All the strategies I’ve been taught
to make my life safe and happy
have turned out to be
misguided illusions.
Weapons have never kept us safe;
Rules have failed to make us happy;
Plots boomerang on us every time;
and all our effort gains us nothing.

Why do we keep believing lies?
Why do we increase our speed
when heading for a cliff?
Why do we follow voices
whose intent is to crush our spirit
and control our every action?

Lao-Tzu continues to amaze me with advice
that is completely counter to my conditioned mind.
Someone inside me still believes that weapons can keep me safe;
that I must follow other people’s rules in order to survive;
and that I must try harder and harder to achieve
whatever in the hell it is we’re all striving for.

This cultural conditioning is more than just a little voice inside my own head.
It is the driving energy of the deep currents of violence,
misery, and chaos that my world faces today.
We can do our part to balance this energy by ceasing to believe this voice.
It’s always lied to us and its lies are destroying us.

You have a tree in your garden:
you can pass it several times a day without paying it any attention,
as if it were a piece of stage set made from plaster or cardboard.
But you can also be conscious that it is a living being,
and you can even approach it, greet it, talk to it, and absorb what it represents.
You may say, ‘Greet a tree, talk to it, what good can that do?’
Of course, physically and materially, this changes nothing.
But, on the subtle planes, the tree is enriched by your presence and, at the same time,
you are enriched by it.
It is you, in fact, who gains the most: you enter into communication with the life that circulates from the roots all the way to the tips of its branches,
and you also become acquainted with the invisible creatures
who live in it and look after it.
Yes, for there are beings who work to maintain life everywhere in nature.

So many theologians have distorted the image of the Creator and Master of the universe by making the devil into God's implacable enemy!
An entity that is so well able to stand up to God has to be as powerful as he is,
if not more powerful.
You will say they never thought such a thing...
But they did, and the proof is that, in Christendom,
throughout the Middle Ages and well beyond,
men and women who displayed gifts that were a little exceptional
were accused of having received these gifts from the devil,
of having made a pact with him.
And, unfortunately, the Church itself contributed to the spreading of this belief.
Yes, if the devil has held such an important position among Christians,
it is the Church itself that is responsible.
If anyone prophesied, healed the sick or received messages from heaven - oh no, it wasn't heaven inspiring them but the devil.
So, we should not be surprised if some people really did want to make a pact with him.
Why, they asked themselves, should we go and serve a powerless God, since all the knowledge and gifts come from his opponent, the devil?
Their thinking was right, in a way.
So, that is the kind of nonsense religion can lead to
when it does not possess true initiatic knowledge concerning good and evil.
