A story told to Sir Laurens van der Post by the African Bushmen....
But then it was suddenly as if a voice within him was commanding him to look up
at the forbidden summit and as he did so he saw,
in the light of one of the greatest of mythological African sunsets,
a pure white feather fluttering down from on high towards him.
He put out his hand and grasped the feather and,
they who told me the story said,
he died content.
When I asked them what the name of this great white bird was, they told me:
'The bird has many names
but we believe it was
The Bird of Truth.'

that Sir Laurens, before going back to light, and,
like the hunter in the Bushman story, grasped, at last,
one feather of the
Great White Bird of Truth
in his outworn fingers.

that the more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities
of the universe about us
the less taste we shall have for the destruction of our race.
Wonder and humility are wholesome emotions,
and they do not exist side by side
with a lust for destruction

we must not begin by questioning the existence of God.
In fact, we must do the exact opposite.
If we give greater and richer meaning to every moment of our life,
the existence of God will be obvious.
God is life, the fullness of life,
and in order to feel his presence we must come alive and discover that everything around us is also alive: the earth is alive, water and air are alive, fire and light are alive!
What can a dead person feel?
No matter what you give them, they will not react,
because their life has gone and they can feel nothing.
In order to experience sensations, we must be alive.
You will say you already know this.
Yes, theoretically, everyone knows it.
But this is not enough,
which is why everywhere we go we meet so many walking corpses,
who wonder what they are doing on this earth.
May they eventually decide to revive life within themselves.

for more notes re: FEATHERFALL
O S---, YOU are the ONLY person I know to share this with….do you remember D talking about Laurens van der Post? Am sure he heard of him via Aunt Anna….over the years I have SO saturated with some of his books and especially read and re-read his anthology FEATHERFALL.
All of that to say that as we are Amazingly (Amazing Grace) Mending from the early Ja 2017 body/mind shut down/crash, reached a PEAK on the frigid sunrise beach this morning…
....a peak of wellbeing in all dimensions….on that solitary beach
…that was so gray and cold…
...just as sun finally came up, we looked down at our feet, or more Truthfully, our physical eyes were simply Drawn Down to Sand to see a LARGE WHITE BIRD FEATHER at our feet.
I immediately thought of…or rather was Whooshed with van der Post’s writing and the African Bushman story of FEATHERFALL…..that we have put on two previous OceanSpeaks over the years (can google for those)….
ONLY later, however, in Saturating with the pages we are sending next to you….did I read that the feather is white and large and from the BIRD OF TRUTH. Now if we had read that before, there was/is no conscious memory…but DO remember the Bushman could die peacefully when he found that feather…do NOT remember in the story van der Post told…in the version I read, that it said white, large white feather from BIRD OF TRUTH.
ANYWAY…..in summary, it’s been an Auspicious time since January 1, 2017 leading up to this and also on beach this morning leading up to that FEATHER.
(Really all “lifetimes” leading up to this!)
(Also there is no doubt wisdom in all of this re: Mother and her fear/phobia of feathers, but my friend M who owned that New Castle "Woo-Woo" store actually helped mother hold a real feather and not panic. I witnessed this.)
NOW FOR THE BIG SURPRISE…..you will see this at end of next message. AFTER I saturated with so many beautiful stories by and about Laurens van der Post this morning, I saw on Google a 2002 NYTimes article blurb that called van der Post
a “master deceiver”!!!!!!!!!!!!
YIKES!!! so of course read that….
What I “get” from this, is how it is I keep attracting “Master Deceivers”….people and/or jobs….in my life, and “guess what?" does it really matter, if the “story” I can tell is helpful to souls, first of all my own. If this is truth re: van der Post, at least to me, it takes NOTHING away from the value of his writing for my very soul….and of course can say that about all the PAST hells of this lifetime.
Thanks for listening….this is a Milestone Morning and time right now…..the time with R in Nassau was AMAZING and also a Milestone…everything lately really is... especially since early January….
…but finding the White Feather from Bird of Truth all of a sudden this morning was Timely, even more so than I can take time to write these moments…. had just finished sharing more Truth of Being than I EVER share with anyone here….with a white woman who loves birds, walks the beach every sunrise….is building a new house on south end (our end) of island and guess what? I’ve heard she’s from SOUTH AFRICA…..we rarely talk...only a Quiet Sunrise greeting....
.. could NOT believe I was telling her so much about my crash and burn and recuperation….it was a brief telling, but much more than we ever talk to anyone around here….soon she will pick me up and give me tour of their new home….we tried that a few months back, and uncanny things happened to keep it from happening….
OK..am finished (for now)….
Next message is the info and some wonderful reads via van der Post...some of the sources may not be listed...as mental mind was slowed due to the saturations with van der Post links and the entire experience this morning ...since early early before sunrise and onward

