and by illusion, a point of pure truth, a point or spark which belongs entirely to God, which is never at our disposal, from which God disposes of our lives, which is inaccessible to the fantasies of our own mind or the brutalities of our own will.

This little point of nothingness and of absolute poverty
is the pure glory of God in us.
Merton helped me articulate a belief
I’d long suspected, that the core of our being is not rotten,
as my Protestant upbringing had insisted,
but is a place of untouched beauty and wholeness
reserved for God alone,
a place beyond ego that no evil can touch.

Merton borrowed the phrase le point vierge
from Sufi scholar Louis Massignon,
who borrowed the idea
from the ninth-century Sufi Mansur al-Hallaj.
As al-Hallaj wrote,
“Our hearts, in their secrecy,
are a virgin alone,
where no dreamer’s dream penetrates--
the heart where the presence of the Lord penetrates,
there to be conceived.”

Eight crows wheeled in the sky overhead,
casting their shadows on the bare hillside.
He read the Astavakra Gita on reincarnation,
looked out over the Pacific, and wrote:

Reincarnation or not,
I am as tired of talking and writing
as if I had done it for centuries.
Now it is the time to listen at length to this Asian ocean.

In the fall he would cross this Asian ocean on a different pilgrimage, one that would be his last.
Before he left, he photographed Needle Rock.

The great Yang-Yin of sea rock mist,
diffused light and half hidden mountain …
an interior landscape, yet there.
In other words,
what is written within me is there.
“Thou art that.”

As Merton wrote in his essay “From Pilgrimage to Crusade,” the peregrini set out not in order to visit a sacred shrine
but to seek solitude and exile.

If the peregrinus had a goal, it was to find his
“place of resurrection”--

a specific place where he might live out his remaining days
in prayer and solitude.

This was not simply wandering for its own sake, Merton wrote:

“It was a journey to a mysterious, unknown,
but divinely appointed place,
which was to be the place of the monk’s
ultimate meeting with God.”

Whether Merton sought God here in this desert canyon
or along the desolate Mendocino coast
or in the deep hush of the redwoods,
he began to suspect that his search for the perfect hermitage
was a chimera.

The country which is nowhere is the real home.
His real home was le point vierge,
the place in himself reserved only for God.
Perhaps I have an obligation to preserve the stillness,
the silence, the poverty, the virginal point of pure nothingness
which is at the center of all other loves.

The Christian of the future, Rahner said fifty years ago,
will either be a mystic or cease to exist.
Brother Leander looks hard at me with his good eye.
“And what is mysticism?
The experience of God in the interior of one’s being.
I always liked Hermann Hesse’s definition of a mystic:
a poet without verses,
a painter without a brush,
a musician without notes.”

I tell Brother Leander that I pray the Jesus Prayer,
a kind of mantra used by the early desert monks.
“Yes, laddie, and you must pray the prayer
not only with your lips or your mind
but with your heart.”

IT WAS A COLLECTIVE madness that befell European Christianity
in the medieval years when Christians gave up wandering
in search of God and turned their search
toward wealth and power.
By the twelfth century,
the peaceful and defenseless peregrinatio of the Irish monks
had been replaced by the violence of the Crusades.
When knights, kings, and priests attempted to liberate
the land of Abraham through force, Merton wrote,
they implanted within the European psyche
an insidious pattern of conquest
that would repeat itself many times
over the coming centuries.

By the time Europeans set foot in North America,
the pilgrim mentality and crusader mentality had finally fused,
creating a singular and disastrous form of alienation
that resulted in the conquest of indigenous peoples.

As Merton wrote:
“Centuries of ardent, unconscious desire for the Lost Island
had established a kind of right to paradise once it was found.
It never occurred to the sixteenth-century Spaniard or Englishman to doubt for a moment that the new world was entirely and rightly his.
It had been promised and given to him by God.
It was the end of centuries of pilgrimage.”

“There is no lost island merely for the individual,”
Merton concluded in his essay on pilgrimage.
“We are all pieces of the paradise isle.”

In no time is that more true than now,
in this age when our paradise isle
is threatened at every turn.
Perhaps the meaning of pilgrimage now
in this age of climate change and species loss
is that the fruits of our inner life in God
cannot remain ours alone;
they must be shared for the sake of all life.
The portal to the invisible must be visible.
“What can we gain by sailing to the moon
if we are not able to cross the abyss
that separates us from ourselves?”
Merton asked.
“This is the most important of all voyages of discovery,
and without it all the rest are not only useless but disastrous.”

