how to become
To be empty, to feel empty,
is to live in the wasteland near the gates of death.
This is intolerable to the soul.
We were not meant to live such shallow lives.
Our heritage and our psychic makeup
are designed for an elaborate richness
of imagination and creativity that allows us
to feel intimately connected to the ongoing creation.

and to experience the depths of life
in the same ways that our deep-time ancestors did.

Sometimes as an antidote
To fear of death,
I eat the stars
Those nights, lying on my back,
I suck them from the quenching dark
Til they are all, all inside me,
Pepper hot and sharp.

Into a universe still young,
Still warm as blood:
No outer space, just space,
The light of all the not yet stars
Drifting like a bright mist,
And all of us, and everything
Already there
But unconstrained by form.

anticipating what will happen next that we miss
the whisper of Heaven that unfolds wherever we are.
Though I have known and survived
many forms of pain,
fear is the troll in my mind
that anticipates more.
And just as a loud noise prevents us
from finding the peace in the center of silence,
fear prevents us from finding
the inch of Heaven in the center
of whatever moment we are in.
Yet, no matter how much I’ve been through
and how much I’ve learned,
I can’t stop the wave of anticipation.
No one can.
It is part of being human.

or some doubt regarding our belief systems,
and even all our divine experiences.
We do this by remaining absolutely true,
scathingly true,
to what we honestly know and experience ourselves.
