The Sandōkai
The Mind of the Great Sage of India
Flowed unseen from west to east.
And kept true to the source -- a clear stream unsullied.
By variables of wit and dullness:
The true way has no patriarch of south or north.

Born, we clutch at things
And later compound our delusion by following ideals.
Each sense gate and its object:
Dependence and nondependence --
Entering together into mutual relations
And yet standing apart in their own uniqueness.

Component things differing deeply in form and feel,
The voices -- soft and harsh in inherent isolation.
High and middle are words matching the darkness,
And light separates the murky phrase from the pure.

The characteristics of the four elements draw together
Like a child returning to its mother.

The heat of fire, the moving wind,
The water, wet, and the solid earth;
Eyes to see, sounds to hear, and smells --
The sour and salty taste on the tongue.

But in each related thing,
As leaves grow from roots,
End and beginning return to the source.

"High" and "low" are used respectively:
Within light there is darkness,
But you cannot explain it by one-sided darkness alone;
Within darkness there is light,
But you cannot understand it only by one-sided light.

Light and darkness go with each other
Like the sequence of steps in walking.

All things have inherent potentiality:
Both function and rest reside within.

With the actual comes the ideal
Like a box and its lid;
With the ideal comes the actual
Like two arrows meeting in mid-air.

Understand the basic truth from these words
And do not set up your own standards.

In sense experience,
if you do not know the basic truth,
How can you find the right path
no matter how much you walk?

As you walk further
the distinction between near and far disappears,
And if you become lost,
obstructing mountains and rivers arise.

This I offer to the seekers of truth:
Waste no time.

I have felt like Alice, tumbling down the well

Why not?
Well, it seems the chameleon instinctively knows
that all things come in their own good time.

Chameleons are known for going long periods without food. Their slower pace allows them to conserve energy.
In essence, this quaint creature understands
that the next opportunity is coming - so why rush?

This is a huge symbolic lesson for us modern-day humans. The chameleon reminds us that Nature provides.
It reminds us to stop pushing and rushing to grab and get. Rather, be connected,
stay tuned with the rhythms of Nature
- our opportunity will come -
if only we are patient and confident
our reward will come to us
in that perfect moment of calm expectancy.

The expression ‘odour of sanctity’, which you hear sometimes, does mean something. There are saints, spiritual Masters, who have worked so much on themselves that their psychic bodies emanate real fragrance.

These fragrances are picked up by beings of light in the invisible world, who then rush to breathe them in. In certain cases, it can even happen that particularly sensitive people may sense these fragrances emanating from their soul.

These fragrances also emanate from the soul of those beings who have learned to accept and overcome their suffering. So often, you hear people complaining or shouting in an outraged manner at the slightest disappointment, trouble or injustice!

The suffering they feel is like a burning fire.
But those who consciously accept and remain silent, knowing that through patience and love they are purifying matter in their inner being – those people are also preparing fragrances in their soul.

This is why knowing how to suffer is one of the greatest kinds of knowledge there is, one of the highest manifestations of love.

When an instrument is properly tuned
you need not play music on it;
just by striking it you will feel a great magnetism coming from it.

If an instrument well-tuned can have that magnetism,
how much greater should be
the magnetism of hearts that are tuned.

Silence is all about coming home to ourselves...
We look within and drop our opinionated mind
and learn to feel everything around us more deeply.

When the incessant chatter of the mind stops and
we let the quietness around submerge us, something
sacred is born within.

It is only in silence that we are capable of listening.
We learn to listen more when we are silent.

Silence is the basic ingredient allowing us to
enter our intuitive mind, and resist the
cacophony of meaningless noises outside.

It is interesting to note how Silent and Listen
have the same letters but are arranged differently.

We have forgotten the art of waiting and allowing
ourselves to grow silent within.

Nature thrives on silence.
We never hear the footsteps of the moon when it
appears in the sky. We don't hear a loud bang when
the sun comes out and the stars burst open in the sky.

Their arrival is always wrapped in glorious silence.