To update Merton’s question:
What can we gain by fixing climate change
or ending poverty
or terraforming Mars
if we remain alienated from ourselves?
How to cross that abyss?
Brother Leander:
You must let the prayer descend to your heart, laddie!
Brother Isidore:
Let us be silent before God who made us.
Brother Jerome:
You learn to talk to silence,
and silence answers in silence.

This is the work:
to take these feelings of loneliness and exile
and bring them into the furnace of the heart,
where emotional abandonment becomes mystical abandonment.
Sitting in this tiny patch of shade,
surrounded by white sage and ocotillo,
I bring these thoughts into prayer.

Normally my prayers are a dull litany of requests and complaints,
the hypes and gripes of a lukewarm spiritual life,
but here on the edge of this vast mesa,
I feel those petitions giving way to something more compelling,
an opening into a more spacious country.
An uncomplicated resting in God,
who seems to have no other agenda
than to welcome me into this place of
silence and mercy and at-oneness.
A feeling of Presence
that is so much more than the breeze on my face
or the sweat evaporating on my skin.

CRAVING LIFE
Even if ruins stink of rotten antiquity,
poor’s hands and mouths still search
for treasures in ruins, and one dense night
they get to lick one or the other edible pearls
and deposit them in their box of ‘everyday’.

Mind Games...

Tired of noisy words,
the "spiritual abstractions"
cleverly strung together
by word-crafters espousing
their mind games - not
from the simplicity of their Heart,
but the complexities of their minds;
having been absorbed by too many
conceptual ideas: "there is only here
and Now"; "there is no other"; "there
is no me"; "'i' does not exist -
creating a phantom reality from those concepts
and ideas on which to hang your mind;
plying their paradoxes into 'non-dual' jargon.

Once a player in "The Mind Games",
I now seek refuge in the simplicity of the Heart,
and a more "direct experience" of what cannot be

We practice letting go of judgments.
As a beginning meditator,
I certainly had a tendency to judge
the way I was performing this new task:

My breath isn't good enough, deep enough,
broad enough, subtle enough, clear enough.
I found that I loaded on to the simple act of breathing
all sorts of pronouncements and projections
about what kind of person I was.

Returning to the breath,
letting go of these judgments,
birth to compassion to myself.

We become aware of a calm, stable center
that can steady us even when our lives are in upheaval.
The better you get at concentrating your attention
on the chosen object, the breath,
the deeper the stillness and calm you feel.

As your mind withdraws from obsessive thinking,
fruitless worry, and self-recrimination,
you feel a sense of refuge.
You have a safe place to go,
and it's within.

The secret of all attainment is centered in reserve.
Spiritual or material,
when a person has told his plans to others,
he has let out the energy that he should have kept

It is quietude that gives wisdom and power.

AFTERNOON

There is a very important moment when you listen inside,
when you listen to the listening itself.
When you are aware in listening, there is no listener
and nothing is listened to.

There is only Listening.

It is tremendous to discover oneself in listening.
But first there is Listening to an object,
then comes listening to ourself.

When listening is Silence,
our musical instrument, our body,
is completely penetrated by this objectless Listening.

Then there is something born
that is beyond the human being.

You are not body, senses and mind.
Really live in the absence of what you are not
and this reality will be the background of life.

Live in the absence of yourself.

In the absence of yourself there is presence.
We should take every opportunity
to listen to ourselves
without directing,
without changing,
or looking for something new.

When we listen to ourselves and sustain the listening,
there’s transformation,
there’s a kind of metamorphosis.

This directionless Listening
is fixed neither in the forehead,
nor in the heart,
nor in the abdominal region.
Listening is absolutely objectless.

It is really a bird that flies everywhere.
See when it lands.

The moment you become aware that you fix it,
in that awareness an emptiness will appear
and this becomes openness.
Don’t put the bird in a cage.
Open all the doors.

Abandon all residue in the forehead.
Only then can knowledge become being the knowing.
Knowledge takes place in the forehead,
in front of you.
Being knowing is localized nowhere.
But temporarily it is localized as if behind you.

This feeling of going behind is very important
because it takes you away from
the factory of thoughts in the forehead.

When you are localized behind you
at the base of the skull,
you cannot think.

Even the impulse to think dies down.
No formulation can occur when you are localized behind.

But eventually even this subtle localization dissolves
and you find yourself nowhere,
living in nowhere.
Keep the flavor of our meeting alive.

