The Joy Behind Suffering and Death

These difficult days remind me of an earlier time,
when I spoke to Bernadette (Roberts)
about some difficult physical suffering I was going through.

She said she hoped and prayed
that I was not also suffering interiorly
but were aware that God is with me
and has ordained this suffering
to prepare me for a whole new life.

It is because God (eternal life with God) is not of this world
that your being in this world has to go by the wayside
in order to enter into God’s being –
which is not in this world.

She went on to say that death and dying
are not about anything else.
Although dying is a positive transformative process,
it is thought of as a ‘negative’
because it means leaving life as one knows it now,
for a life that one does not know now.

Man’s eternal life is of an entirely different nature
than his present life.
No one knows eternal life until it is a fait accompli.

Because one does not know ahead of time,
soul preparation must be perfect trust in God.

The reason this is not easy is because
it means giving up not only what one knows,
but knowing itself.

Everything one thinks is ‘life after death’
can be thrown in the wastebasket.
In the garden, Jesus had to sweat out this unknowing,
“to be or not to be”
– how it would go after his death.

How it really goes
is nothing like man’s ideas of ‘eternal life’.

Jesus said
“Thy will be done”,
meaning
‘however it goes, so be it!’

This is the last word on eternal life.
Bernadette encouraged me to maintain ‘tough love’ for God –
“that your trust may be perfect!”

Keep in mind,
it is indicative of Christian mysticism
that before we come to the unitive state
we must be absolutely grounded,
and for the rest of our lives,
in the knowledge of our own nothingness,
helplessness, weakness
and
even sinfulness.

This is the toughest part.
The idea of getting to the unitive state
without this is just wishful thinking,
a total error.

When we really get to the bottom of our own nothingness
we discover the truth of St. Paul’s saying,
“In my weakness is my strength”
(Faith, which is God),
and also,
“I will glory in my infirmities”,
because God sustains even our nothingness.

Thus where our nothingness comes to an end
we finally meet God,
only this time we meet God on His Ground,
not on our ground.

Self is an Obstacle to Clear Vision

In the now-moment the self never arises;
nothing calls upon it to do so.
The eye seeing itself lives and holds everything
tightly in this moment,
a moment that has no need of a self.

But even if we persist with the notion of self,
such a label adds nothing to pure subjectivity.

A Deeper Intelligence - Amoda Maa

There's an intelligence that's deeper than thought
and more intimate than concept.

There's an intelligence that weaves together
the substance of your body,
the tapestry of your life,
and the majesty of your light.

It's the same intelligence that

It occurred to me…
There was a time when my Soul Shone, unobscured,
By all that would accrue upon my Naked Innocence,
When the Ecstasy of Being was unalloyed by selfhood,
And I existed as my Essence.

There was a time, before I learned a language,
Before the inner voice began its endless dialog,
Before I came to feel my self as the thinker,
When I was simply Perception.

There was a time before all that is experienced,
Was wrapped in words, concepts, and images,
Overlaying every perception with the already known,
A time when I was simply Immediacy.

There was a time, before the felt sense of my self,
Qualified and conditioned in countless ways,
Came to feel dense, isolated, and alone,
A time when I was simply Experience.

There was a time, before boy-girl; fat-thin, gifted-dim;
Smart-dull; attractive-unattractive; admired-disdained,
A time before qualifications and attributions,
When I simply Was.

And I wondered if, before these Veils enshrouded me,
The Ecstasy of Being I sought so desperately,
Might simply be the Nature of what I Am, Before.

And so I Journeyed within, back, behind, before,
All that had accrued “upon” my naked Innocence,

The principle of life and the principle of death
constantly manifest themselves
throughout all of nature and,
consequently, in human beings too.

As soon as a foetus is formed

But... I don’t want to close my eyes,
I told The Beautiful One, The Merciful,
And make that Journey so deep within,
To Heaven, at the Heart of Being.

Was to find You, and Die in Your arms.
And I did find You… and I did Die There,
In the Ecstasy of nonexistent Existence.

But... when Creation appeared once again,
And I a part of it, I found You... Here,
A Divine Stowaway, inhabiting my Heart,

Why, now, would I close these sated eyes,

Don’t Start with Love
– Osho

Start from anywhere.
You are a perfect circle, and so deeply interconnected,
with everything in your life.

You can start by being more meditative,
which is the simplest because it does not involve other human beings.
The others are a little complex;
it is better to let them come on their own.

My own understanding is, don’t start with love,
because your understanding of love is not the authentic love.
It is simply biological infatuation,
and if you start with that you have gone astray.

