Awareness in healthy humans is what allows
the capacity for and sense of alive-ness.

Alive-ness cannot be cultivated – it is surely there or not,
and if it’s not, you won’t be reading this.

Awareness likewise cannot be cultivated,
since, try as we might,
we cannot find it!
Yet it is always present.

The presence of Awareness is only obscured
by the noise of our notions
and
opinions about everything.

Making things is a wonderful way
of meeting these notions.

Awareness itself then performs the remarkable deed
of dissolving these hindrances,
seemingly opening itself up to more sense of itself.

Heightened awareness of
all the worlds assumed to be real
– both outwardly and in the hidden recesses of the mind – inevitably opens up new perspectives on life,
and,
if there is ripeness,
awakening might ‘happen’.

Without a whisper of will,
without a trace of trying,
life awakens to itself and knows itself
as
naked Knowingness.

Without a name,
belonging to no person,
with no history,
no future,
containing nothing,
without preferences,

There is a well known Eastern legend
giving the idea of a soul who had found truth.
There was a wall of laughter and of smiles.
This wall existed for ages and many tried to climb it, but few succeeded.

Those who had climbed upon it saw something beyond,
and so interested were they that they smiled,
climbed over the wall and never returned.

The people of the town began to wonder
what magic could there be and what attraction,
that whoever climbed over the wall never returned.
So they called it the wall of mystery.

Then they said,
'We must make an enquiry and send someone
who can reach the top,
but we must tie him with a rope to hold him back.'

When the man they had thus sent reached the top of the wall,
he smiled and tried to jump over it,
but they pulled him back.
Still he smiled, and when the people eagerly asked,
'what did you see there?'

This is the condition of the seer.

THERE'S NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT TO HAVE A GOOD CRY

When the courage (le cœur: heart, French) to sit still and see what might bubble up from the heart’s cauldron finds us –
and finds us innocent of any agenda to analyse,
to fix or flee, tears will most assuredly flow.

I was already ancient when, by some wild grace,
courage found me and guided me into my body’s dark knowledge.
(I wrote about it in this post
at my ‘echoes from emptiness’ blog –
following fear into the star-stuff of my cells).

In my cocksure ignorance I assumed
it would all be done and dusted within a modest time-frame.

Three years later the tears are still falling,
the heart is still cracking, crumbling, awash in tenderness,
trembling with bliss.

(Yes, bliss – I had no idea that bliss
is simply the opening of the heart.)

Yet now the tears arise from a depth beyond the personal,
from a well of sorrow that’s ownerless.

Personally I don’t feel the need for notions of karma and reincarnation,
but my lived experience shows me
that whatever is happening here
is dynamically all-inclusive
and interpenetrating across time and space.

No separation can be found.
The tears belong to all of us because there is only one of us.

Suddenly a familiar
yet most overwhelming emotion

I take off my clothes,
lift them to my face,
inhale the fragrance of my skin.
By what alchemy was that unique odour created?

I soak in the bath,
submerged to my chin.
Wetness, warmth: what registers these sensations
yet never gets wet?

I towel-dry my mop of silver hair.
I marvel that it grows, it falls out;
more grows, automatically.
Can I spin one thread of hair?

I trim a toenail.
How does this perfect toe-guard
know how to grow?
Is there a how-to manual for nails (and hair and cells)?

My scissors slip.
I watch my bright blood slowly seep,
congeal, clot (or not).
Can I control a clot?

I listen to the ambient sounds of my environment.
By what miracle can I hear
the kettle boiling urgently,
and those rowdy Kookaburras?

I make coffee and slowly savour the flavour,
asking myself,
(eyes shut)
Where exactly is ‘taste’ located?

Then, uninvited,
the mother of all questions shows up:
Where’s my world viewed from?
I gaze undistractedly
at my coffee cup.

I can’t find a point of perspective.
So then I try to find a viewer.
Can I find a fixed point,
a “me”?

Almost 75 years of wondering,
checking for myself,
what can I report?
Well, as the saying goes:
All the lights are on but
no one’s home.

I imagined myself into existence,
only to find I am unfindable.
What I find is inescapable space.
Space that’s unimagined, and unarguably aware.

Space – ceaselessly birthing
all experience in, and as, time,
including this tricky two-step called
BE-ing.

Aware space, dancing
as every sensation, feeling, thought,
every belief – questioned or not,
every thing and every no-thing too.

And I,
hobbled and hollow-boned,
know its fancy footwork as my own.

Don’t you just love the way a few moments
of empty-mind
spiked with questions
of the unanswerable kind
can deliver you to your
effulgent nothingness?

The life one recognizes is only the mortal aspect of life.
Very few have ever seen or been conscious of the immortal aspect at all.
Once one has realized life,
that which one has hitherto called life
is found to be only a glimpse or shadow
of the real life
that is beyond comprehension.