Even if human beings aren’t aware of it,
all of them come to earth with the imprints
of what they experienced in the heavenly regions with God.
This life is recorded within them as an indelible memory, which is why they sometimes feel nostalgia for it.

Sometimes, an encounter, a face, a reading, a landscape,
an image, or music awakens a distant memory within them.
They again experience a few moments of paradise, they feel inhabited by peace and light.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t last;
and when the time comes to resume their daily activities, they fail to realize that there is something
they could do to retain these states,
and they even forget them.

Far from God, far from the spiritual sun,
humans gradually lose every opportunity to live and manifest themselves with joy, love and freedom.

They could very easily lead their earthly lives and fulfill their obligations and still maintain their bond with him.

But this obviously requires a lot of vigilance and,
when they feel they are drifting away,
they must do everything to find their way back.

There are two deaths, the inner and the external.
The first is going into the center,
the second going into the vastness.

There is a [Hadith] which says: Mutu kubla anta mutu, which means, 'Die before death.'
A poet says,
'Only he attains to the peace of the Lord who loses himself.'
God said to Moses, 'No man shall see me and live.'
To see God we must be non-existent.
What does all this mean?
It means that when we see our being with open eyes,
we see that there are two aspects to our being:
the false and the true.
The false life is that of the body and mind,
which only exists as long as the life is within.
In the absence of that life the body cannot go on.

We mistake the true life for the false,
and the false for the true.

Dying is this:
when there is a fruit or something sweet and good to taste,
the child comes to its mother and says,
'Will you give it to me?'
Although it would have given pleasure to the mother to eat it,
she gives it to the child.
The eating of it by the child is enjoyed by the mother.
That is death.

She enjoys her life in the joy of another.
Those who rejoice in the joy of another,
though at their own expense,
have taken the first step towards true life.

... If we enjoy a beautiful thing so much that we would like to have it, and then give that joy to another,
enjoying it through his experience,
we are dead.
That is our death.
Yet, we live more than he.
Our life is much vaster, deeper, greater.

Seemingly it is a renunciation, an annihilation,
but in truth it is a mastery.
The real meaning of crucifixion is to crucify this false self,
and so resurrect the true self.
As long as the false self is not crucified,
the true self is still not realized.
By Sufis it is called Fana, annihilation.
All the attempts made by true sages and seekers
after real truth are for the one aim
of attaining to everlasting life.

Looking and Seeing

The glaring contrast between seeing and looking
– at the world around us –
is immense; it is fateful.
Everything in our society seems to conspire
against our inborn human gift of seeing.

We have become addicted to

to stare passively at those burning tanks,
those animals choking in oil spills.
We perfunctorily shake our heads,
take another sip of our drink,
and stare at the manic commercials
until the thing switches back to smiling bigwigs
reviewing honor guards,
rows of corpses,
and beauty queens preening.

No wonder that once the art of seeing is lost,
Meaning is lost,

This silence happens
when you turn towards tenderness
every time an unwanted feeling
enters your inner landscape.
This silence happens
when you have surrendered
all resistance to what is.

This silence happens
when you are no longer
the center of your universe,
when you have become without a center
and the whole universe is in you.
Without resistance,
there is no inner conflict,
no inner division,
no outside and no inside,
no barrier and no boundary.

When you know your true nature as silence,
there is no need to do meditation ..
you ARE meditation.
True meditation is a state of being.
It is your natural open state.
In your natural open state,
there is nothing to move away from
and nothing to move towards.
You are simply and irrevocably here.
There is no longer a question ..
because in silence all questions fall away.

So,
it’s not about whether you meditate or not.
It’s about whether you can fall
into the silence that is always here
prior to your ideas of what meditation is
or what it can give you
or where it can take you.
Whether you sit in deep stillness
or whether you are doing something in the world,
this silence is always here ..
it is in you as being-ness.
Being-ness does not need to do meditation
.. it IS meditation.

I am often asked whether I meditate or not
.. and I sort of shake my head,
unable to give a definitive answer.
Did I used to do meditation? Yes.
Until meditation swallowed me up
and all that was left was silence.
Now the whole of life is meditation,
without doing a practice,
without trying to get anywhere,
without trying to change anything.
Now .. I AM meditation.

So,
perhaps it is wise to ask a different question
.. how can I meet myself and meet the world as silence?

Perhaps this question will turn
the mind around from its horizontal searching
into the
verticality of being
that is always here.

And then you will discover
what true meditation is.