Look how the tree knows it!
It remains bare, beautiful and still;
waiting for the new leaves, knowing
that the old has gone and the new will soon be coming.
The tree waits in silence.

Just like the tree, when we are silent and waiting,
something beautiful inside us keeps on growing
and it is stillness and silence that gives birth to creativity.

Often it happens that when we wait in silence, life
rushes back to fill those crevices in our souls. There
are times when silence becomes the most potent way
of communication and is more effective than words.
To say nothing is often more difficult than expressing
anger, love and betrayal with words.

Being silent with a natural and calm stillness within
is like a spiritual reflex. There is a space between
stimulus and response. And in that space is our
power to choose our response.
That "space" is silence...

Each time I feel that I just cannot take another step
forward in life, I seek refuge in silence...

THE INFLUENCE OF REAL LOVE

The Heart is another name for the SELF … the ONE, as is Love.
Love is perhaps more misunderstood than any expression of Truth,
whether one is totally immersed in the dream world,
which is totally laden with conditioning
no matter how often ‘unconditional Love is spoken about …
or involved in so called spirituality
where one is focused on returning to
the Awareness of Who they Really Are.

As long as there is a sense of ‘individuality’ …
conditioning exists and will color all expressions of Love.

The ‘Voice’ of Love speaks softly
and always brings with IT the feeling of absolute Freedom
where nothing constrains or controls.
Peace is another name for the SELF or Love,
and the sense that you ‘are’ Peace
accompanies Love no matter what external ‘noise’ you may be exposed to.

There is a feeling that everything is Beautiful in the presence of genuine Love
no matter what you are experiencing.
This makes no sense to the false self,
which has a wide range of judgments on a sliding scale
and in this way it always ‘misses’ the Beauty underlying everything.

When one is experiencing Real Love they feel completely Abundant,
even if they are living on the street.
Abundance is also a word for Who you Really Are
and Real Love opens your Awareness to this Truth.

So called ‘healing’ can also occur spontaneously in the presence of Real Love.
The Real YOU has never been sick
except through the illusion of the body-mind-identity.

Real Love can lift you out of that illusion momentarily
and bring about an instant influence on the manifested conditioning called illness.

Real Love can bring you vignettes of the God you Are.
Some call this an AHA, an epiphany or a satori.
Welcome and embrace these moments
whenever they ‘touch’ you …

they are the ‘crumb-trail’ HOME.

A Rapture, an Ecstasy, beyond expression,

“There”, in the Heaven of Nonexistent Existence…
Where Heaven and Hell do not exist.

And a touch of that Ecstasy followed me “Here”,
When “I” and Creation returned from “There”,
So that “I” was never quite “myself” again...
Where self in form and formless Soul coexist.

Existing “Here” as myself, but… not,
Moving in space and time, but… not,
Being both “Here” and “There”…
Where Space, Time do not exist.

Wounded and broken in my Humanity,
But accompanied, through that Imperfection,
By that Rapturous Perfection, Shining…

Truth is everywhere.
Only the false self gives Truth a ‘location’, which is ever present.
The advent of mass communication
is a mirror for ONE-ness hidden in plain sight.

Despite being tainted
by the collective conditioning of humanity,
it makes available ‘the voice of silence’
in a non-intrusive manner
that the body-mind-identity
does not innately and instantly resist.

Each one’s unique world is precisely sculpted
from their own conditioning
reflecting who they are NOT,
while alluding to Who They Really Are.

The entertainment industry has for decades
dropped ‘hints’ about Truth
[whether it was aware of doing it or not].
“The Force be with you”
is perhaps one of the most recognized quotes
of the last century.
Fairy tales abound with metaphors
about the dream the world is
and action-comics
[which now dominate theater blockbusters]
foster the concept of the God within.

The nudge of Truth
comes through any available
‘chink in the armor’ of resistance to tug-at-the-sleeve
of the deep sleeping God-SELF
and stimulates the natural Divine Discontent
inbred into every walking god
who still slumbers in the grand dream.