one should constantly try to forgive
and to care as much for the sinner and the sinned against,
the friend and partner as for the enemy.
For it is the only way to heal, to make whole, to grow, to progress.
The French grandmother of his father used to warn him:
"Always remember, all men tend to become that which they oppose."
He explained the meaning he wanted to give his life in conversations with me recorded in
A Walk with a White Bushman (1986):
I have tried to take no heed of the morrow - not in an irresponsible way
but as an act of trust in a life given in trust.
In that sense I go from day to day,
and although I love the instant I have a sense of immense distance
and a great open horizon in front of me.
It seems that the footsteps are extremely important and that,
if I look after the footsteps,
the miles will take care of themselves.
These formative years perhaps help explain van der Post's lifelong desire
to root himself in the African experience
and to make the history of the aboriginal African not only his own,
but that of all mankind.
"I have not been to a continent or island from East to West," he said,
"where I have not found that when men fall asleep
something like the Bushman awakes and beckons him."
His role and place in life, even if he was familiar with the corridors of power,
were, however, one of self-employment.
In his pursuit of always changing and elusive horizons,
van der Post never put a limit to his efforts.
Death for him, as an African, a believer in God (not the god of churches, but of the Bible)
and a zen-infused samurai was only the falling of a cherry blossom or a feather.
Talking about death, he said:
"People who were close to me and have died, come closer.
I feel they're near, all the time.
It is this clear and urgent feeling of nearness which I find so convincing.
I do not think they could speak to me
because I could not possibly understand the language of reality beyond death,
they can only communicate this nearness,
and I cherish it."
I remember our final meeting.
As usual, there was the fragrance of the bouquet of freesias in his study,
as well as the friendly beckoning of the mantis - the Bushman god –
and then our farewell, hands in hands,
and the blue-eyed stare which meant, as usual again, "au-revoir".
Then I closed the door on him and his "space ship" - as I used to call his flat in Chelsea.
I was not aware then that he was going to pursue,
all by himself, his never-ending travel and quest.
Indeed, Laurens van der Post always recommended
that we should never cease to obey and follow the pattern
set by the great myths
such as Odysseus or the quest for the Holy Grail
if we were to ensure our survival.
In this painful search for greater meaning we,
like the vanishing Bedouins, Bushmen or Tibetans,
must find a new home in this Wasteland we so cleverly created.
Laurens van der Post not only told stories, wonderful stories of all kinds,
but he has "grown" stories which nourish and help to heal and dream.
Patiently, courageously, because he knew the needs,
rhythms and seasons of the earth as well as of humans,
the author planted seeds into our wasteland and our parched souls
while giving us a few hints in order to help us to do
our little human business a little better.
Again and again he invited us to dare to make the very first little step
of the great journey under the guidance of, let's say, an elephant,
a baboon, a rhinoceros, a whale, a mantis, the Bushman,
or simply by following a dream of something
we otherwise tended to forget or neglect.
All his family members and friends have one certainty at heart - that Sir Laurens,
before going back to light, and, like the hunter in the Bushman story,
grasped, at last,
one feather of the
Great White Bird of Truth
in his outworn fingers.

It was to this man that Lady Thatcher turned for advice on Nelson Mandela and Chief Buthelezi,
and it was to this man that Prince Charles looked for spiritual guidance.
It is true that he had great personal qualities and some good intentions.
But his understanding of Africa was superficial and his advice - so freely given - was wrong,
patronising and dangerous.
God knows what Lady Thatcher and Prince Charles will be thinking
when they read this long, thoroughly researched, and devastating demolition job.

FIRST for me to EVER see the above “take” re: Laurens van der Post as Master Deceiver.
And yet, even if this is all “true”…it does NOT take away from the absolute GLORY of his writing/stories!