Start with meditation
because meditation is the only thing
that biology has not given to you.
It has a tremendous force of its own.
That’s why the physiologist or the biologist will account for everything
but will never mention the word ‘meditation’.

Meditation is the only bridge between you and the beyond.
Start with meditation – and that’s what is happening to you, effortlessly.
Sitting with me, listening to me,
a silence enters into your heart and suddenly
you feel springs of love unaddressed,
radiating in all directions.

It is not love to someone,
it is simply being loving.

But if it comes from meditation, from silence, it will have purity,
because it is not coming from biology.
It is not coming from your past,
it is not coming from all your conditionings;
it is coming from the
spontaneous experience of silence.

And suddenly you see
a great aroma of love around you.

as we watch the morning sun rise and concentrate upon it,
is to establish contact with our higher self.
And here is a method that will help you.

As you gaze at the rising sun,
imagine that you are already up there, in it,

you still feel very small, very limited;
but from the moment that you are
also up above in the sun,
you build a bridge between yourself

"HERE" and "THERE"

There is a... a Space, Within,
A Place at the Very Heart of my Being,
Where Nothing exists, but Existence.

Not a space, of course, or a place, really,
But although unseen, ungraspable, "There",
It is Palpable, Visceral, Experienced "Here".

The Kingdom of Heaven, our Inner Sanctum,
"There", yet closer than the jugular, "Here",
The Essence we Are, before "we" are...

The "Am" before "I Am".

I will not speak for you, or others,
And become, thus, yet another theologian,
Preaching the "Truth" of all things.

But perhaps you have tasted this Wine,
Even if only as the Softest Ambience,
That Imbues, Surrounds, Enfolds in Love?

I am not in accordance with those,
who pronounce this Essence transcendent,
Beyond all qualities and attributes.

For when "I" Died, yet Remained,
An Attribute like non other was Revealed,
"There", at the End of all things...

Where Beginning and End do not exist.

A Rapture, an Ecstasy, beyond expression,
Beyond all dualities, without opposite,
"There", in the Heaven of Nonexistent Existence...

Where Heaven and Hell do not exist.

And a touch of that Ecstasy followed me "Here",
When "I" and Creation returned from "There",
So that "I" was never quite "myself" again...

Where self in form and formless Soul coexist.

Existing "Here" as myself, but... not,
Moving in space and time, but... not,
Being both "Here" and "There"...

Where Space, Time do not exist.

Wounded and broken in my Humanity
But accompanied, through that Imperfection
By that Rapturous Perfection, Shining...

Where Perfect and Imperfect do not exist.

SILENCE, STILLNESS, PEACE

My home is very near a busy road,
But Sitting in its lush garden,
The din and clamor, so close by,
While deemed by some, disruptive,
Is to me a Reminder that Silence,
Has naught to do with sound.

For hearing the myriad notes of Life,
Whether melodious or dissonant,
Within, my Soul’s attention is elsewhere,
Intoxicated at The Tavern of The Beloved,
Where Enraptured, it cups its ears and asks,
“Hmm, did you say something?”

My mind moves in continuous thought,
But Resting within myself,
The flow of words and images,
While deemed by some, a distraction,
Is to me a Reminder that Stillness,
Has naught to do with movement.

For as thoughts and images flow,
Whether pleasurable or discordant,
Within, my Soul’s attention is elsewhere,
Entranced by the Face of The Beloved,
Where, without turning from Her,
It gestures, “You go on ahead.”

The psyche’s weather roils, ever changing,
But Abiding as the formless Sky,
The inconstancy of calm and catastrophe,
While deemed by some, a hindrance,
Is to me a Reminder that Peace,
Has naught to do with change.

For whether the vicissitudes of emotion,
Bring sunlit joy or darkening sorrow,
Within, my Soul’s attention is elsewhere,
Lost in Reverie of The Changeless One,
Ever Radiant in the Heart of Being,
Timeless, Spaceless, Objectless.

Abandoning silence and clamor,
We become Silence.
Abandoning stillness and motion,
We become Stillness.
Abandoning peace and unrest,

IN THE GARDEN OF TIME

“What have I done wrong?”
The ripening fruit bemoaned,
While, burgeoning with nectar,
And rich with the colors of fruition,
A little green remained near the stem.

“Surely, this is my fault!”
The tender bud lamented,
When, upon first opening to sunlight,
The promise of flowering revealed,
Its delicate petals remained yet veiled.

