And if they don’t contain kisses or landscapes,
if they don’t contain a man with his hands full,
if they don’t contain a woman in every drop,
hunger, desire, anger, roads,
they are no use as a shield or a bell:
they have no eyes, and won’t be able to open them,
they have the dead sound of precepts.
I loved the entangling of flesh,
and out of blood and love I carved my poems.
In hard earth I brought a rose to flower,
fought over by fire and dew.
That’s how I could keep on singing.

that every artist who expresses the depth and subjective truths of his life
gives something of rare value and wonder to others.
In the same way,
as socially transcendent individuals develop
a better understanding of their unique interior gifts,
as they are able to express that self in the outer forms of family,
creativity or work, they give something original and truthful to others.
Consequently, these gifts retain a vitality, force and freshness that distinguishes them from mundane outcomes usually experienced from daily effort.

Ordinary People as Monks and Mystics
“Mystics are a definite type of person. They have a distinctive life’s course, and their mission-regardless of their country or culture of origin – is always the same: to find their way “back” to that Absolute Reality which they sense is the One True Reality, and from which they believe they’ve come.”

feel how your breathing makes more space around you.
Let this darkness be a bell tower
and you the bell. As you ring,
what batters you becomes your strength.
Move back and forth into the change.
What is it like, such intensity of pain?
If the drink is bitter, turn yourself to wine.
In this uncontainable night,
be the mystery at the crossroads of your senses,
the meaning discovered there.....
say to the silent earth: I flow.
To the rushing water, speak: I am.
