I can take into myself now the depths of human loneliness and grief,
open my heart now to unspeakable ecstasies and joys,
rages and terrors and passions,
all intimately mine and all beyond me.
I can weep freely, laugh like a baby now,
unrestrained by this ridiculous thing called personality,
unencumbered by the image.

I can let it all pass through,
and love it all
as it passes through.

 This is a hair's breadth from madness,
from suicide and the void and nothingness.
And precisely because of this closeness to death,
it is so alive.
Here on the precipice I can live so much each day.
I feel I could die of contentment.

(I could never settle for a half-life half-lived.
I could never half-surrender to a half-God.)

And yet, and yet, it is all so damn ordinary, this awareness.
A cup of tea with a friend.
A stroll through the park at dusk.
A fleeting memory here and there.
This human life,
illuminated with a soft divine light.

Shattered, broken, barely held together, here on the precipice.
Yet so solid too, so intact.
So comforting to be inside of my own Being.
Groundless, too,
yet so grounded in the earth,
the body and its rhythms,
the heart and its myriad feelings.

I once longed to die and I chose life,
for some reason I chose life or life chose me,
chose to keep me here,
I don't know.

I am still here,
breathing,
beyond all reason,
beyond all comprehension.
And gratitude is the only word left on my tongue now,
the only word I can speak.
All else is a foreign language.
I know nothing except ‘thank you'.

I can feel you as myself.
I have been born again.

AFTERNOON