Suffering is the primary means
of bringing the stubborn sleeper
to the alter of Truth
but ‘hints’ are everywhere and incessant....

...as the ONE Awareness
shakes IT SELF like a rag-doll
until Freedom receives
the focused Attention
that will clear
the ancient clouds of conditioning

Chapter 6 – SELF-RELIANCE

If approached by Truth,
the sneer of the altered Ego is only too familiar,
because it perceives Truth as the threat,
and not itself.

Such a Self tends to give way to lowly doubt,
by asking True Perception:
‘How do you know?
Where do you know it from?’

It would be the same as walking in the rain and being wet,
the question being asked:
‘How come you know you are wet?’
We know we are wet because we are wet,
it is as simple as that.
The soul issuing forth Truth knows because it is Truth.

If we only cared to slow down,
lift our eyes but for a moment from our daily busy-ness
or find stillness in the silent thunder of a sunrise
and dared to look within,
we would find something so precious
against which all things pale into nothingness.

If we braved ourselves to look where we constantly look from,
we would discover that we are really much wiser than we think.

If two or three gather to communicate and thoughts
should ascend from the personal to the impersonal,
that is from the material to the things of the Spirit,
then greatness is born.

Then the I AM gushes forth its truth and we are surprised
at the wealth of knowing we carry in the depths of our heart.
Then the intellect is by-passed,
and communication occurs along the golden thread
which runs through all men
– simpleton and genius alike –
and that is the heart.

It is here and not in intellect where virtue resides.
It is here where Spirit dwells,
and Spirit is wild and free,
it cannot be tamed by creeds, dogmas and concepts,
it cannot feed on dollars
or the things dollars can buy,
but on greater thought
which lifts the Soul above
the petty bickerings
of the marketplace.

If men communicate thus,
they become conscious of their unity,
then it matters not who utters words of Truth,
for they know it is the property of all,
it is the nectar of the Soul.

It is eternal,
and Man’s treasured progress
becomes as fugitive dust
in the light of the Soul.

This is true sustenance,
and lifts a man beyond his private Self,
transmutes him into the knowing of his essence,
his God-SELF,
thus each of such men shall part
a greater man than when he came.

eyes were gazing at grass when suddenly a shadow darted right in front on my feet...
.....first Sense was of a butterfly...
...then INSTANTLY Knew it must be the "pet" hummingbird....

i looked up from grass to the aloe plant this bird takes to....
...and the bird was flying directly towards and very close to my face...
... back from the plant at my eye level....

Whenever you acknowledge that you are NOT Free
and that you must ‘do’ something to become Free
[to find out Who You Really Are],
you place Freedom out in the future
where it does NOT exist.

Virtually all spiritual ‘paths’ … in some way,
are trapped in this ‘endless loop’
of ‘doing to get somewhere’.
Just the word ‘path’
suggests a journey
in space and time [separation].

Nevertheless,
the Attention on becoming Free
does have ‘some’ value in that it recognizes
that although you may believe
you are Now and have always been Free,
you are NOT experiencing Life in that way.

Life is always ‘whole’, always ‘complete’ – Now,
but if you are NOT experiencing this Truth,
Life always ‘feels’ limited
and
YOU ‘as’ YOU are NOT limited.

If you say: “I am Free” like an affirmation or a mantra …
this too suggests the ‘possession’ of something
and what can be possessed can be taken away.

You ‘are’ Freedom IT SELF,
which is another way of saying
you are Love IT SELF or Joy IT SELF …
or simply the SELF without any description,
empty, nothing
yet having infinite potential
to manifest as
ALL THAT IS.

Attention on the SELF
[I AM THAT I AM]
as your ONE and only Reality
allows you to more easily see
whatever is ‘unlike’ the SELF,
‘exposed’ as who you are NOT.

Anything … which has a beginning and an ending
‘is’ NOT Who You Are …
it is unreal, and this represents
virtually everything you experience in your world
including your body-mind-identity.