Some of our deepest wounds,
Are judgements, self-inflicted,
Endless paper cuts upon our spirit,
Made by an inherently imperfect “self”,
Despising its imperfection.

When in fact, the green-stemmed fruit,
The infant petals in a sheltering bud,
Are as they should be, in their time,
On schedule to arrive, in their time,
In this Dream of passing seasons.

For here, in The Garden of Time,
What is not yet, becomes what is,
And what is, becomes what was,
And our manifest Being, ever ripening,
Is not yet, now, as it will be, then.

On this Path of Love and Surrender,
Tend gently the seedling of your Heart,
Doing the needful, as you are able,
Then Surrender, giving yourself over,
Sweet unripened...

THE TATTERED RUG
I have tender affection,
For rugs with tattered edges,
For I was before, and now remain,
Tattered and torn at the edges,
Even as The Beautiful One,
Inhabits the Heart of my Being.

For Her Radiant Presence,
Has not perfected the whole,
Every aspect of the manifest form,
In a single, Mystical Transmutation,
But weaves Grace, thread by thread,
Stitch by stitch, through warp and woof.

Her Transmuting Alchemy, interwoven,
The Shimmering Filament of Love,
Entwined in the Ultimate of Intimacies,
Into the tattered and soiled fabric,
The inherently imperfect cloth,
Of the manifest Being.

And so, I seek out the tattered rugs,
Deemed unfit for purchase,
By the jurists of religion,
For I, too, have tattered edges,
Which, though appearing as flaws,
Are proof of Love, Unconditional.

Chuck Surface - What is it like?
There are many transient experiences,
“States” experienced along The Way,
Which, although coming and going,
Become, in passing, a part of our totality.

Like a sudden rain of Benediction,
Showering Grace upon our wilted spirit,
Such are these transient states,
Refreshing, renewing, inspiring.

Some rue their ephemeral nature,
And in their passing, deem them “gone”,
But their Waters only appear to have dried,
Having sunken more deeply into our Roots.

There are “stations”, as well, along the Way,
Enduring Transmutations of our Being,
No longer coming and going,
Having become inherent in our experience.

Like the Sudden cracking of a green bud,
Revealing pedals formerly hidden,
Never again a seed, never again a bud,
An event in time, as the Timeless Blossoms.

I smile at the implication of finality,
In words like enlightenment and awakening,
For no matter the profundity of one's station,
“Enlightening”, as I see it, is an endless affair.

Into the Ecstasy of Dissolution.

Radiant, as well, in the Heart of Being,
Is Fathomless Gratitude and Appreciation,
For the Experience of manifest existence,
For the Kingdom of Heaven is Within.

However futile it may seem to reason,
You cannot help but Pray,
For the end of all suffering,
Everywhere, Now, and forever.

You Feel Affection for all that appears,
In the Dream of manifest existence,
A Tender Hearted but Fierce Desire,
For the Happiness, the Rightness, of All That Is.

Into the lifeboat of the Poet, the Lover.

You have become as a Mad Dervish,
Wandering the Wilderness of The Unknown,
Cherishing Experience above ideology,
Dancing, where dancing is prohibited.

Your Life is a Play of Mystical Delight,
In which the Player upon the stage,
Is ever Enfolded in the Love,
Of The Director's Gaze.

You are a Wave no longer separate,
Dancing upon, and as, the Ocean of Bliss,

THE BEAUTIFUL ROOMMATE
How could I ever forget the day I discovered,
The Beloved had returned with me from Heaven,
And against all that the jurists declare,
Had taken up Residence in my Heart.

Since that day, when Grace was made manifest,
It has not been easy for all who inhabit this House,
Most tragically for our roommate, the mind,
For She refuses to speak in his language.

“This is not helpful!” he turned to me, frustrated.

In spite of relentless, desperate enquiries,
She will not reveal to the poor fellow,
In any way comprehensible to intellect,
The Who, What, When, Where, Why of Herself.

“This is not helpful!” he turned to me, overwrought.

And he is not alone in the discord She sows,
For without asking, She has gone through me,
Tossing traditions long reverenced, held dear,
Breaking “beliefs” into tiny pieces, unrecognizable...
Leaving the mess for me to clean up.

When I asked if She might stop for awhile,
Or help, at the least, in cleaning the mess,
The Astounding Confusion left in Her Wake,
She Kissed my Heart, and I Fainted in Ecstasy.

“This is not helpful,” the mind bemoaned.

For reasons that remain a Mystery,
She left a piece of Faith intact upon the mantle,
But when I asked what this Faith could be for,
She Kissed my Heart, and I Fainted in Ecstasy.

