Chapter 16
Forget Everything

1
My child,
You may read or discuss scripture
As much as you like.

But until you forget everything,
You will never live in your heart.
Picture
2
You are wise.
You play and work and meditate.

But still your mind desires
That which is beyond everything,
Where all desires vanish.

3
Striving is the root of sorrow.

But who understands this?

Only when you are blessed
With the understanding of this teaching
Will you find freedom.

4
Who is lazier than the master?
He has trouble even blinking!

But only he is happy.
No one else!
5
Seeing to this,
Neglecting that. . .

But when the mind stops setting
One thing against another,
It no longer craves pleasure.

It no longer cares for wealth
Or religious duties or salvation.

6
Craving the pleasures of the senses,
You suffer attachment.

Disdaining them,
You learn detachment.

But if you desire nothing,
And disdain nothing,
Neither attachment nor detachment bind you.
Picture
7
When you live without discrimination,
  Desire arises.

When desire persists,
Feelings of preference arise,
Of liking and disliking.

They are the root and branches of the world.

Picture
8
From activity, desire.
From renunciation, aversion.

But the man of wisdom is a child.
He never sets one thing against another.

It is true!
He is a child.

Picture
9
If you desire the world,
You may try to renounce it In order to escape sorrow.
Instead, renounce desire!

Then you will be free of sorrow,
And the world will not trouble you.
Picture
10
 If you desire liberation,
But you still say "mine,"
If you feel you are the body,
You are not a wise man or seeker.

You are simply a man who suffers.
Picture

Let Hari teach you
Or Brahma, born of the lotus,
Or Shiva himself!

Unless you forget everything,
You will never live in your heart.

AFTERNOON
Character is higher than intellect.
Thinking is the function.
Living is the functionary.
The stream retreats to its source.

A great soul will be strong to live, as well as strong to think.
Does he lack organ or medium to impart his truths?
He can still fall back on this elemental force of living them.

This is a total act.
Thinking is a partial act.
The solar loses no hour which the man lives.

~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Creating Enmity - J. Krishnamurti

Surely that thing which you fight you become.
If I am angry and you meet me with anger what is the result?
More anger.

You have become that which I am.
If I am evil and you fight me with evil means
then you also become evil,
however righteous you may feel.

If I am brutal and you use brutal methods to overcome me,
then you become brutal like me.
And this we have done for thousands of years.

Surely there is a different approach than to meet hate by hate.
If I use violent methods to quell anger in myself
then I am using wrong means for a right end,
and thereby the right end ceases to be.
In this there is no understanding.
Anger is to be understood;
it is not to be overcome through violent means.
Anger may be the result of many causes and
without comprehending them there is no escape from anger.

We have created the enemy,
and becoming ourselves the enemy
in no way brings about an end to enmity.
We have to understand the cause of our enmity
and cease to feed it by our thought, feeling, and action.
This is an arduous task demanding constant
self-awareness [and Self awareness] and intelligent pliability,
for what we are society is...

The enemy and the friend are the outcome of our thought and action.
We are responsible for creating enmity
and so it is more important to be aware of our own thought and action
than to be concerned with the foe and the friend,
for right thinking puts an end to division.

Love transcends the friend and the enemy.

J. Krishnamurti

via - The Beauty We Love
whoever you are

You must habit yourself to the dazzle of the light
and of every moment of your life.
—Walt Whitman
.

I believe in an invisible universe in which we mark out our dark accomplishment.
I feel the energy of the light that makes the stone break into music,
and I suffer from the arrow-tip of longing
that pierces us to death from the very beginning
and pushes us to go searching beyond,
where the wash of uncertainty begins.

—Nelly Sachs to Paul Celan
Stockholm, 1. 9. 1958 –
from their Correspondence
There is, in sanest hours, a consciousness, a thought that rises,
independent, lifted out from all else,
calm, like the stars, shining eternal.

This is the thought of identity - yours for you,
whoever you are, as mine for me.

Miracle of miracles, beyond statement,
most spiritual and vaguest of earth's dreams,
yet hardest basic fact, and only entrance to all facts.

In such devout hours,
in the midst of the significant wonders of heaven and earth,
(significant only because of the Me in the centre)
creeds, conventions, fall away
and become of no account before this simple idea.

Under the luminous of real vision,
it alone takes possession, takes value.

Like the shadowy dwarf in the fable,
once liberated and look'd upon,
it expands over the whole earth,
and spreads to the roof of heaven.

The quality of being, in the object’s self,
according to its own central  idea and purpose,
and of growing therefrom and thereto
— not criticism by other standards, and adjustments thereto --
is the lesson of Nature.

—Walt Whitman