The more the false self is ‘exposed’
the more it sinks back
into the SELF,
which more and more becomes
your ‘every’ experience.

If God is omnipresence, we must be the very presence of God. That must mean that there is no other presence, and even we, then, have no presence. Why? Because God fills all space, and that does not leave any room for us, except in the degree that we are a part of that Omnipresence. This wipes out that false selfhood, that ego-selfhood, and leaves only the divine Selfhood which we are.

To come into contact with The One Who Is Not Busy,
we soften the specific focus that we usually bring
to our daily concerns and start paying attention
not just to what furthers our goals
but to everything inside us and around us.

Our perspective on life radically changes
when we have no concerns but being aware.

We get a chance to see how information comes in
through our senses and evokes thoughts and feelings.
Our daily preoccupations drop away,
and we come to know what basic awareness is like,
before we put layers and layers of concerns on top of it.

If we pay close attention,
we can see quite clearly the process
by which we pile on those layers of concerns.

In other words,
when we are consciously aware of our bodies
and the whole sensual environment around us,
we create for ourselves an opportunity
to notice what's usually overwhelmed
by our daily preoccupations.

This is encountering
The One Who Is Not Busy.

One of the most fundamental things to be always remembered
is that we are living in a hypocrite society….
The people who are in power – politically, religiously, socially – are in power because civilization has not happened.

A civilized world, a mature man, needs no nations
– all those boundaries are false –
needs no religions,
because all those theologies are simple fictions.

The people who have been for thousands of years in power –
the priests, the politicians, the super-rich,
they have all the powers to prevent human evolution.

But the best way to prevent it is to convince man,
‘You are already civilized’,
to convince man,
‘You are already a human being.
You need not go through a transformation,
it is unnecessary....

Truth makes you utterly naked –
naked of all lies, naked of all hypocrisies.
That's why nobody wants truth;
everybody believes that he has got it....

And when thousands of people around you
– your parents, your teachers, your priests, your leaders –
are all believing it,
it seems almost impossible
for new arrivals in the world, small children,
not to be convinced of this thousands-of-years-old idea....

So the first thing I want you to understand is that we are still barbarous.
Only barbarians can do things
that we have been doing for thousands of years
– not human beings....

Politicians are very, very cunning.
They don't want to be controversial,
so they say only things which you like or everybody is going to like.
They are not concerned with the actual situation,
and the changes it needs.
Their whole effort is in how to make you happy
just by giving you bogus words.

Nowhere in the world
are any of the basic rights being applied.

Neutral does not express opinions.
It does not resist, complain,
react or judge.
It ‘observes’.

If you are driving a stick shift automobile
in either forward or backward,
and then shift into ‘neutral’
the car will continue moving for a while
due to the already existing momentum.
This is true of your life experiences as well.

In the neutral position of non-reaction … of observation,
you will still experience some of the momentum
of a given situation,
but you will NOT be adding to it.

The Dog Innately Knows "NEUTRAL" he was VERY STILL....watching me as i returned from sunrise beach...

In spiritual terms
you will not be creating more karma
with which to express the same ‘type’
of experience again.

This is saying YES to ‘What IS’.
This means that the ‘conditioning’
that defines the false-self-identity
[attachments, expectations and identifications]
is NOT being ‘Expanded’
… it is being witnessed or observed
as something which is
NOT who you are.

The false self will complain
that this is boring or not living
because it requires constant ‘involvment in activity’
in order to ‘feel’ alive despite its roller coast ride
between happiness and sorrow.

The addiction to this constant ‘ride’
must burn out before ‘Neutral’
becomes ‘consistently’ appealing, ...

.....but there is no need to force it
your Freedom is inevitable
because that ‘is’
Who You Really Are.

This is how your dream world
constantly comes into being ‘as’ your reality.

Without your attention … on anything,
there ‘is’ no world – no dream.
What then is left, what remains?

