I was a newbie meditator and yogini
when my teacher threw this curved ball:

“Pray for disappointment.
Disappointment is the highest teacher.”

Gulp. I thought I was signing up for Transcendence 101,
not some advanced course in self-mortification.

Please explain, I asked, and she did:
Disappointment will unpick your stories.
It will shatter your certitudes.

It will strip you of hope.
It will lead you to the other side of the assumptions you unknowingly live by.

(It will be a huge shock to realise
that the only free and true choice you can ever make
is to stop, shut up, listen and open.)

If you can live with its inevitability,
it will deliver you to unbreakable peace and equanimity.
You will understand the real meaning of trust
and you will make impermanence
your touchstone.

No fatalism or nihilism involved – no ‘isms’ whatsoever.
No ideology, therapy or frantic god-bothering required.

Where is future?
Future is nowhere, just in imagination.
Past is that which is not now and future is that which is not yet.
That’s why mystics have always said:
Only the present is.
But Sosan goes a step ahead and he says:
NO YESTERDAY, NO TOMORROW, NO TODAY
NO YESTERDAY
NO TOMORROW
NO TODAY.

Not even present is.
What does he mean?
Because – he is right, absolutely right –
if there is no past
and no future,
then how can present exist?
Because present exists only between past and future.
What is the present?
A passage.
From the past you move to the future;
in that movement, just for a
single moment, the present is.

What is present?
It is just a passage from the past to the future,
it is a door from this room to that.
But if neither this room exists, nor that,
then how can the door exist?
It is a bridge between past and future.
And if both the banks are not,
how can the bridge exist?

Sosan is right.
Sosan says neither past nor future nor present.
He is saying there is no time.
And the whole language depends on time – past, future, present.

Language is a creation of the mind,
time is also a creation of the mind.
When you drop language,
time disappears.
When you drop thinking,
there is no past, no present, no future.
You go beyond time, there is no time.
When there is no time, there is eternity.
When there is no time,
you have moved into the world of the eternal.
The truth is eternal.
And all that you have got are
temporal reflections of the truth.

It is just like: a moon has arisen in the sky,
it is a full moon night, and you look deep into the lake
and the moon is there.
This moon is all that you have – the moon in the lake.
The mind mirrors;
all truths that you have are mirrored by mind,
they are reflections.

What is Sosan saying?

”Forget this lake! because this is a mirror.
Look beyond,
only then will you be able to see the real moon –
and it is there.”
But you are too much identified with the lake,
with the mirroring mind.

I first heard the phrase, "real but not true"
from Tibetan Buddhist teacher Tsoknyi Rinpoche,
and I've found it to be a great tool
for breaking through the trance.
In the midst of obsessing about our own failings,
about what will go wrong,
how others perceive us,
what's wrong with others-
some inner wisdom reminds us:
"real but not true."

Mindfulness can then reconnect us
with the vibrating sensations in our hands,
this inflowing breath,
the pressure or ache in our heart,
and we open to the larger awareness
that holds all our thoughts and feelings.

If we can realize that our fear thoughts
are real but not true,
they lose their power to possess us
and shrink our world.
We are free to inhabit our wholeness and vitality
and to appreciate
the wildflowers and the singing birds.

The sunrise experience and then the photos when downloaded are MORE than we can Tell....one possibility we decide (in order to share a taste of this), is simply put ALL sunrise photos in READ MORE at end....there are many, but this may be the best way to get a Sense, or Activate whatever Sense you might "take to"....via just Gazing the photos in order taken.

It was impossible to know/predict which camera setting was best...
...at one point, i truly Sensed the ocean was coming over and thru me,
including the sunrise sky..as though the Great Gazer had taken over all sense of any "me"..... was Gazing thru me, as me...me disappeared..... Oneness with not only the ocean approaching seen thru the lens, but the entire universe/galaxy...
...had to stop quickly and eat some bread we carry with us..

Understand the relativity of these two and the basic reality: the unity of emptiness.
In this Emptiness the two are indistinguishable and each contains in itself the whole world.
If you do not discriminate between coarse and fine
you will no be tempted to prejudice and opinion.

To return to the root is to find the meaning,
but to pursue appearances is to miss the source.

At the moment of inner enlightenment
there is a going beyond appearance and emptiness.
The changes that appear to occur in the empty world
we call real only because of our ignorance.

Do not search for the truth; only cease to hold opinions.

Do not remain in the dualistic state; avoid such pursuits carefully.
If there is a trace of this and that, the right and wrong,
the Mind-essence will be lost in confusion.

Although all dualities come from the One, do not be attached even to this One.

When mind exists undisturbed in the Way, nothing in the world can offend,
and when a thing can no longer offend it ceases to exist in the old way.

When no discriminating thoughts arise,
the old mind ceases to exist.
