​AFTERNOON

Existence itself is a miracle!
Whatever happens in this Existence is insubstantial,
ever changing,
never better or worse,
worth neither to be grasped or rejected...​

The space in which this world is happening,
the air of pure Existence,
is complete,
overflowing with joy,
and utterly divine.
The space is without taint or boundary.
It is motionless, silent and self-luminous.

Usually our attention is absorbed by what is happening,
and so we lose the simple innocent awareness of
the Existence in which it happens.
Existence becomes the background to the play of forms
that rise and change and disappear.

But in the awakened view,
which is the clearest simplest view,
Existence becomes the foreground,
and the forms of the world sink into the background
...into the still boundless space of
Existence...

The greatest miracle is
the gift of Existence.

At every moment,
the answer to any problem
is to just observe
the dance of
Existence.

The midst of reality is very simple and very soft. 
Even hatred is simple if you don't fight it
. If you try to fight hatred, it becomes a monster. 
But if you deal with your hatred straightforwardly,
you can use hatred as an opportunity to deepen life,
or to express the depth of your life. 
The first thing you have to do is to stand up straight,
right in the middle of your life. 
This is not so easy. It's not easy because it's too simple. 
There's nothing to want, nothing to gain, 
​nothing to achieve as a result.

Right acceptance is to accept yourself as you really are,
without comparing yourself to others.
If you are a violet, be patient and wait for the violet's life force to bloom.
But others may want you to bloom in a particular way.
Maybe they will tell you to bloom no as a violet but as a rose.
But encouragement is not always good for you.

Sometimes it makes you nervous,
because it causes you to see the world dualistically.
Which will I be, a violet or a rose?
Before you compare yourself,
you are already you.

Stand up straight,
right in the vastness of your original existence,
and let the flower of your life force
bloom as you really are.

When we awaken in a spiritual sense,
we become aware of something, a central core being,
that is always unchangingly present
and fully pervasive throughout our psyche.

This is Essence,
the Self that is immortal and omnipresent.

As the Katha Upanishad states:
"That being who is awake in those that sleep,
shaping desire after desire,
that indeed is the pure.
That is Brahman, that is call the Immortal."

When awake, we are more aware of our inner self and of the external world;
we are more in touch with past history and future possibilities as well.
We are urged to awaken from the dream of our so-called reality,
in which we have been subjectively enmeshed;
and we are urged to awaken
to the divine nature inherent within,
the Teacher,
The Friend,
The Self.

The Zen philosopher D.T. Suzuki wrote,
"What is awakened is not a new experience but an old one,
which has been dormant since our loss of innocence.
The awakening is really the rediscovery
or the excavation
of a long-lost treasure--the
​ finding ourselves back in our original abode
 where we lived even before our birth."