Emptiness or Nothing-ness
is the Natural state in which Truth resides …
it ‘is’ Truth IT SELF …

This nothing-ness is without identity

YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE

There is nothing to ‘fix’ … not in your own life,
humanity’s or the world itself.
Nothing is out of order.

Can a dream be somehow wrong?
It comes in brilliant Light or shadowed darkness but remains ‘only’ a dream.
Your body, your mind, your life experience … is all a dream.
It is not wrong, and you are NOT wrong … you are simply dreaming.
No matter how you tweak your dream
[try to fix yourself and the world],
it is still just a dream.

When you have had every dream experience [several times],
as if you had watched every movie ever produced,
the allure will have faded and the mind
that projected each dream-experience will also have dissolved
along with the person you call you.

This point of saturation arises for everyone
[who are also aspects of the grand dream] …
‘YOU’ are the only ONE there is
despite enormous evidence to the contrary.

As these words are written,
it is YOU who writes them.
Even ‘surrender’ is NOT a choice
but an inevitable aspect of the dream
that tells you dream stories about ‘free will and control’.

You ‘are’ God or ONE or Pure Conscious Awareness – NOW
… the dream you dream cannot change that.

There ‘is’ no possibility of you being
somehow ‘left out’ of this eventual Awareness.

When you at last become fully Aware of this single Truth,
your sojourn within the dream will become softer,
gentler and you will begin to see
God ‘in’ and ‘as’ everything.

Resistance will dwindle to ‘What Is’
and the Moment of full Awakening to Who You Really Are
will ‘rush’ to greet you
with the Love that IT ‘is’.

In the Garden of The Beloved

SILENCE, STILLNESS, PEACE

My home is very near a busy road,
But Sitting in its lush garden,
The din and clamor, so close by,
While deemed by some, disruptive,
Is to me a Reminder that Silence,
Has naught to do with sound.

For hearing the myriad notes of Life,
Whether melodious or dissonant,
Within, my Soul’s attention is elsewhere,
Intoxicated at The Tavern of The Beloved,
Where Enraptured, it cups its ears and asks,
“Hmm, did you say something?”

My mind moves in continuous thought,
But Resting within myself,
The flow of words and images,
While deemed by some, a distraction,
Is to me a Reminder that Stillness,
Has naught to do with movement.

For as thoughts and images flow,
Whether pleasurable or discordant,
Within, my Soul’s attention is elsewhere,
Entranced by the Face of The Beloved,
Where, without turning from Her,
It gestures, “You go on ahead.”

The psyche’s weather roils, ever changing,
But Abiding as the formless Sky,
The inconstancy of calm and catastrophe,
While deemed by some, a hindrance,
Is to me a Reminder that Peace,
Has naught to do with change.

For whether the vicissitudes of emotion,
Bring sunlit joy or darkening sorrow,
Within, my Soul’s attention is elsewhere,
Lost in Reverie of The Changeless One,
Ever Radiant in the Heart of Being,
Timeless, Spaceless, Objectless.

Abandoning silence and clamor,
We become Silence.
Abandoning stillness and motion,
We become Stillness.
Abandoning peace and unrest,
We become Peace.

IN THE GARDEN OF TIME

“What have I done wrong?”
The ripening fruit bemoaned,
While, burgeoning with nectar,

In this Dream of passing seasons.

For here, in The Garden of Time,
What is not yet, becomes what is,
And what is, becomes what was,
And our manifest Being, ever ripening,
Is not yet, now, as it will be, then.

On this Path of Love and Surrender,
Tend gently the seedling of your Heart,
Doing the needful, as you are able,
Then Surrender, giving yourself over,
Sweet unripened...

Note Re: This Photo Shoot.....had a particularly "alone with the Alone" stroll during sunrise beach to the far south end...NO PEOPLE on beach that morning.....May 15, 2016.......when we turned around to walk north back to dunes path, we saw these Two Solitaries...in the distance....as we came closer, the man's eyes met mine
with a Quiet Smile of Soul Recognition...

The Silence of the Stars

When Laurens van der Post one night