“She will not help.” the mind sighed.

When the Light of Her Presence became too great,
I tried to ignore Her, locking myself in my Room,
But found Her there, within myself, as my very Soul,
And overwhelmed by Her Beauty, Fainted in Ecstasy.

“I have no need of help,” I whispered, then Vanished.

Had I foreseen what would befall this House,
How in handing The Beloved the Key to my Heart,
She would Destroy these walls, and all within,
Leaving this Illumined Ruin…

I would have Fainted in Ecstasy.

A person who has just started learning to swim,

will find it difficult to accept that it is possible to float effortlessly.

It uses names… “Beloved”, “Beautiful One”, “My Own”,
Knowing full well that these expressions of Love are...
So many Veils.

And when the mind seeks in vain to describe the Unknowable,
It uses metaphors… “Friend”, “Teacher”, “Guide”,
Knowing full well that these expressions of Wisdom are...
So many Veils.

What is it that is Veiled by names, however Beautiful,
Veiled by descriptions in metaphor, however Humbled and Wise,
Veiled by all that appears, and... by we to whom all appears?

Is to close my eyes and journey within,

And this Vehicle of Perception, and all Perceived...

It is the play of desire and fear,
That drives our weary Hearts Within;
Exhaustion, born of those dualities,
Endlessly pulling at our Soul.

Desire and fear, desire and fear,
Sailing desperately toward the one,
Struggling against the current of the other,
Losing strength with each breaking wave.

Perhaps you have heard the myths,
Of a Peace, imperturbable, impenetrable,

You've heard, salt doll,
Of the Ocean of Pure Being,
Of Heaven,
And you begin walking,
From the Desert of duality,
In the direction your Friend has pointed

As you draw nearer,
Even before seeing It,
You begin to feel Moisture in the air.
And it is so… very… Intoxicating,
Especially to one so... very... parched,
From a life lived as a “person”,
As... “someone”.

If you stop walking now,
You will continue to enjoy the fleeting mist,
Ebbing and flowing, as mists do,
But will remain a person, an enjoyer.

And, suffering that pain of separation,
Will grasp desperately to hold,
What cannot be held;
The Fragrant mist,
Sweet with the taste of your Heart's Desire.
And will live out your life still thirsting.

Keep walking, Dear Heart.

In time, you will come to the shore,
And standing there, become so Saturated,
With the Mist of Heaven,
That Sublimity drips from your hair.

But even there, drenched in Beauty.
“You” will remain,
And suffering, will grasp, white-knuckled,
To fill the Hole in your Heart.

Keep walking, Dear Heart.

The Mist you feel is "of" the Ocean,
Wetness to that Water,
But should not be mistaken,
For Immersion in The Depths.

However Sublime "your" experience,
It will never satisfy "you",
Will never dissolve "you",
Will never quench the Ancient Longing
As long as “you” remain.

Keep walking, Dear Heart.

Until the ideas you hold of The Beloved,
Until all concepts, theories, and imaginings,
Sink into the Depths beyond all dualities.

Breathing in Fullness, Completion, and Bliss,

DROOLING MIND

It's most upsetting.
My roommate, the mind, was quite happy.
All was understood,
And could be explained
With such diamond-like clarity,
To anyone who asked.

Oh… and how he loved reading,
Learning more, and more,
Gaining greater and greater “knowledge”,
Deeper and deeper “understanding”,
Articulating ever more clearly,
Respected and admired.

And then… She came,
Plying him with The Wine,
Of Dissolution and Bliss.
And I watched, helplessly,
As my friend became a Fool.

Neglecting everything…
Dreamy-eyed...
For Her.

I actually found him one day,
Intoxicated,
Head on the curb,
Drooling concepts, theories, and conjecture.
Just pathetic.

As I gathered him up,
To hide his shame from passers by,
He could only mutter, “my Love”, “my Own”.
Until he swooned, again… lost.
And Everything poured out of him, instead of in.
He'll never live this down.

He still lives with me,
But we seldom talk anymore.
He wants only to speak of Her,
But the mindless fool...

Above: This is the very old bag we carry for the precious shells we find on beach. In my excitement with the photo shoot via some tourists who stopped by...i LOST that precious bag....didn't realize until an hour later when on far south end of beach. The ocean wind so strong, was sure it had blow away forever...but the wind had actually blown enough sand on it to keep it exactly where it was dropped. Was SO HAPPY to find it.

Below: .....and this is the tide that was rising and very close to washing away the bag forever.