Plato wrote that we live in a shadow world,
where we confuse the shadow of ourselves with reality.
This is the Nafs, the false ego, which stands in the light before God,
causing, so to speak, a spiritual eclipse....
The Nafs turns us from the One to the many,
enticing us with the things of this world.
Then man attaches himself to one thing after another,
which brings, at best, momentary satisfaction.
Through his spiritual practices the Sufi learns to chain the Nafs,
to perceive that it is only a shadow of reality;
and finding the sun of truth within his being,
looking upon it,
one is no longer aware of the shadow.

Then the Nafs is not destroyed, but harnessed.
The whole of man's being is attuned to God
and everything within him serves God.
This is the work of all on the path of illumination,
of whatever school they may be.
There is no other obstacle than this false self,
and there is no better means of controlling it
than by meditation
and by practicing
the presence of God.

Silence - is life and fulfilment

True silence is not only an absence of noise,

I am writing this in the midst of another dive –
a somatic meditation retreat, which I think of as
a pre-death trauma detox.
For the most part I’m avoiding the screen,
but this pressed to be posted.

Fear is a re-action posing as a new sensation.
When I learned that after the age of six or seven
we never experience a new emotion,
but endlessly experience a replay of those established in infant-hood
– albeit dressed up in fresh scenarios –
I was shocked.
I realised that since I’m well over the age of six,
any experience of fear will always be a re-action.
A re-enactment.

Another shocker came with this:
98% of what the body knows is unavailable to our conscious awareness.
Meaning that – for the most part –
I don’t know what I’m afraid of and why.
Which makes it tricky to talk about “not choosing fear” –
let alone being “honest” with myself.
Gulp.

The primal imprints of my early experience
were laid down in the cells long before
there were words to describe anything,
and proceed to map out my experience,
decade after decade.
Without my conscious awareness having a clue.
And so it goes for all of us.
Until something moves us to inquire.

When God created us,
he gave us everything we need to feed our physical body,
our heart, our mind, our soul and our spirit.
So, why do so many people feel poor and wretched?
Because they do not know how to take in these subtle elements.
And how could they, anyway?
They cannot see them or feel them, so how could they benefit from them?
All they are able to do is complain: they don’t have this, they don’t have that…

They have everything at their disposal, yet they remain in poverty,
because they are blind, weak and lazy.
They themselves set the limit:
they are content just to eat, drink and breathe,
that is to say, to feed on solid, liquid and gaseous elements,
and they leave aside the fourth element – fire, light
– the one they most need to foster their aliveness, joy and inspiration,
the one that can bring them fulfilment.

You will say,
‘But how can we feed on this fourth element; where do we find it?’
By watching the sunrise in the mornings.
That is where we learn to eat fire and drink light.

Where did we get the idea that anything could ever be permanent
in a universe of ceaseless motion?
Permanence is an impossibility; but that’s not all.

Brewing on this edge is an alive intelligence

THE QUEER OLD MAN WHO LIVED IN A CAVE
a story told by CG Jung

“There was once a queer old man who lived in a cave,
where he had sought refuge from the noise of the villages.
He was reputed to be a sorcerer, and therefore he had disciples
who hoped to learn the art of sorcery from him.
But he himself was not thinking of any such thing.

He was only seeking to know what it was that he did not know,
but which, he felt certain, was always happening.

After meditating for a very long time on that which is beyond meditation,
he saw no other way of escape from his predicament than to take a piece of red chalk
and draw all kinds of diagrams on the walls of his cave,
in order to find out what that which he did not know might look like.

After many attempts he hit on the circle.
“That’s right,” he felt, “and now for a quadrangle inside it!”
-which made it better still.

His disciples were curious;
but all they could make out was that the old man was up to something,
and they would have given anything to know what he was doing.

But when they asked him: “What are you doing there?” he made no reply.

Then they discovered the diagrams on the wall and said:
“That’s it!”-and they all imitated the diagrams.

But in so doing they turned the whole process upside down, without noticing it:
they anticipated the result in the hope of making the process repeat itself
which had led to that result.
This is how it happened then and how it still happens today.”

There exists a concept upon which
Everything else is constructed.

I recommended that people become more nonconformist and even eccentric, because when you live from the soul you are less normal

I reminded them of Plato's idea that there are ways
to be slightly mad that can be creative:
love,
contemplation,
making art,
and being seriously intuitive.

I emphasized certain gifts of soul:
being a real individual,
having a capacity for connection and love,
living intimately,
having a vision,
being a real persona and enjoying depth,
and creating from a deep place within you.

Soul is also at home amid variety and diversity.

It doesn't aspire to things like wholeness, unity, and integration.

It speaks in dreams and a generally poetic style of speech.
It appears best in stories and meandering conversations
and communing with nature.
