Alone with God
To live on one of those solitary little islands
has always had great appeal,
just thinking about it, however, is all the uplifting
that is necessary.
What matters is not so much physical solitude as its spirit,
or the fact
we are always alone with the Alone.

yet it is actually a difficult thing to do.

In man’s search to restore simplicity
to the complexity of his life,
he mistakenly yearns
for the tribal life of the aboriginal,
or the ascetic life of renunciation of a monk.
But as long as we oppose one pole and embrace its opposite, we strengthen what we oppose.
